Entertainment for passengers

During breaks between flights, you can get bored anywhere, just not at Changi Airport - the services here won’t allow you to do that. Singapore is known as a garden city, and after a long flight at the airport, you can start relaxing among several luxurious gardens.

Each terminal has a themed garden - a cactus garden, a fern garden, a bamboo garden, an orchid garden, a sunflower garden planted in the shape of a winding labyrinth, or a butterfly garden - there are more than a thousand species, and you can sit by a pond with Japanese carp. In the second and third terminals there are cinemas equipped with the most modern equipment, comfortable and cozy, where the latest blockbusters are shown.

Changi Airport: numbers and facts

In the ranking of world airports by passenger turnover, Changi Airport ranks 19th; with the commissioning of the third terminal in 2008, the airport's capacity increased to 70 million passengers annually. More than 80 airlines are used during flights.

I can’t say that the “city of the future” Singapore made a strong impression on me. However, Changi Airport was worth the trip to this small country in Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, one of my lenses “died” during the trip, so there aren’t many photos at all, but there is a lot of text. We tried to make this post useful, so if you find yourself in Singapore, take advantage of our small online guide to Changi Airport.

1.

Preparations for the construction of Singapore's Changi Airport began in 1975. In order to carry out this colossal project, when clearing the construction site, it was necessary to change the beds of three rivers, drain 2 km 2 of marshy area, and another 6.7 km 2 “take away” from the sea. The first airport terminal was opened in 1981, and its development continues to this day. During its short “life”, the airport won the title of the best airport in the world as many as 19 times (!). Changi is now Asia's premier aviation hub, serving an astronomical number of passengers each year.

2.

Despite the high congestion at the airport, you will not find crowds of people there. When we landed in Singapore, the first thing we felt was incredible comfort. The huge spaces are decorated very comfortably, the floors are covered with carpets, there are drinking fountains everywhere, flower beds, ponds, and signs make it easy to get lost. And, importantly, all the staff are very polite and friendly. All in all, Changi Airport has everything you need to create the right first impression of Singapore.

3.

But it’s not just for the carpets and kind border control that the airport has topped the list of the best airports in the world so many times. You can actually live in Changi. There is everything there to make transit through it as convenient as possible.

Singapore has only one international airport, Changi Airport. Therefore, if you decide to go to Singapore or transit through it, you will definitely end up at this airport. Many travelers advise choosing the maximum transit time because there is a lot to see at Changi Airport, and free city tours are available for transit passengers.

So, if you didn’t bring anything prohibited with you (read about what you can’t bring into Singapore), you went through border control without any problems and received your coveted free visa for 96 hours (read about how to do this) and took your luggage, you find yourself in one of the best airports in the world - international Airport Changi.

What can you see at Changi Airport? Changi Airport currently consists of four terminals. In the first three terminals there are Duty-free shops, Internet stations, smoking rooms, children's playgrounds, business centers and spas. In addition to this, in Terminal 1 there is a food court, a sports ground for children under 12 years old, a rooftop cactus garden, and there is also a swimming pool and jacuzzi that can be used for 13 SGD (free for hotel guests). It’s also home to one of Changi Airport’s most striking attractions, a permanent installation called Kinetic Rain.

IN Terminals 2 and 3 In addition to the main services, there are also cinemas, television showrooms and a mini-hotel “Transit Hotel”. In addition, Terminal 2 has a multimedia entertainment center, a post office and several gardens: the Enchanted Garden, the Orchid Garden and the Sunflower Garden; and in Terminal 3 there is a children's art studio, a food court, a speed slide "The Slide@T3" and a butterfly garden.

It should also be noted that throughout the transit areas of Changi Airport there is free WIFI (in order to connect to it, you need to dial # WiFi@Changi) and free foot massage chairs are available.

Terminal 4 Changi Airport opened quite recently - in November 2017. This is the smallest, but most technically equipped airport terminal. It has two floors with total area 225,000 sq. m, parking lots and taxis. Shops and other establishments are gradually opening there, and eventually there will be more than 80 shops, restaurants and cafes operating in the terminal.

This terminal is unique in that it is equipped with technology FAST, which stands for "Fast and Continuous Travel" for departing passengers. This means complete automation of the departure process - all departing passengers independently check in for the flight and all passport controls, check in their luggage and board the plane themselves. This does not require any personnel - only machines. Even the cleaners in this terminal are robots (and they don’t look like robotic vacuum cleaners, but like real robots).

The fourth terminal of Changi Airport demonstrates Singaporeans' love for eco-technologies - more than 2,000 square meters are covered with green spaces with an automatic irrigation system. To make it easier for passengers to navigate the terminal, the seats at each gate have the colors of the airline to which the gate belongs. All chairs in the waiting room have power sockets and USB ports. There are also many art installations, and the interior design features the triangular shape of an orchid petal (the orchid is the official symbol of Singapore).

Another addition is currently being created at Changi Airport - huge complex with ten levels containing forests, gardens and the tallest indoor waterfall in the world (40 meters high). This complex called Jewel Changi Airport should be completed in 2019.

