We rented an apartment near Freedom Square, this is the very center of the city, so we are mastering the local traffic, as they say in the course of the play.
When you stay in unfamiliar city for a short period, it is better to look for a place to stay in the center so as not to waste time looking for parking or exploring local public transport.
After crossing the border, do not forget to move the clock hands forward one hour
The place where we rented an apartment for two nights was ideal in terms of location. But about accommodation in Tbilisi a little later.
About Georgian cuisine
Immediately upon arrival we go for a walk around the old town. Tbilisi somehow immediately makes you feel at ease - the quiet, very green and therefore shady streets in the center of the capital of Georgia do not allow you to die from the summer heat, and from the numerous eateries you can smell fresh pastries and coffee. Our sense of smell has apparently become more acute because we spent most of the day driving and now is the time to not just refresh ourselves, but have a full dinner.
There are legends about Georgian cuisine; many names of dishes like satsivi, chakhokhbili, khachapuri, khinkali in themselves cause profuse salivation. I’ve heard from many that food is delicious everywhere in Georgia, so we go to almost the first restaurant we come across on the busiest and most popular street among tourists, Konstantin Abkhazi (Kote Abkhazi), also known as Leselidze Street in the past. In the semi-basement room we see Circassian hats hanging on the walls, episodes from the film “Mimino” and for some reason “Prisoner of the Caucasus” are shown on the TV screen, and Kikabidze sings from the speakers in a velvety baritone. All this surroundings should set the visitor up for a long and thorough feast. The surroundings are surroundings, but the main function of the restaurant is to provide tasty food and drink to the guest.
Alas, the owners failed here. It’s not that something turned out to be inedible, but... we expected more and we expected it quite rightly, because in the future there was no case where lunch or dinner became a disappointment for us. In this regard, advice for those who find themselves in Georgia for the first time:
- do not use establishments in busy tourist areas
- It’s better to determine in advance the establishment you want to go to. Use recommendations and reviews on the Internet or advice from locals. The owners of the apartment where you are staying will be happy to suggest some “secret” place.
- don't chase the surroundings. An original and expensive interior is not a guarantee that lunch will be delicious.
- The menu should not have too many dishes. If there are not very many items, this means that what is prepared is really good and not from semi-finished products.
- don’t take a lot of wine at once (homemade wine is usually served in liter jugs), first order a glass to try to see if it’s really as good as the owner says. Contrary to the prevailing stereotype about Georgia, homemade wine here is not always of high quality.
- do not order many dishes at once. Portions in Georgia are usually very large. Most often, one dish is enough for an adult. Salad portions in Georgian restaurants are also quite large and they are served for everyone, because for one eater such a quantity would be too much.
We will talk about Georgian cuisine more than once, but the city tour continues. We are again on Kote Abkhazi Street.
Sights of Tbilisi
This street is considered the main one in the old city and connects Freedom Square and Maidan Square. However, this street itself does not evoke any admiration; what is much more interesting is what is behind the facades of the buildings and on the adjacent streets. This is the same charming and original Tbilisi.
Here, where the townspeople live their ordinary lives, the image of which lies somewhere on the border between East and West. These streets are simultaneously reminiscent of Italian Siena and Istanbul and somehow Belgrade. Laundry hung out for everyone to see, some completely awkward superstructures and the famous Tbilisi balconies...
Maidan Square is in full swing with life, there is no escape from tourists (that is, from us either), there are cafes and restaurants all around, noise and fun. When night finally comes into its own, Tbilisi turns on the lights. Not only lanterns, all significant objects of the city are painted in unusual colors. I must say that the night lighting designers did a great job in Tbilisi.
The desire of the local authorities to please visiting tourists is striking - street names and even signs are, as a rule, duplicated in English. Almost all cafes and restaurants have menus in Russian, and signs are also often duplicated in Cyrillic. This is understandable; it is impossible for someone ignorant of the Georgian language to even roughly understand what is being said on this or that sign, since the Georgian alphabet is absolutely unique.
Despite the very ambiguous attitude of townspeople towards the Peace Bridge in the very center of the capital of Georgia, the bridge is impressive, and in the evening it completely fascinates with its futuristic shape.
This is how we find ourselves in Park Rike. Architects and designers here also showed remarkable imagination, building a giant piano here and a dancing fountain.
Meanwhile, the city continues to be filled with new colors, and the TV tower has already shown its neon outfit and the Narikala fortress is not far behind.
In general, the situation in the city after dark does not create a feeling of danger; Tbilisi and Georgia as a whole are considered a completely safe place. There is almost certainly crime here, but, as locals say, robberies, and especially threats to life, occur extremely rarely. Many people do not lock their doors at night or close their car windows.
The Sioni Temple also lit its lights. It seemed that he was clearly one of the leaders in the lighting competition. By the way, the history of one of the main temples of Georgia begins in the 6th century. Since then, of course, it has been rebuilt and reconstructed more than once, because Tbilisi has been the target of attacks many times, in each of which it was destroyed almost to the ground. The earthquake that occurred in 1668 contributed.
So this day, oversaturated with emotions and impressions, came to an end. It is, of course, impossible to see Tbilisi in these few hours, but this is our first date and a more intensive program of exploring the capital of Georgia is planned for tomorrow.
Where to stay in Tbilisi
Deciding on where to stay in Tbilisi is both very difficult and easy at the same time. On the one hand, the choice of hotels, apartments and hostels here is huge. On the other hand, with such abundance it’s easy to miss, especially when you don’t know the city. We booked the apartment in advance, but quite unexpectedly, literally the night before, I received a letter from the owners in the mail, where they tearfully asked to cancel the reservation because, according to them, something happened later and the apartment became uninhabitable for a long time. I had to quickly look for a replacement. We found beautiful apartments Dzveli Tiflisi in the very center of Tbilisi on Freedom Square.
2 rooms, a small kitchen, a spacious bathroom and a gorgeous view from the window. There is even a fireplace, but we did not use it, only at the urgent request of the younger one, we checked that there was no brownie sitting in the chimney and that Santa had not been stuck there since last year.
If you choose between a hotel and an apartment in Tbilisi, I would still choose the latter option. My research on this topic led to the following conclusion: there are not many large mid-price hotels in the old city. There are large ones. For example, on the square There is such a hotel in Svoboda. Its doors are always open for you.
Provided, of course, that you are willing to pay from 13 to 20 thousand rubles for a night’s stay here. For the apartments already mentioned above, located on the other side of the square, we paid 4 times less.
