Lindos fortress in rhodes. What hotels in Lindos have nice views? Lindos, attractions and entertainment

Lindos is the real gem of the island of Rhodes.
Even if you come to Rhodes to lie down on the beach and swim in the sea,
it is worth carving out half a day to visit this wonderful place.
You will not see such cities anymore in Rhodes, and in Greece I think there are few places left.
We drove to Lindos from the south of the island after visiting Prasonisi.
To get to Lindos, you need to follow the main road along the southern coast of the island and to
turn the right moment according to the signs. If from the south of the island, there will be a right turn to Pefki
as soon as the road leaves the sea. If you are from the north of the island, turn left just outside Kalathos town.
There are many parking lots, you can stop not on the road, but down to St. Paul's Bay.

Lindos is one of the three oldest cities on the island. Of three cities (Lindos, Kameiros and Ialliasos)
only Lindos has survived as a residential city. We visited Kameiros - only ruins remained of this city.
Lindos was founded back in the 10th century BC. The Acropolis of Lindos is considered the second most important in Greece, after Athens.

We left the car in the parking lot at St. Paul's Bay. The bay is named after the Apostle Paul who visited the city in 43 AD.
This is one of the two bays of Lindos, the other is on the other side of the cliff.
The convenient combination of two closed coves and high cliffs made Lindos a center of maritime trade in ancient times.

Panorama: on the left, the Acropolis of Lindos, on the right, the cove of St. Paul.

The bay has clear water and two rocky beaches from different sides.
Boats in St. Paul's Bay.

The Acropolis of Lindos rises above St. Paul's Bay. The height of the rock is 116 meters.
In ancient Greek times, a temple was built on the rock to the goddess Athena Lindia.
This temple was considered the second most important after the Temple of Zeus in Athens, it was visited by Alexander the Great during his
hikes.

To climb to the acropolis, we will walk through the whole city.
Entrance to Lindos.

The remains of an ancient Greek amphitheater are visible on the rock.

The streets are very narrow; any new buildings are prohibited in the city. All buildings are painted white.

There are many souvenir shops on the way to the acropolis.
This store sells ceramics.

And here they sell lamps. The stairs lead up to the rooftop restaurant.

The ascent to the acropolis is quite difficult, but the views are simply wonderful

The Acropolis of Lindos reflects the entire history of Lindos from the Draenegreek times to the Knights of St. John.
Originally, an ancient Greek temple was built on the rock. Then walls were added to it.
The Romans also noted: a castle was erected in 300 AD.
After the Romans, the castle was already completed and strengthened by the knights-johannites.

The Acropolis has been restored since the early 20th century. Archaeologists are still working here.

From the height of the acropolis, amazing views open up:

We go down: you can see an Orthodox church with a bell tower.

You can climb and descend from the acropolis not only on foot, but also on horseback on a donkey taxi :)

On the way back, we got a little lost in the interweaving of the narrow streets of Lindos.

View of Lindos and the bay on the way to Kalathos.

There is a small town in the Greek Rhodes - Lindos, which in popularity among tourists surpasses all other attractions of the island combined. Small and dazzlingly white, it has stood for more than three millennia and has not turned into abandoned ruins, but on the contrary, it has only become more beautiful! Hundreds of tourists come here every day and wander through its cozy streets, and, of course, I was no exception.

Lindos was founded by the Dorians in the 12th century BC. In those early days, it was a thriving city-state known as a center for trade and shipbuilding. Despite the fact that Lindos recently celebrated his 3000th birthday, he clearly does not look his age. From many ancient cities, only ruins and memories have long been left, and Lindos stands as new and pleases the eye with its snow-white appearance! So it is imperative to come here during your vacation in Rhodes.

You can get to Lindos either by a regular bus that runs from Rhodes, or by car. For those traveling by car, I will tell you right away that there is NO parking in the city itself. You can park for free along the road, which runs a little to the side of the city, or on the beach of Lindos. I made an unsuccessful attempt to huddle on the beach, and then returned to the large parking lot by the road, where finding a place during the day was also difficult. It takes 10-15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the city, but theoretically you can get to the city, pick up / drop off passengers and return to the parking lot. But the driver will still have to walk.

