9. Rimini and Fellini

Rimini is a large cinema. Thus, he owes to the fantastic world created by Federico Fellini. The great director was born in this region in 1920. Hollywood recognized the merits of the master, awarding his films with five Oscars. Everything in the city reminds of the great director - Fellini Park, the Grand Hotel, dinners in restaurants with a Fellini menu. Even the train and station shown in Fellini's films are originally located in the town square Battisti (Italian piazza Battisti). There are also houses in which the Fellini family once lived. The first family nest was pointed out to admirers by the father of the great maestro - the house is located on the street Fumagalli (Italian via Fumagalli), they say, Fellini was born there.

10. Cuisine and typical dishes of Rimini

Arriving on vacation in Rimini, one cannot but try the delicious local flatbreads, the name of which in Italian sounds like music - piadina riminese. On city streets, such cakes are offered by dozens of fast food establishments, each with its own recipe for the contents: ham, and mozzarella cheese, and various aromatic herbs, and even tart chocolate as a filling.

Another "visiting card" of the local cuisine is the blue Adriatic fish (Italian: Рesce azzurro dell'Adriatico). Everything that the sea has to offer is used - red mullet, shrimp, mackerel, sprat ... Fish is grilled (focon), boiled in broth (arzdore), served with wine and vegetables, aromatic Italian herbs and olive oil with lemon. And finally, it is worth remembering about wines. The most popular in Rimini is the red Sangiovese (wino Sangiovese).

Now let's see what is interesting in the immediate area, and what excursions from Rimini are worth going during your stay at this seaside resort.

So, Rimini is bypassed up and down, on the beach, too, tired of lying. I want new experiences. On one side of us - the Adriatic Sea, on the other - alluring Italy.
City travel agencies usually offer excursions to Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan. However, near Rimini there are a sufficient number of small but charming towns where you can go yourself.

Transport

Transport links in Rimini are excellent, trains run along the entire coast. To the west, inland, you will have to get by bus or car, since the spurs of the Apennines already begin there, and the railways are laid bypassing the mountains.
If you have rented a car, then you are as free as the wind and you have many options.

By bus from Rimini

If you intend to use local buses, the first thing to do is to go to the Rimini train station and in the information window ask for the local bus schedule. You will be given a plump booklet in which you will find all the routes you are interested in and the necessary connections between flights.
The current bus schedules can also be viewed on the website (change the language to English - in the upper right corner).
The timetables on this site cover only the province of Rimini (ignoring the Republic of San Marino - an enclave lying in the center of the province).
The site has the ability to choose both a specific route and the city you need. In the second case, the site will give you a list of routes passing through this city.

You choose a route and receive a schedule.

On the same site you will also find city maps with sights and routes of public transport.
It is useful to know the meanings of some words in Italian: (for example, if you look at the timetable at a bus stop):

Pay attention to the special designations that are deciphered below. For instance:

The purchased ticket must be validated in one of the special punchers installed on the platforms. After that, you can ride this ticket for 4 hours from the start to the end station indicated on the ticket, and get off at intermediate stations (only on Regional trains without fixed seats).

West: San Marino, San Leo, Pennabilli, Montefiore Conca

So, let's start from the western direction, move towards the Apennines.

From Rimini to San Marino

The first option, lying on the surface, will be the original tiny republic, built on the top of Mount Titano. It seems that not a single vacationer in Rimini neglects the opportunity to visit there. Buses from the station run frequently, the ride takes half an hour, the ticket price is 5 euros one way.

San Marino will satisfy shoppers, museum lovers, and hikers on mountain trails, it will delight you with amazing views and the atmosphere of the holiday that reigns on its steep streets.

San Leo

Just north of Mount Titano there is another mountain - Feltro, and the town on it is called San Leo... Two saints, Marino and Leo, came to this land at the same time, each settling on his own hill.

Town San Leo not as popular as San Marino, but it usually lives up to the highest expectations.
It is more difficult to get to San Leo than to San Marino, you have to change trains in Pietracuta.
Bus number 160 runs from Rimini to Pietracuta (the last stop of this route is Novafeltria). Walks about once every two hours: 8-40, 10-40, etc. Drive to Pietracuta in 45 minutes. With the bus coming from Rimini to Pietracuta, a minibus is connected, which goes to San Leo.

There is also a direct bus (No. 165), but it rarely runs.
Check the current bus schedule on StartRomagna.it
What to see in San Leo? San Leo is a fortress on a steep cliff and a town under a fortress on a slope.
And here it is necessary to make a small digression and tell about the borgo.

What is borgo?

