History

Aviation enthusiast, entrepreneur Artur Antonovich Anatra in 1908 bought a plot of land in the steppe, near the Shooting Field military range, placing there aircraft repair and assembly workshops (since 1913 - Anatra Airplane Plant), an aeroclub (since 1910 - a pilot school) and a school airfield used for training and test flights. Later the name "Shkolny" was officially assigned to the airfield.

The history of the airport in Odessa began in 1924. Then an air station was opened at the Shkolny airfield, which on May 21 took the first technical flight, and on May 25 - the first passenger flight of Ukrvozduhput on the route Kharkov - Zinovievsk - Odessa. A little later, the Odessa - Kiev - Chernigov - Moscow flight was opened, and since the beginning of the 1930s, flights were opened on the Odessa - Nikolaev - Krivoy Rog - Dnepropetrovsk - Kharkov line on the first Soviet passenger aircraft K-5 (the flight lasted about 6 hours from three landings).

From the late 1940s to 1961, the main airport in Odessa was Zastava Airport (with a 800 m long unpaved runway). Since 1961, it was used to carry out aviation work (primarily agricultural) on An-2 aircraft and helicopters, then it was closed. In the 1960s - 1980s, from the Zastava airport, a large number of passenger flights on An-2 aircraft to regional centers and large villages of the Odessa region. In 1994, the airport "Zastava" was closed, now it entered the territory of the Western cemetery of the city of Odessa.

In 1960, on the territory of the Shkolny state aviation airfield, an artificial runway (at the current location) with a length of 2800 meters, an apron, and then the terminal building (since then, the Shkolny airfield (on which is still based aircraft repair plant and aviation of the border troops) does not have its own artificial runway, and uses the airport strip for takeoffs and landings). In 1961, the new Odessa airport was commissioned and began to receive Tu-104 jet passenger aircraft. Odessa airport was one of three airports in the Ukrainian SSR that could receive airliners of this type.

The main airport facilities, on the basis of which the Odessa United Squadron operated, created in 1961 as an independent enterprise, were built in 1960-1961 (runway, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, aviation technical base, air traffic control building other). The area of the airport is 570.8 hectares.

The air terminal complex, the total throughput of which as of 2013 is 400 passengers per hour, is intended to serve international and domestic lines. In 1982, a cargo terminal was built.

Specifications

On December 7, 2016, a Boeing 767-300 landed at the airport for the first time, for which the airport is not certified. By this board the Manchester United team arrived in Odessa.

The airfield, built 50 years ago, was practically not reconstructed in subsequent years. The main inconsistencies are in the condition of the airfield pavements (unsatisfactory evenness and insufficient bearing capacity), in their insufficient geometric dimensions, as well as in the complex longitudinal and transverse profiles of the runway and taxiways.

The structure of the runway, taxiways, aprons and aircraft parking areas is represented by rectangular cement-concrete slabs 24-26 cm thick on a compacted soil base, reinforced with two-layer asphalt concrete 16-20 cm thick, (for RD-1 - two-layer asphalt concrete 12 cm thick with a reinforcing geogrid ). Bearing capacity of aerodrome pavements (classification number ACN-PCN): Runway - 30 / R / C / X / T; MRD (1 account) - 21 / R / B / X / T; MRD (2 accounts) - 16 / R / B / X / T; apron - 17 / R / C / X / T.

Airport reconstruction

As of the summer of 2013, the renovation is ongoing. During his visit to the site, the former mayor of Odessa, Aleksey Kostusev, noted that clear progress was being made in the construction of the new terminal. The zero construction cycle has already been completed, that is, the foundation is completely ready. The frame of the building was also built up to the level of the third floor, and at the end of July it is planned to install the roof. At the moment, the readiness of the frame is 50%, by the end of the year it is planned to carry out internal work and begin the installation of equipment. The commissioning of the object was planned in September 2014.

As of 03.03.2015, 85% of metal structures weighing more than 1000 tons have been assembled, 100% of the facade frame of the new terminal of the Odessa International Airport has been completed. Completed the construction of a transformer substation and installation of an on-site storm sewer, concreting of racks for galleries, ladders, and elevator shafts. After the completion of the roofing work, the builders will start glazing the facade, installing the internal networks and terminal equipment.