Lindos is an exclusively pedestrian city, and since it is located on the side of a mountain, you have to walk up and down all the time. If this is difficult for you, you can use the services of a local donkey "taxi". The donkey park is located at the bottom of the entrance to the city, and for 5 euros you will be taken all over the city up to the entrance to the Acropolis. Or you can just walk around the city, so how do you agree with the "taxi driver". And keep in mind that 5 euros is just a one-way ticket, and you will not be driven for this money all day.

Judging by this photo, local residents are still allowed to use motorized vehicles. But probably not during the day, when all the streets of Lindos are packed with tourists and donkeys.

Upstairs, over Lindos is an ancient Greek Acropolis and Fortress of the knights-johannite which are considered the main attraction of the city and where all the tourists go. It is said to be the second most beautiful acropolis in Greece after the Athenian one. There are also the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Athena Lindia, after which the city is named.

But as for me, these are just ancient Greek ruins, which I have already seen enough in other places. And given that you have to pay another 12 euros for the entrance, I decided to believe the word and just walk around the city, which, in my opinion, is more interesting than the ancient Greek ruins. And I will see the Acropolis in Athens, because someday I will get there.

White quiet and cozy streets - that's, in my opinion, the main attraction of Lindos!

All buildings in Lindos are built in the same style, which is very much reminiscent of the white cities of Santorini. But there are no blue roofs here. But greenery and flowers are in abundance!

It is said that these houses used to be inhabited by wealthy merchants and ship captains.

And now ordinary Greeks and their furry pets live here.

Sometimes you walk down the street, look into the courtyard, and there is a small and cozy restaurant.

That's really what, but you will definitely not stay hungry in Lindos. There are taverns at almost every step.

Quiet, calm, cozy, snow-white, but a little expensive compared to other less touristy towns on the island.

Lindos is full of small Orthodox churches that look like ordinary houses but with a cross on the roof.

For some reason, most of them are closed. It's strange, I'm used to the fact that in this country all churches are always open.

The most famous in Lindos is the 13th century St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. This is a small church in the very center of the city, the doors of which were open. I was especially impressed by the wall frescoes in this church, which adorn all the walls of the temple. You can find this church by the famous bell tower, which can be seen from afar. Admission is of course free.

Near the town there is a gorgeous beach of the same name in a beautiful turquoise lagoon.

It is a sandy beach in a small bay with a very shallow entry into the sea. Children will definitely like it here, but those who like to swim will have to go for a very long time in search of depths. If you want to come here exactly to the beach, keep in mind that the parking lot by the beach is tiny, and to park, you need to arrive as early as possible, otherwise you will have to park your car at the top of the road and go down on foot. Sun beds are naturally paid - 5 euros, as elsewhere on the island.

Is it possible to live in Lindos? - Yes, of course you can!
There are no hotels in the city itself, but you can stay in numerous small guesthouses or simply rent accommodation. I had thoughts of living in Lindos, but ... prices are biting here. And if you consider that this is the most popular tourist destination and there is always a sea of tourists here, then living in crowded Lindos is a dubious pleasure.

And of course, Lindos is full of shops. These are standard souvenir shops where you can buy both traditional Greek goods and all kinds of junk from Asian countries. Since the city is tourist, the prices are appropriate here. I would advise buying souvenirs in Rhodes, they are a little cheaper there.

Lindos is especially beautiful in the evening at sunset (and after it). We wandered around the city itself during the day, and then left for. But on the way back, passing by Lindos, I saw a gorgeous picture and stopped to take some pictures.

With this my acquaintance with the white tourist pearl of Rhodes came to an end. Yes, the city is beautiful, but there are too many tourists here. But this is the 21st century, everything popular places overwhelmed with tourists for a long time ...

Even for such ancient country like Greece, the history of the small town of Lindos on the island of Rhodes is unusual. According to one version, the city-state of Lindos was founded by the Dorians in the 10th century BC. There is a version that the city is 27 centuries old.

The city is mentioned by Homer and Herodotus. There were three oldest cities- Lindos, Kameiros and Ialliasos, of which only Lindos has survived. Only ruins remained of the other two.

Lindos was one of the participants in the Trojan War and is mentioned in the Iliad.
Lindos was a famous city in the ancient world. The city with a beautiful port, consisting of two closed bays, located at the intersection of sea routes, was the center of the Mediterranean trade.