Borgo- these are small authentic towns (up to 20 thousand people) of historical value, retaining their medieval appearance and at the same time living their own life (usually through tourism and agriculture). In Italy, a record of such towns is kept, they are included in a special register, and it is not so easy to get into this register. So if locality awarded the status of "borgo", which means that it is worthy of a visit and you can safely go there, this is a kind of quality mark.
On the territory of Emilia-Romagna, as well as on the territory of the neighboring Marche, there is a sufficient amount of borgo.

Borgo in Emilia-Romagna

They are often located on the top of a hill or mountain - this was the nature of the area. At the junction of the flat coast with the foothills of the Apennines, numerous single hills are scattered, on each of which it was simply asking to build a fortified settlement.

San Marino (he is not a borgo, of course) is the most striking example of such a fortified city, and Mount Titano stands out strongly in the terrain. In its shadow and splendor, the rest of the fortress towns are somewhat lost, nevertheless they are cute, charming, keep the spirit of the times and are not too crowded with tourists.

Since two warring clans, Malatesta and Montefeltro, fought fiercely and stubbornly for influence in these regions in the Middle Ages (14-15 centuries), such a number of fortified settlements is understandable. Traveling through the cities of Emilia-Romagna, at every step you will stumble upon another citadel - the Malatesta fortress or Montefeltro. Rimini was the capital of the principality of Malatesta, Urbino was the capital of the duchy of Montefeltro.
With a car at your disposal, you can arrange a wonderful tour of the nearby borgo.
For example, after visiting San Leo, you can drive a little further east along the valley of the Marrechia River to the town Pennabilli, famous for its picturesque views, the ruins of two fortresses Penna and Billy (which gave the name to the city) and the fact that Tonino Guerra lived and was buried here. Pennabilli is filled with the "notions" of the kind wizard and dreamer Guerra, these are: Garden of Forgotten Fruits, Shelter of the Abandoned Mothers of God, Temple of Thoughts, Ceramic carpets and so on.

In the valley of the Marecchia River there are many fortresses and castles on the hills: Santarcangelo, Torriana, Montebello, Verruccio, San Leo, Talamello, Mayoletto, Sant'Agata, Pennabilli.

On the other side of Mount Titano is the Konka River. Borgo should be visited in the Konka Valley Montefiore Conca with a very spectacular fortress of the correct prismatic shape, which simply protrudes from the "body" of the city and dominates the area (considering that the city is built on the highest hill of the Konka valley).
For “deep” travelers, I recommend the book “Fortresses and Castles of the Province of Rimini from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance” - it will be especially useful for those who travel by car, as it maps out the routes through the province and describes the fortresses, castles and churches along the way.
What borgo are available for those who use by public transport? First of all, this is the same San Leo. This Gradara and San Giovanni in Marignano reachable from Cattolica is Brisighella near Faenza, but here we are already moving on to the next sections - travel along the coast using electric trains.

Southeast

Scheme

From Rimini to Gradara

Small town Gradara deserves the warmest praise and is a must-see, especially since it is very easy to get to it.
We reach the Cattolica station by train. Travel time - 15-20 minutes, cost - 2.15 euros

Cattolica is a seaside resort town next to Riccione.
Then you need to change to bus number 35, which goes to Gradara. The bus stop is a 7-minute walk from the station (ask local “autobus in Gradara”). Attention: prepare change for travel on local buses. The fare is paid on the bus, at the machine.
Set aside three hours for a walk.
From Cattolica, there is also a bus service to Borgo San Giovanni in Marignani.

From Rimini to Pesaro

The city next to Cattolica - Pesaro... It is located in the Marche region (however, like Gradara). And the bus route number 35, which took you from Cattolica to Gradara, connects Gradara and Pesaro (via Cattolica). Therefore, if you wish, you can drive from Gradara directly to Pesaro.

Pesaro can also be reached from Rimini by train. The train takes half an hour, the fare is 3-75 on the regional train and 8-50 on the Intercity.
The historic center is a 10-minute walk from the station. Read about the sights of Pesaro.

From Rimini to Urbino

To get into Urbino, you need to get from Rimini to Pesaro by train, and in Pesaro take a bus. The bus leaves from the railway station, it takes 45 minutes from Pesaro to Urbino.
Urbino- a marvelous town located on two hills. Speaking of him, they always mention that Raphael was born there. This is valuable, there is even an early work of him in the local museum. But above all, Urbino captivates with its landscapes and architecture. It was here that Count Federigo di Montefeltro decided to build his "ideal" city.

