What is the cruise control in the car for? How does manual transmission cruise control work? Video: cruise control from Hyundau

Cruise control (English cruise control, German Tempomat) is a system for automatically maintaining the speed of a car without the assistance of a driver, regardless of external factors - ups and downs of the road, wind direction, load on the car. In pre-computer times, equipping a car with such a device was problematic, although some craftsmen managed to fix the throttle in a certain position, creating the illusion of maintaining a constant speed on a flat road. When electronics came to power, the task was simplified: you just need to make friends with the cruise control system of the power unit.

Manufacturers produce ready-made kits for self-installation, consisting of an electronic unit, wiring and controls. To simplify the connection to specific connectors of the on-board network, such kits are usually unified for a group of cars, they are not universal. In particular, for such popular models with an electronic gas pedal as Hyundai Solaris, Renault Duster and Lada Granta, Drivenge and Jet-cruise KH devices are suitable. We decided to evaluate them - the complexity of installation, ease of use, clarity of work.

Both gadgets are Russian, their declared capabilities are similar. Both will fit both manual and automatic vehicles. True, on mechanics, after each gear change, the set speed value will be reset and a new engagement will be required. They also offer similar options: Jet-cruise KH has a jetter, Drivenge has a booster pedal.

Jetter and Booster Pedal

After installing such a device, the car, as a rule, begins to react differently to the gas pedal, without a characteristic delay. This immediate response creates the illusion of improved dynamics. It is clear that there is no real improvement and cannot be, since the gadget does not change the firmware of the motor's “brains”. It only slightly changes the performance of the accelerator pedal: with the same accelerator position, more fuel is supplied to the engine, therefore it seems that the car drove lighter and more dynamically. At the same time, the maximum speed and acceleration intensity when the pedal is pressed "to the floor" will not increase one iota. The same effect can be achieved without any jetters - just depress the pedal harder. Note that such systems do not cause any harm to the motor - however, they do not bring any benefit either.

Installed - looked

In the absence of modern cars, it is better not to undertake the independent installation of such devices. First of all, this applies to the Drivenge system: we were transported for more than two hours. Jet-cruise KH was installed twice as fast.

Drivenge. A lot of fuss. Drivenge is a branched system with multiple connectors that need to be plugged in underground under the front panel. You will have to drill the steering column cover to install the steering column lever. This control looks a little awkward: you can't press on it - it's just a place for buttons! And the design is frail: attachment to plastic cannot be otherwise. And the wires in the connectors are weakly rolled up - unreliable.

Jet-cruise KH. Installation is much easier. You can place the remote control with autonomous power supply on two common batteries in any convenient place - either under your left hand or under your right hand. A drill is only needed when installing the indicator LED. You don't have to drill anything at all if you bring the indicator out through a suitable slot, which we did in the first experiments. For a short time, it will do, but, in fact, doing this is a little undignified.

The approximate price of 8600 rubles.

The device allows you to turn on the cruise control at both the current and the last set speed. Change of settings - using the accelerator pedal or buttons with a step of 1 km / h. Automatic shutdown - when the brake or clutch pedal is pressed. The working range is from 20 to 160 km / h. The “pedal-booster” function has three operating modes: “economy”, “dynamics”, “sport”. It is possible to maintain an increased crankshaft speed at idle - for example, to warm up the engine. In the "sport" mode, the pedal seems too sharp, but the "economy" is quite like it as a winter mode on snowy and slippery roads.

The approximate price is 11,200 rubles.

There is a sound alert about reaching or exceeding the speed threshold set by the owner. Installation step - 1 km / h. The working range is from 40 to 150 km / h. Change of settings - using the gas pedal or buttons. Automatic shutdown - when the brake or clutch pedal is pressed. The self-powered jetter implements one of three modes: "speaker", "economy" or "sport".

Features of operation

Those who have traveled in cars equipped with standard "cruises" will most likely not be attracted by such products - they are not very convenient to use, they look unrespectable. But if such toys are new to someone, they may well come to the yard.