The important marine significance of the city is confirmed by a petroglyph - a bas-relief depicting an ancient Greek warship. The author of the work is the sculptor Pifocrates. It is no coincidence that it was in Lindos that the very first known code of maritime law was created and ratified - the famous Rhodes Code of Mariners.

Lindos was a very influential and wealthy city. He was famous for his navy and sailors. The city could not be captured by the powerful Persians, and Alexander the Great. But against the power of the Roman Empire, the city was powerless. During the Roman rule, Christianity appeared in Lindos.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lindos became part of the Byzantine Empire. From that time on, the golden age of Lindos ended. The city was turned into a fortress, which was used by the Byzantines, the Ionite knights and, finally, the Turks. All eras have left their mark on the architecture of the Acropolis.

How to get there

separates from the center from Lindos 55 kilometers. But there is no straight road. You can get to Lindos from the airport by regular bus, taxi or rented car.

Another way to get to Lindos is by ferry from the port of Rhodes. But the road by sea is obviously longer than the land one. In addition, Lindos hotels are often located a few kilometers from the port, and you still have to take a taxi upon arrival.

The most economical way is, of course, the bus. There is tourist information on the direct bus from the airport to Lindos. But it is possible to find the price and timetable only upon arrival at the airport, and these flights are quite rare. It is easier and safer to get from the airport to the city of Rhodes, which takes 15 - 20 minutes and costs 2.20 euros; in Rhodes, take a bus to Lindos.

There are 7 such flights per day, with 6 of them in the range from 6.45 to 14.30 hours, the last flight at 19.30. The fare is 5 euros, the journey takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

It is a little more profitable to buy tickets from kiosks at bus stops, but the drivers also sell them. It is imperative that you keep your tickets. there are controllers on the lines, and the penalty for travel without a ticket is significant.

A taxi ride from the airport to Lindos will cost from 4,851 rubles, depending on the class of the car.

Many hotels provide a paid shuttle service to the hotel. This should be clarified in advance.

Where to stay

The city of Lindos, made up of white, crowded houses, leaves little room for hotel construction. Therefore, almost all hotels in Lindos are located outside the city.

For tourists who want to spend time not only on the beach, this is a certain inconvenience. When choosing a hotel in Lindos, be sure to pay attention to the distance from the center.

sights

The Acropolis is located in the center of ancient Lindos on a high cliff.... This architectural masterpiece of world importance was built in the 2nd century BC. Then it is the largest Acropolis in Greece.

The center of the Acropolis is the famous temple of Athena of Lindos, famous far beyond the borders of Rhodes, built according to Homer in the 14th century BC. We give it. Danai was the son of the Egyptian king Bel, and is considered the ancestor of the Danai. According to legend, the temple was built by Danae and his 50 daughters when they were hiding here from anger. The great Alexander the Great came to this temple to worship the goddess.

The Acropolis was originally much larger. He combined defensive and cultural functions. There were many temples, a square, amphitheaters, warehouses with water and food supplies.

The ascent to the Acropolis is quite steep. But you can use the services. Their "services" are priced at 5 euros.

The amazing antique theater is carved right into the rock. During the time of the Hellenes, all the structures of the Acropolis were a single ensemble, an excellent example of ancient Greek architecture.
Knights - Ionites erected a medieval castle of the Order of St. John in the Acropolis.

Around the city, knights in the 14th century erected a protective wall, which finally made the city impregnable for enemies. In order to get to the Acropolis, you need to go through the fortress. Narrow ladders without railings are not safe, especially for children.
Over its centuries-old history, the Acropolis of Lindos has been destroyed many times by earthquakes and has been reconstructed.

The Acropolis of Lindos overlooks St. Paul's Bay.

According to legend, the Apostle got into a fierce storm when he sailed on a ship past the island. Paul offered up a prayer for salvation, a passage opened in the rocks, and the ship was saved. This is how a beautiful bay appeared. The apostle remained on the island and began to preach Christianity here. In the place where the Apostle Paul landed on the shore, a chapel was erected.

In Lindos, during the Byzantine Empire, the ancient Christian Temple of St. John was built.

There are no large shopping centers in ancient, one-story Lindos. Small shops are located in the city center.