As of 07.21.2015, the roof is 100% assembled. Glazing of the terminal's facade is expected in the near future; at the moment, the installation of racks is in progress, which will hold the glass panels. After the completion of these works, the asphalting of the entrances to the main entrance of the terminal will begin. All communications necessary for the functioning of the facility have already been laid.

On September 7, 2015, the director of Odessa International Airport LLC Andrey Shatyuk announced that the new terminal was planned to be commissioned on June 15, 2016. It is also planned to attract volunteers to test the terminal and transfer charter flights at the initial stage of its operation. In the near future, the installation of the facade and the improvement of the adjacent territories will be completed, after which the interior decoration of the building will begin.

A little earlier, the management of the low-cost airline Wizz Air expressed their interest in resuming cooperation with the Odessa airport. However, this will not happen before the construction of the new terminal and runway is completed at the airport.

09/10/2015 Minister of Infrastructure Andrey Pivovarsky said that the construction of a new runway for Odessa airport, which is 75% owned by a private company, given the priority of this project for the region, will be financed from the state budget. Construction can start in 2016 and end in 2017. The issue of both the construction of a new runway and the reconstruction of the old one is being considered. The project is estimated at $ 80-200 million. At the moment, negotiations are underway to find the necessary funds. With whom, however, it is not specified.

At the beginning of April 2016, the installation of the general sewerage system of the terminal was completed, which made it possible to finish filling 2/3 of the floor area of the first floor. Installation of ventilation, smoke removal and fire extinguishing systems is in progress. The installation of transitional galleries between the terminal building and the receivers of the bridges is nearing completion. The metal structures of the galleries are assembled on the ground, and then, with the help of cranes, they are assembled to the terminal and receivers. By the end of this month, it is planned to complete the installation of electrical networks, fire alarms, water supply and sewerage systems by floors.

At the beginning of June, the terminal is 70% ready and will be commissioned in September. From now on, it will operate in test mode for 2-3 months, receiving domestic flights. The terminal will be fully operational in March 2017, when the work of the international checkpoint will be fully organized.

“The construction of the terminal is approaching its final stage.

Today the question is about the need to build a new runway. Already this week I plan to appeal to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Minister of Infrastructure with a request to provide funds in the state budget for these purposes, ”commented Gennady Trukhanov on the results of the workshop.

In October 2016, the Odessa city administration came close to receiving government funding for the construction of a new runway. The mayor said that he had discussed the issue of financing with Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman and Minister of Transport Andrei Pivovarsky. At the meeting, a roadmap of actions was developed, which will make it possible to start work in the near future. The construction of a new runway will cost UAH 1.6 billion. In addition to the coating, it is planned to install modern equipment, which will make it possible to receive aircrafts in adverse weather conditions.

At the end of January 2016, the terminal was put into operation, however, according to the mayor, the terminal will start accepting flights not earlier than spring 2017, and only domestic ones. The terminal was accepted by experts from Kiev, now the site is expected to be accepted by the local authorities.

The issue of allocating funds for the construction of a new runway, which the city plans to start in 2017 and complete by 2018, is also being resolved. The estimated time frame for the project is 26 months.

Launch of a new terminal

On April 15, 2017, the new terminal began serving domestic flights. The first was flight 0057 of UIA from Boryspil. The terminal will also receive flights of Motor Sich Airlines from the Kiev airport.

What to do if your flight is canceled

If the flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, then passengers are transferred to similar flights of the airline. The costs are borne by the carrier, the service is free for the passenger. If none of the options offered by the airline suits you, most airlines can issue a "forced return". After confirmation by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. It can sometimes take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on the websites of most airlines. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can pass it no later than 1 hour before the departure of the plane.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • the identity card specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • printed itinerary receipt (optional).
  • What you can take with you on the plane

Carry-on baggage is items that you take with you on board the aircraft. The allowance for the weight of hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). Ladies' bag is not carry-on baggage and can be carried freely.

The bag that you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from duty free shops can only be carried in sealed bags.

How to pay for baggage at the airport

If the weight of baggage exceeds the norms established by the airline (most often - 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess weight. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, baggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print your boarding pass, you can get it at the airline's regular check-in counter, and check in and drop off your baggage there.

Where to find out the time of arrival if you are a greeter

You can find out the time of arrival of the aircraft on the airport's online scoreboard. The Tutu.ru website has an online scoreboard of the main Russian and foreign airports.

You can find out the number of the exit (gate) on the arrival board at the airport. This number is located next to the inbound flight information.