Isn't it dangerous to ride with these devices if they suddenly fail? After all, we intervened in the standard electrical equipment, breaking some of the control circuits of the machine ... We checked - when the power is disconnected from both systems, the ability to control the car remains. Therefore, the manufacturers of both devices did not violate the old principle of "do no harm".

Drivenge. I always want to press the new steering column "lever", which, moreover, "breathes" together with the steering column cover.

Jet-cruise KH. The remote control has no backlight - on a dark suburban road you will have to manipulate by touch. The indication works only when it is triggered.

Today we will talk about what cruise control is in a car.

So, Cruise control is a function of the car, with the help of which the driver does not have to press the gas pedal to move the car. This is the so called autopilot.
for the car. The driver sets a certain speed of the car and presses the "Cruise Control" button, after which the car maintains this speed.

A brief history of creation

The very concept of cruise control was invented back in the 40s of the 20th century, when speed control units were installed on trucks. The first full-fledged feature appeared on American muscle cars in the 80s. In the Soviet space, for the first time, the legendary GAZ-21 car was equipped with this function, which controlled the fuel supply.

What does the cruise control system consist of?

Components of Cruise control on modern cars:

  1. Control and measuring sensor on the instrument panel.
  2. Cruise control unit.
  3. Vacuum servo drive.
  4. Servo control valve.
  5. Additional throttle drive.
  6. Vacuum tubes.
  7. Vacuum system.
This system is installed only from the factory, since it is quite difficult to install it yourself, but there are craftsmen who do this on the Zhiguli and Volga.

Cruise control options

  • Simple... Developed after WWII. Regulated the fuel supply to the carburetor.
  • Analog... It was developed in the 80s in the USA. Installed for the convenience of driving long road distances. This system controlled fuel delivery and crankshaft speed. An additional lever was installed, which fixed
accelerator thrust, and a uniform supply of fuel kept the speed in a given position.
  • Digital... It was installed on cars of the late 20th - early 21st century. The control unit regulated the fuel supply. But, for unknown reasons, fuel consumption increased over time.
  • Super digital ... A cruise control option that is installed on modern cars. Efficient because fuel consumption is reduced as it is used. The range of work is 30-155 km / h.
  • Adaptive (ACC) ... It recognizes an object in front, at a certain distance, and automatically slows down or slows down altogether. Many modern cars are already equipped with this technology.

Pros of cruise control

  1. On long journeys, the driver's right leg gets tired less, which, accordingly, has a positive effect on the dorsal region.
  2. Reduced fuel consumption due to the fact that there are no differences in injection.
  3. Efficient use of the engine.
  4. If the type is set to ACC, then it is also safe, since the cars automatically reduce the speed.

Disadvantages of cruise control

  1. Inability to use on roads with frequent turns and descents. Each time the brake pedal is pressed, the function is lost and must be adjusted again.
  2. Servo motor breaks down with frequent use.

When should you not use Cruise control?

  1. Do not operate on slippery roads, as the vehicle speed is stable and braking on some road sections can lead to accidents and injuries.
  2. Not recommended for use in a busy city. The driver does not have enough reaction to brake, which leads to an accident.

Now you know what cruise control in a car is. After reviewing the main characteristics, it became clear that Cruise control is a rather useful function for driving on highways, and unsafe in winter and in the city cycle. Basically, the reviews of motorists who use it are positive.

Cruise control system - device and characteristics

Reading the characteristics of various cars, you can see that some configurations are equipped with a cruise control system. What is this system, what does it control and why is it needed at all?

First of all, it must be said that many people still cannot figure out the principle of the cruise control, and therefore either do not use it at all, or they try to use it, but they cannot.

Cruise control, in simple terms, is a device thanks to which you can maintain a constant set speed of the vehicle. First of all, it is best used during long journeys along suburban highways, because there is no need to constantly press the gas pedal, so the leg will not get tired.

Why did cruise control become popular?

For the first time, such a development was applied back in the 50s of the last century, but it was used extremely rarely due to technical problems and shortcomings. The real understanding of the benefits of cruise control came in the 70s when the financial crisis hit and gasoline prices skyrocketed.