Following the southbound train along the coast, you will reach Ancona(for an hour fifteen in time and for 7-50 euros in money on a regional train). Still, the most valuable objects for study lie north of Rimini.

To the north

North of Rimini, the iron line is split. One goes along the seashore towards Ravenna, the other follows the famous Roman road Emilia, which the ancient Romans laid from Rimini to Piacenza.

Ravenna

Ravenna Is a must-see city! Its peculiarity is as follows. While acquaintance with most of the old Italian cities should begin with walking around the city: wandering the streets, looking into the courtyards, admiring the architecture, in Ravenna all the most valuable is hidden inside. These are early Christian mosaics of the 5-6th centuries. The single ticket includes several objects: the Arian Baptistery, the Baptistery of Neon, two churches of San Appolinaria (New in Ravenna and Old in the Class), and - the most impressive - the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the Basilica of San Vitale.

An easy way to get from Rimini to Ravenna is by taking the train. The train takes an hour, a one-way ticket costs 4-60.

The first mosaic object is located one station from Ravenna - in Class... This is the Basilica of Saint Appolinarius. In Klassa in ancient times there was a large seaport (later the sea moved 7 km away), now there is an archaeological zone on this place. Since the train ticket is valid for 4 hours, you can first get off in Klassa, go to the Basilica of Saint Appolinarius (the basilica is on the left side of the station) and, possibly, visit the archaeological zone, and then you will reach Ravenna.

Stations from Rimini to Ravenna

The historic center of Ravenna is to the left of the train station (if you are arriving from Rimini), walk 15 minutes.
After you have walked around all the objects with mosaics included in a single ticket, visit two iconic burials in Ravenna: the tomb of Dante at the Church of San Francesco and the mausoleum of Theodoric, the king of the Ostrogoths, during whose time the Ravenna mosaic splendor was created (his mausoleum is on the right from the station).

From Rimini to Ferrara

To get into Ferrara, usually you have to change trains either in Ravenna or Bologna. With an optimal connection, you can get to Ferrara in 2 hours 20 minutes and for 10 euros. There is also a direct train, which runs rarely and at inconvenient times.

Ferrara was the capital of the d'Este princes' possessions, refined and sophisticated. The magnificent Duomo, the ducal palace, the Estense castle, the Schifanoia villa with frescoes, the Romei villa, the art museum - there is a lot to see. You can combine an inspection of Ferrara with an inspection of Ravenna on the same day (but Ravenna - first of all, for fresh eyes).

North-west on the Via Emilia: Forlì, Faenza, Cesena, Bologna and beyond

It was now time to take the ancient road of Emilia, a road built by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. and connecting the cities of Ariminum (Rimini) and Placenza (Piacenza).
First station after Rimini - Santarcangelo di Romagna, with perfectly preserved historic center inside the 15th century fortress wall, with the Malatesta fortress on the top of the hill and a high tower.

Forli, Faenza, Cesena - the following stations. We saw them all in one day. From Rimini to Cesena, the train takes 18 minutes, from Cesena to Forlì - 12, from Forlì to Faenza - 10.

Ticket from Rimini to Faenza costs 5-80 euros. Since it is valid for 4 hours, it makes sense to take a ticket in Rimini to the farthest of these three stations - Faenza, on the way get off, for example, to Forlì, see it, then move to Faenza. On the way back - buy a ticket for 5-80 from Faenza to Rimini and see Cesena on the way.

The historic center of each is a 15-minute walk from the station.

The least valuable of them seemed to me Forli... However, the Duomo square with the tower is quite worthy of attention.
I amazed with its central square - very beautiful and spacious! An interesting museum of ceramics and faience. The highlight of Faenza is the details of houses decorated with painted tiles (the birthplace of faience, after all).

Cesena turned out to be cozy and sincere, with small, sudden squares scattered around the city, with the Duomo, located on one of such small squares, with a huge hill that suddenly appeared when entering a wide square, and the Malatesta fortress on the top of the hill (with palaces for women and men - inside the fortress). Yes, there are also funny sculptures in the back street. No, definitely good!

However, the most attractive object in this direction is.
the train runs 1-20, the journey costs about 10 euros (depending on the train).

Acquaintance with Bologna will take at least a day. The city is big and, I must say, magnificent. Just what is the Archimnasium of the University of Bologna or the Basilica of San Stefano - a conglomerate of seven ancient churches, numerous towers and palaces! In Bologna, you will personally see where the Moscow Kremlin came from, and the creator of the Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin, Aristotle Fiorovanti, is from Bologna.