Free tours of Singapore from Changi Airport. If your transit in Singapore is more than 5 hours, you have the opportunity to go on a free Singapore tour. The sightseeing tour includes the Singapore Flyer, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Esplanade Theater, the Merlion statue, which is a symbol of Singapore, and other attractions. Learn more about all the main attractions and interesting places I will write about Singapore in the next article.

To get on a free tour of Singapore, you need to register for it no later than an hour before it starts. This can be done at the “The Free Singapore Tours” counters, which are located in Terminals 2 and 3. Each excursion lasts 2 hours. Here is the schedule of free excursions in Singapore: 09:00-11:00, 11:30-13:30, 14:30-16:30, 16:00-18:00, 18:30-20:30. The evening tour (18:30-20:30) includes visits to the Bugis Village night market, the city's financial center and Marina Bay (these places look very impressive at night).

If you do not qualify for a free tour of Singapore, you can book a paid tour at Changi Airport sightseeing tour. Such excursions are carried out by bus "CitySightseeing", which depart every 15 minutes. CitySightseeing offices where you can buy tickets are also located in Terminals 2 and 3.

Currency exchange at Singapore Changi Airport. If you are not traveling through Singapore in transit, but have arrived to visit this city, you need to immediately take care of buying Singapore dollars. Of course, you can pay with a card almost everywhere in Singapore, but you will most likely need cash too (for example, when buying a subway ticket from a machine, to pay for bus fares, to pay for purchases at markets, etc.).

Often at airports the exchange rate is very unfavorable compared to exchange offices in the city, but in Singapore you don’t have to worry about this. Therefore, immediately after passing through passport control, we found an exchanger and exchanged 200 dollars for 278 SGD - this amount was enough for us for three days and still had a little left.

How to get from Singapore airport to the city? There are several ways to get to the hotel from Changi Airport, if you do not have a free transfer to the hotel: by bus, by shuttle bus, by metro or by taxi. If you want to go to the city for public transport and plan to use it in the future, it makes sense to purchase a card immediately "Ez-link".

"Ez-link" is a single travel ticket that will allow you to pay for travel on the metro, buses, monorail to Sentosa Island, water buses, as well as purchases in some stores, entrance to observation deck skyscraper “The Pinnacle@Duxton”, etc. Buy a card "Ez-link" Available at MRT (subway) stations, as well as at 7-Eleven stores. The cost of the card at MRT ticket offices is 12 SGD (of which 5 SGD is the non-refundable balance and 7 SGD is the balance on the card); the cost of the card at 7-Eleven is 10 SGD (of which 5 SGD is the non-refundable balance and 5 SGD is the balance on the card). Top up your card "Ez-link" possible for an amount that is a multiple of 10 SGD (10 SGD, 20 SGD, etc.).

Now I’ll tell you in more detail about each type of transport that you can use to get from Changi Airport to the city center.

To travel from Singapore Airport to the city by bus, you need to find bus stops, which are in all three airport terminals. You can find them by following the “Bus to city” signs. You can get from Changi Airport to the center of Singapore by bus number 36. The fare is 2.5 SGD (2017), with an Ez-link card - a little cheaper. By the way, when paying in cash to the bus driver, he does not give change, so if you choose this payment option, you need to prepare the exact amount.

To travel from Singapore airport to the city by shuttle bus, in the arrivals hall you need to find the “Ground Transport Desks” counter, where you can order a shuttle. The advantages of this type of transport are that it can take you directly to the hotel and it operates 24 hours a day. But it is worth using it if there are no more than two of you, otherwise it will be more profitable to take a taxi. The fare is 9 SGD for an adult ticket and 6 SGD for a child ticket.

To get from Singapore airport to the city by taxi, You can choose one of the options: a regular metered taxi and a taxi with a fixed fee. You will see a queue for a metered taxi as soon as you leave the baggage claim area. The cost of a taxi in Singapore from the airport to the city center will be approximately 20-30 SGD (at night regular price there is a surcharge of 50%, during rush hour - 25%). Taxis with a fixed fee can be ordered at the same counter where shuttle buses are ordered - “Ground Transport Desks”. The cost of a Singapore taxi with a fixed fee depends on the size of the car: a regular car will cost 55 SGD, a large seven-seater car will cost 60 SGD.

To travel from Singapore airport to the city by metro,First you need to get to terminals T2 and T3, where the entrance to the metro is located. Therefore, if you arrive at T1, you need to take the free Skytrain (you can find it at the Skytrain signs) - from 5:00 am to 2:30 am, or free bus- from 2:30 to 5:00. The Skytrain or bus will take you to one of the two terminals, and there you will find the entrance to the metro following the signs “Train to city” or “MRT”.

Payment for travel on the Singapore metro is carried out using an “Ez-link” card, which can only be purchased at ticket offices, or using a single travel ticket, which can only be purchased at a machine using cash (a bill of no more than 10 SGD). A special feature of this ticket is that you immediately pay a deposit of 10 cents, which can be returned after three trips using a special machine in the subway. The cost of travel on the Singapore metro depends on the distance, so when purchasing a ticket you need to select your destination station. On average, the cost of a trip on the Singapore metro is 1.6 – 2.5 SGD.