With the cruise control system, fuel consumption when traveling on long routes is significantly reduced by maintaining optimal engine operation.

The drivers only had to keep an eye on the road. The invention was very popular with American drivers, because in the United States, distances are measured in thousands of kilometers, and the car is the favorite means of transportation for the majority of the population.

Cruise control system device

The cruise control system consists of several main parts:

  • control module - a mini-computer that is installed in the engine compartment;
  • throttle valve drive - this can be a pneumatic or electric drive connected to the throttle;
  • switch - displayed on the steering wheel or on the dashboard;
  • various sensors - speed, throttle, wheel speed, etc.

If the car comes off the assembly line with this option, then the cruise control is integrated into the overall vehicle management system. Also sold are ready-made systems that can be installed on a car with any type of engine or gearbox.

How does cruise control work?

(function (w, d, n, s, t) (w [n] = w [n] ||; w [n] .push (function () (Ya.Context.AdvManager.render ((blockId: "RA -136785-3 ", renderTo:" yandex_rtb_R-A-136785-3 ", async: true));)); t = d.getElementsByTagName (" script "); s = d.createElement (" script "); s .type = "text / javascript"; s.src = "//an.yandex.ru/system/context.js"; s.async = true; t.parentNode.insertBefore (s, t);)) (this , this.document, "yandexContextAsyncCallbacks");

The essence of its work is that the throttle control is transferred from the gas pedal to the cruise control servo. The driver selects the driving mode, enters the desired speed value, the system navigates itself and, depending on the conditions, selects the most optimal engine operating modes in order to maintain the desired speed level.

The systems are different, but the cruise control is controlled according to the same scheme:

  • On / Off - enable disable;
  • Set / Acceleration - set the speed - that is, you can transfer the throttle control to the cruise control and the speed that was at the moment of switching on will be maintained, or enter another higher speed indicator;
  • Resume - restore the last settings that were at the moment of shutdown (shutdown is done by pressing the brake pedal);
  • Coast - decrease in speed.

That is, the algorithm of work is approximately the following: On - Set (activation and setting the speed) - pressing the brake (off) - Resume (recovery) - Coast (decrease if you need to switch to a lower speed mode.

Typically, cruise control is activated at speeds above 60 km / h, although the system itself can work at 30-40 km / h.

Adaptive cruise control

At the moment, the most advanced system is adaptive. It practically approaches the analogue of an auto-pilot in aviation, with the difference that the driver still needs to turn the steering wheel.

Adaptive cruise control differs from ordinary cruise control by the presence of a radar, which analyzes the distance to vehicles in front and maintains the desired distance. If the front cars begin to slow down or accelerate, then the impulses are transmitted to the control module, and from there to the pneumatic throttle valve. That is, the driver does not need to put pressure on the gas on his own or, on the contrary, reduce the speed.

Development of more advanced systems is underway, the capabilities of which will be significantly expanded.

During long journeys, many drivers are faced with the fact that constantly holding their feet on the gas pedal in a fixed position leads to rapid fatigue. It is to simplify driving when driving long distances in modern cars, a system called cruise control is installed.

Take cruise control on a long journey

This is why it is so important to learn how to use cruise control on long journeys. At present, the installation of such a system is possible both on cars with manual gearboxes and automatic ones.

What is cruise control

Cruise control is a system designed to automatically maintain the speed set by the driver. Activation of this system in a car allows you to maintain a given speed limit regardless of the terrain, while not resorting to the tedious mechanical action of the foot on the accelerator pedal.

In cases when the road situation requires an increase in speed, for example, to overtake a passing vehicle, the driver simply presses the gas pedal and the car accelerates. To slow down the same car, the driver.

Pressing the brake and accelerator pedals temporarily deactivates the cruise control.

However, when such manipulations are stopped, the system automatically activates and restores the previously set speed, information about which is stored in the internal memory of the device.