Further cities in this direction: Modena, Reggio Emilia, Parma, Piacenza... Each of them is a win-win, each has something to see. But it is still far from Rimini to get to them. To the farthest of them - Piacenza (the one that ended the Emilieva road) - the regional train takes 3 hours, the fare is 18.60 euros. It is better to visit these cities by choosing the location of Bologna.

I would also like to draw your attention to the town, which lies a little to the side of the Emilia road, namely to the borgo Brisigella(Brisighella).

Get from Rimini to Brisigella it should be as follows: from Rimini by train we arrive in Faenza (40 minutes). We change to another train, pass one station and find ourselves in Brisigella. The whole journey takes about 1.15 and costs 6.40 euros. It is a charming town with an unusual street (the so-called Oslov Street) that runs inside the houses (such as a covered gallery). Three hills rise above the city, each of them is crowned with a structure (tower, castle, temple), and all the peaks are connected by a path.

It should be noted here that the train passing from Faenza past Brisigella follows to Florence.

So if you are planning a visit to Florence, you can take this route (via Faenza), which is cheaper than going to Florence via Bologna (as suggested by Trenitalia). True, if you take a fast train, you can get to Florence in a little over two hours, but this pleasure will also cost 50 euros one way.

Rimini is the most popular resort of the Adriatic, consisting of 15 km of sandy beaches, and also a center of "shopping tourism". One of the points of attraction for domestic businessmen is the largest exhibition complex in the Rimini Fiera region. The beaches, discos and hotels are accompanied by an unexpectedly interesting town, founded by the Romans back in 268 BC. e. Rimini is a place where Italians themselves go: the food here is excellent, the coastline is the same, and the sights give the rest their zest. However, someone will prefer another highlight: one of the largest shopping malls in Emilia-Romagna, Le Befane, is so large that it changes the entire landscape of the western part of the city.

Back in Rimini, Fellini was "noted", who is speculated here no worse than in Verona on Juliet. The director's museum is located in the historical part of the city and is as popular with Italians as with tourists. And the story of the tragic love of local Paolo and Francesca immortalized in Dante's Divine Comedy.

How to get to Rimini

Rimini has an international airport named after the great Federico Fellini, a railway station and a bus station. In summer, Pobeda, Ural Airlines and Khan Air fly from Russia to the resort. And from other cities in Italy it is convenient to get here by train, bus and car. In the off-season, the number of flights decreases, but the magnificent Bologna is not far away - there are flights from Russia all year round.

Connectivity and Wi-Fi

The tariffs of mobile operators in Rimini are rather big, but calling to Russia from a local SIM card is still more profitable than from a home one. The city is well served by 3 main Italian operators - TIM, Wind and Vodafone. Each of them has special offers for tourists, by connecting them you can call home for only 0.10-0.30 EUR per minute. The cost of tariff plans together with international calls service varies from 16 to 20 EUR. There are many branded communication salons in the center; packages are also sold in grocery and other stores, for registration you will need a passport.

Free Wi-Fi is available in many hotels, cafes and restaurants. In some it is password protected and accessible only to clients and visitors, in others anyone can connect. All the beaches of Rimini and some public places in the center - Piazza Cavour, some parks and squares are also equipped with access points. In addition, 3-5 GB of mobile Internet are included in any tariff of local mobile operators.

Rimini Accommodation

The number of rooms is represented mainly by hotels, there are several apartments, hostels and guest houses. There are no budget proposals like a bed in a room for 10 people, but in general the prices are affordable - the cost of a day in a double room starts at 20 EUR. And this is in the city center, not far from the beach.

The resort is popular with tourists, so more than half of the accommodation options for June-August are booked in March.

The price almost does not depend on the location, as well as on the "stars". There are few luxurious multi-storey complexes here, instead of them there are cozy family hotels with several dozen rooms. In the category without "stars" or 1-2 * prices range from 20 to 200 EUR per night in a double room. A lot of "three rubles" - 20-500 EUR per day. Prices for hotels 4-5 * start from 40 EUR. So you can find an affordable number in any category.

Rimini beaches

The entire coast of Rimini is suitable for beach holiday... It is clean and well maintained, equipped with all the tourist amenities - umbrellas, sun loungers, toilets and changing rooms. True, most of the resort's beaches are paid. This does not mean that you cannot go to the sea and swim, the entrance is free. However, it is often impossible to stay with your towel for a long time without paying for an umbrella and sunbed. Even in the free zone, between the last row of sun loungers and the sea, an employee may come up and ask to put things away.