It sells: jewelry, wine, olives and, ceramics, souvenirs, shells and sponges. But Lindos is famous for its ceramic workshops, and the products made in them.

Historical past of the resort

The history of Lindos is rich and varied.

It is rooted in the deep past. Lindos was one of three cities founded on the island of Rhodes as early as the twelfth century BC.

It was not just a city, but a thriving autonomous state, whose inhabitants were actively engaged in trade, navigation and crafts.

Due to its advantageous location, Lindos served as an important seaport and controlled many sea routes.

It was in this city that the "Rhodes Law on Navigation" was subsequently created, which served as the basis for modern maritime law.

How to get to Lindos

Lindos is a small provincial town, so there are not so many ways to get to it.

There is no airport or major train stations.

The easiest way to get to Lindos is from the nearest big city Rhodes (which is located on the island of the same name).

The path between these two cities is just over fifty kilometers. You can overcome it on one of the regular buses that leave from Rhodes to Lindos several times a day.

True, in this case, you will have to take into account that the city's layout is quite specific and does not allow the presence of cars in the old part of Lindos.

sights

Lindos is one of the most ancient cities in Greece, on a small territory of which a huge number of rare sights and unique architectural monuments are concentrated.

First of all, the following important objects deserve special attention:

  • Acropolis

The main pride of the inhabitants of Lindos, the most valuable attraction of this city.

The local Acropolis is the second largest and most important in the country. It is located on a picturesque cliff over a hundred meters high, at the foot of which there is a skillful bas-relief depicting an ancient Greek warship. This is a rare monument of ancient art that dates back to the second century AD and has no analogue in the whole world.

In the center of the Acropolis is its main temple - the temple of St. Athena of Lindos (it was built in the 4th century BC). This place was considered sacred, and people came here to worship from all over Greece. In particular, Alexander the Great himself often visited here.

Also in the Acropolis there is an ancient theater, which is distinguished by its unusual way of construction. The theater tribune and stage are not made of separate pieces of stone, but simply carved out of a single rock. All these most valuable buildings are combined into a common architectural ensemble, made in the traditional ancient Greek style.

True, there are later buildings on the territory of the Acropolis, for example, the castle of the Order of St. John, erected in the era of chivalry on the Acropolis. This amazingly beautiful building is distinguished by its power and asceticism, but at the same time it has a very elegant and unique appearance.

  • Vintage fountains- Another important detail of the appearance of Lindos. The city has a whole network of ancient fountains, which was created during the time of the Byzantine Empire. All these ancient fountains have survived unchanged to our time and function to this day.

  • Valley of the Seven Springs

Preserved to our times.

The town is located about 50 km south of the city of Rhodes, in a large bay overlooking the fishing village and the small resort of Charaki, 13 km from Lindos. Legend has it that the village was founded by one of the divine sons of the mighty Zeus the Thunderer.

Modern Lindos as a municipal district has about 4000 local residents, it includes a very small resort town (1100 inhabitants), around which there are excellent sandy beaches and the same small resort villages, including Kalatos (500 inhabitants) and Lardos (1400 residents).

Holidays in Lindos

A vacation in Lindos is somewhat reminiscent of childhood in the summer at my grandmother's - quiet, cozy cobbled streets, neat houses, carefree wandering domestic animals, and a short walk from the center of the town - an endless sandy beach, the gentle Mediterranean Sea, inviting to its penates ... In the evening Lindos comes to life - it turns into a fun, distinctive Greek resort, serving in taverns and having fun in bars and restaurants, the taste of vibrant resort life is felt everywhere ...

Tourists from Scandinavian countries, British, Germans and Austrians love to rest in Lindos.

But the east coast of Rhodes, in the center of which Lindos is located, is known not only for its excellent beaches, it is home to one of the main archaeological attractions of Rhodes - the Acropolis of Lindos and its companion - the restored temple of the goddess Athena. All these architectural values are vigilantly guarded by the state, so the ancient Greek isle of civilization, which, in fact, is Lindos today, can give an undisturbed vacation during the beach season.

Where is Lindos located

Lindos is located in the center of the east coast of Rhodes, washed by the Mediterranean Sea. Nearby, a few kilometers away, is the Prasonisi cape, where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas "kiss" and meet. ...