Automatic speed control (cruise control)

The adjustment system has a cruise control switch - usually in the form of a single button. However, there are variants with several buttons for different functions. Standard cruise control has a button to activate and deactivate the system. Another button, designated "set", is used by the driver when the vehicle reaches the desired speed. To improve the information content, a corresponding indication is displayed, reflecting all actions with cruise control. The increase in traffic on motorways has led to the fact that more and more often the standard cruise control, called passive, is replaced by adaptive cruise control, which is a more advanced version of the system.

The main advantage of adaptive cruise control is the presence of additional functions that, although they do not replace the driver, make driving much easier and more comfortable. Such functions include automatic maintenance of the distance to the vehicle in front, prevention of unauthorized rolling off hills, automatic braking in the event of an obstacle, etc.

Cruise control

Cruise control can be activated both while driving and when the vehicle is parked. The activation of the system is accompanied by a corresponding light indication on the dashboard, the color of which depends on the car model.

Pressing the cruise control lever causes the vehicle to pick up and hold the last speed stored in memory.

As a rule, it can record the speed from 40 km / h and above. The presence of an emergency function in the cruise control allows you to instantly turn it off when you press the brake pedal.

Cruise control toggle button

To control the cruise control function in some car models, only one button is used, pressing which leads to automatic activation of the system. In this case, the cruise control is deactivated by pressing the brake pedal by the driver. If there are five standard buttons on the car dashboard or a special cruise control lever, the system is activated a little differently. Pressing the "on" button brings the on-board computer into readiness, and the cruise control is activated by pressing the "set" button, after which the speed is adjusted by pressing the gas pedal.

In order to determine the order of turning on the cruise control system installed on a particular car, you must carefully consider the control lever for it. The most basic cruise control systems, which can be operated with just one button, are automatically activated when it is turned on and deactivated when the brake pedal is depressed. In this case, the speed is regulated by pressing the accelerator pedal. In other cases, when the cruise control is controlled using five standard buttons, turning on the cruise control (the "on" button) means only that the car's on-board computer is ready to activate this system, which is done by pressing the "set" button at the speed set with the gas pedal.

Some features for different types of cars

Two of the extra buttons are for increasing and decreasing the vehicle speed. In most cases, each press increases or decreases the speed by 1 km / h.

cruise control can have multiple buttons

Here's a quick guide: Cruise control is controlled by additional buttons.

  1. Acceleration. Slightly pressing the lever and holding it in this position allows you to pick up the desired speed without the driver pressing the gas pedal.

Recording of the gained speed and writing it into the device memory is done by releasing the lever.

Interruption (failure) of the set speed occurs in cases when the current speed for 1 minute exceeds the stored speed by 10-16 km / h (depending on the car brand), or the current speed is lower than the set speed by 8-10 km / h ... To correct the speed, recall it again from the cruise control memory or set and save it again.

  2. Slowdown. Deceleration with the help of cruise control is carried out in the same way: the corresponding button (lever) is pressed and, after the speed has decreased to the required speed, it is released. In this case, the speed is fixed, and its value is stored in the device's memory. Short pressing leads to a decrease in speed by 1 km / h. In some cars, for example, BMW 525td, as well as cars equipped with an automatic stability control system, in order to maintain speed, it is necessary to write down the set speed in the device's memory and then use the cruise control already helps the memory, relatively speaking, of this device.
  3. Shutdown. The system is turned off by lightly pressing the corresponding button. The current driving conditions are irrelevant.

Switching off the engine will erase the speed recorded in the device's memory.

In addition, cruise control is deactivated when the driver brakes, when acceleration exceeds 1.5 m / s and when the automatic transmission control lever is moved to neutral (position N).

How to use cruise control

Dedicated switches on the clutch and brake pedals allow you to adjust the disengagement of the cruise control. The system also provides for the installation of a pneumatic actuator throttle control valve, which allows the car with activated cruise control to move without the driver pressing the gas pedal. In this case, the fuel supply is adjusted using a special cable connected to the throttle valve.

Thus, the cruise control control unit is a real minicomputer that quickly analyzes a lot of data entering it and maintains a given speed mode, being a good example of the real implementation of the theory regarding automatic control systems.

Think about safety

Ride comfort is not only about the driver's experience.

A tired driver can make a mistake that will lead to very sad consequences.