The coastline is divided into small sections, which have been handed over to management. Some are managed by coastal hotels: they provide their guests with discounts on the use of beach infrastructure or include it in the cost of living. The beaches are numbered from 1 to 150, at the entrance to each there is a reception where you can pay for a sun lounger and get a key to the locker room. The prices are posted nearby at the stands, the prices are about the same - 6 EUR for a sunbed, 16 EUR for a set and 20 EUR for a set of two sun loungers and an umbrella per day. There are subscriptions on sale for a week, 15 days or a month.

The resort has two municipal beaches - No. 1 and No. 100. There you can relax there for free with your own towel. However, the sand is not so clean, there are stones and shells.

The Rimini coastline is great for families with small children. It is shallow, the sea is calm, the entrance to the water is smooth. Almost every beach has slides and swings, water attractions and volleyball courts. On the wide coastal strip, there was enough room for bars and restaurants. There are no problems with safety either - rescuers are on duty at the towers. When swimming is unsafe, or they are not there, a red flag is posted.

Italy: test of 11 difficult questions. Try to answer correctly on 11/11:

Diving

Although the sandy bottom makes the waters off the coast of Rimini muddy, there are ample opportunities for diving. To fully enjoy the underwater scenery, it is best to dive on calm days and away from the coast. The warm Adriatic Sea is home to many colorful fish, turtles, starfish, corals and other living creatures. The greatest variety and best visibility is in natural park Mount San Bartolo. Also worth a visit is the man-made reefs - flooded artificial island Roses, the former Hermit drilling platform, Pyramids and others are interesting dive sites.

For lovers of the river, there is also something interesting - flooded ships and aircraft. They are already overgrown with underwater vegetation, they are inhabited by fish and corals, but the frames have survived. There are many diving clubs in the city that organize trips to the sites and swims for beginners and professionals. Moderate prices - 20-40 EUR for a dive, travel to riverside facilities - from 50 EUR.

Shopping

Having settled in Rimini, be prepared to contemplate the "professional shoppers" in their natural habitat. A lot of shops are concentrated in the city center on the streets of Garibaldi, Gambalunga, Corso Augusto and Tre Martiri square, as well as on the waterfront. Usually they are open from 10:00 to 20:00, lunch break: from 12: 00-13: 00 to 16: 00-17: 00, closed on Sunday. Read more on the pages Shopping in Rimini and Outlets in and around Rimini.

Rimini cuisine and restaurants

The Emilia-Romagna region is one of the world-renowned gastronomic centers of Italy. It is the birthplace of Parmesan, Parma ham, the famous Bologna sausage "mortadella" and balsamic vinegar. The largest factory for the production of Barilla pasta is also located here. The choice of the latter in local restaurants is huge - from the well-known carbonara to original dishes with mussels. In addition to the standard spaghetti, they serve capellini and other types of pasta. The restaurants in Rimini make excellent desserts - terramissa and panna cotta.

Lovers of sparkling wines should pay attention to Lambrusco. It is produced in neighboring Bologna from grapes grown in the Emilia-Romagna region.

An average dinner in Rimini restaurants will cost 10-12 EUR (excluding drinks). Some eateries offer set meals for 18 EUR, which includes 0.25 liters of wine. By the way, you can taste the local wine, having previously conducted an excellent tasting, at the Tenuta del Monsignore winery. Those who want to save money should pay attention to fast food. Piadina (lavash with meat and vegetable filling), pizza or panino sandwich can be had for 5 EUR. But dinner in a gourmet restaurant will cost 150-200 EUR for two. Entertainment and attractions

There is a lot to do in Rimini besides a beach holiday. Fans of excursion tourism will like the historical part of the city, where many architectural monuments have been preserved. One of the most notable is the Arch of Emperor Augustus. Previously, it served as a gateway to the city, now it is located almost in the center. Another interesting building is the Tiberius Bridge. This massive crossing is striking in its strength - the wooden piles have withstood 2000 years.

Less than 500 meters from the Arch of Augustus, another fragment of the ancient Roman walls can be seen in the Alcide Cervi Park.

Have you successfully waited out on the beach for a three-day acclimatization period? Tried hotel breakfast and coastal cocktails? Did you meet the family from the next room? Shake off the usual worries of a six-month report and a three-course meal? Then it's time to get to know Rimini from its non-beach side. Believe it or not, this one is also available.

This city is full of attractions, shops, parks and other delights. Walking in Rimini will be remembered by both children and adults, it is important to think over the route.

But you won't be able to feel a little bit Italian: during the season, Russian is heard everywhere. In Moscow, this bothers very few people, but in Rimini it causes bewilderment.