To get from Changi Airport to the center of Singapore, you need to go to the Tanah Merah station (two stops from the airport), get off at platform “B” and take the train there that goes to the city center - “To city”.

We chose the metro as the most budget-friendly transport, and it was also interesting to look at the Singapore metro. Therefore, we found out in advance which station was closest to our hotel, got to Terminal 2 and quickly found the entrance to the metro. But we managed to buy a ticket from the machine only on the third attempt (we didn’t buy an “Ez-link” card, because we like to walk everywhere and therefore didn’t plan to actively use it).

By the way, the Singapore metro is not at all like our dull, dirty subway - it is clean, bright and well equipped - for example, there are elevators for the disabled at every station. But it's easy to get confused, so be careful. So, for example, at the Tanah Merah station, we first boarded the wrong train and went on the wrong branch of the green line that we needed (the green line, where the airport station is located, has two branches that just converge at the station Tanah Merah). I had to return to Tanah Merah and take the train in the right direction. And, of course, in the Singapore metro, as elsewhere in this city, there are very large fines for non-compliance with the rules: for smoking - $1000, for food and drinks - $500, for transporting flammable liquids or gas - $5000.

Read about where you can inexpensively rent a hotel in Singapore and how to spend three days in this city in the next article!

Today we will walk through one of the most beautiful and convenient airports in the world - Singapore Changi and its three terminals and look at them from the point of view of an arriving, departing and transit passenger.

An Airbus A380 or a Boeing 777 is driven up to the ramp near that big beautiful inscription SINGAPORE CHANGI AIRPORT.

3. Usually all my arrivals into Singapore take place late in the evening on Singapore Airlines or Emirates flights to terminal two.

4. The first thing you see when you fall out of the ramp are long travelators towards the exit or transfer. Convenient navigation in black/yellow/red on black will indicate the direction. It is almost impossible to get lost here, and the steps are muffled by the cheerfully colored carpets that line all the terminals.

5. Who needs to get out of the way?
On the other side of the mirrors in the spacious foyer of the bathroom there are comfortable chairs where you can wait for a friend or sleep. There are also changing rooms.

6. And in the men's toilets, apparently, there are no changing cabins.

7. Let me remind you that in Singapore, traffic is on the right.

8. If we are going to the exit to the city, then we go to the end and run into customs. To the left there are elevators and escalators.
For visa-free 96-hour entry into the country, you need to have a hotel reservation and air tickets to third country of departure. That is, you cannot fly from Moscow for 4 days and fly back to Moscow - you simply will not be allowed into Singapore. But if you are flying, for example, to Thailand or Bali, then welcome!

9. Information in small print for those meeting you. Well, isn't it beauty?

10. Baggage claim area in Terminal 3 (hereinafter referred to as T3).
11. I didn’t shoot T2, because usually after a flight I don’t have the strength to take the camera out and put it back after going through customs. But if anyone is interested, I can take a photo next week.

12. Singapore Airlines flight attendants receive luggage along with passengers.

13. A taxi queue of 60 people will clear up in about 10 minutes. There is a special person standing outside who directs passengers to different taxi cars, which approach, load and depart continuously. The average fare to the city center is 25-30SGD.

14. Well, if you are a transit passenger (I haven’t tried it yet), then your stay depends on your next destination. This is T1, T2 or T3.

15. What to do for a few hours?

16. Firstly, you can stupidly sit on a soft spot on numerous parapets, benches, benches, and sofas.

17. Secondly Duty Free. They are everywhere here and in large quantities.

18. I usually bring a T-shirt with local symbols, an unusual cat or magnets for souvenirs. 2 liters of alcohol, as everywhere else.

19. To each his own.

20. If there is enough time before the flight, there is a hotel in the transit zones for those who do not want to get to know the city (in T2 and T3 you can take sightseeing tour of Singapore).

21. Spend time benefiting your body: gym, shower, massage, hairdresser (in each terminal), cinema.

22. By the way, to clarify the location of yourself and recreation areas, use the free guides posted everywhere.

23. And also free 15-minute Internet. I had a local SIM card, I didn’t try it, but I guess that you need to enter either an e-mail or a phone number to activate. There are over 500 hotspots in Changi!

24. The coolest thing at the airport is to lie by the pool. Entrance $14.

25. Just be careful - the pool is closed for modernization in the winter. It will open on March 1, I hope it will be bigger and tastier.

26. Views of the platform from here. T1, 3rd level. Somewhere on this same level there is a cactus garden, I didn’t get to it.

27. Or a jacuzzi for example.

28. Don't want to get wet? A sunflower meadow with large ashtrays is at your service. T2, 3rd level.

29. And with objects for spotting. Somewhere nearby in T

30. In T2, on the second level in the departure transit area, there is a gorgeous orchid garden and a pond with orange carp.

31. During their stay here, the carps ate to unimaginable sizes. Each fisherman weighs about five kilograms!