This is especially important. Several hours of driving, and even several days in a row, will challenge anyone, even a physically strong person.

cruise control is important for driving safety

Conclusion!

Modern means of increasing comfort are offered by car manufacturers, including for the elimination of such unpleasant complications. Even a novice driver who does not have much experience will not hurt to learn how to use cruise control while driving. This is not particularly difficult and does not require a lot of labor. But it will only benefit.

A modern car is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. An incredible number of various electronic assistants, complex systems and options allow you to multiply the comfort of driving your iron horse and save the driver's energy and nerves. Today we will talk about such an irreplaceable assistant as cruise control, and the specifics of its work on cars with manual transmission.

General information

To understand how cruise control works on a manual transmission, you should familiarize yourself in more detail with the features of its operation and at least approximately know the structure of such complex electronics.

Cruise control is designed to maintain a constant vehicle speed without driver intervention.

In other words, the driver does not have to pull his foot to the pedals once again to adjust the speed and constantly take care that the car does not lose speed on the track.

Many people claim that cruise control, as such, is a useless system and not so necessary on modern cars. The main argument in this controversy is that many cars in the recent past a priori did not have such an option even in maximum trim levels, and only a certain and rather narrow range of premium models were equipped with the coveted set of keys on the steering column lever.

However, in a certain number of cases, it will be so easy to do without this option. To understand whether it makes sense to purchase a package of options that includes cruise control, it is worth understanding where the car most often moves.

If the car spends most of the time in the city, jostling in traffic jams and driving in variable speed mode, there is no point in cruise control. Otherwise, you will have to constantly "play" with the controls and thus constantly load the already sensitive and expensive electronics.

Things are quite different if the driver constantly needs to move along the highway, away from cities. For example, driving for a long time on a flat, straight road requires constant effort on the accelerator pedal. If the driver constantly keeps the leg in the same position, it will quickly get tired and numb. To prevent this from happening, you just need to activate the desired button, and the leg can be immediately released.

Instructions for use

As you know, cruise control is the prerogative of a car that works with an automatic transmission. Indeed, in a car with an “automatic” it will be much easier to operate with cruise control - just press the gas pedal, accelerate your car to the required speed and fix the speed limit using a button on the steering column lever or the dashboard.

However, as surprising as it may sound, there are a number of manual transmission models on the market, where cruise control also works. On the mechanics, such a system has several features that are expressed in the nuances of its use while traveling.

How do you use cruise control? How does it work, and what do you need to know about such systems? Let's figure it out.

Typically, the cruise control control panel is located on the steering column lever, which, in combination, controls the lighting or wiper blades. The main controls are two switches with a two-way operating principle. They can be tilted left or right, depending on what needs to be activated.

The first switch is the cruise control lever. It should be translated from one extreme position otherwise, the system is activated and will be ready to work in the specified mode. Immediately on the on-board computer of the car, the corresponding indicator lights up, and on the dashboard - an icon depicting a speedometer with a limited scale. Often it is possible with the same key to reset the steady-state speed readings and deactivate the system.

Another switch is the adjustment of the operating mode and the key to fix the current speed. So, on cars with manual transmission, you need to select the desired gear, accelerate the car and press the fix button. The current speed will be displayed on the dashboard, and the car will maintain it automatically without the assistance of the driver.

If for some reason it is necessary to adjust the speed, and the cruise control is already activated, then there is no need to reset the current readings and accelerate or brake the car on your own. It is enough to move up or down the switch responsible for fixing the current speed. In this case, on the dashboard, the value of the fixed speed will change up or down, and the car will instantly accelerate to the set value.

A feature of the cruise control on vehicles with manual transmission is the inability of the system to independently change gears. In other words, when adjusting the speed, you will have to select the gear yourself, and during acceleration, manually control the transmission: otherwise, there are no differences from the systems on the automatic transmission.

Outcomes

Cruise control is, of course, a useful feature for those who move around the highway most often. Such electronics will not only save the driver from fatigue, but will also seriously save fuel. Moving the car at a constant speed will reduce the rate by 20-30 percent.
