I have always been interested in learning how this world works. That's why I went to the chemistry department. This is why I travel. Cambodia is the #26 country I've visited. After Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, I wanted to move to the capital of the country - Phnom Penh. The fastest way to get there from Siem Reap is by bus. And the cheapest, by the way. But we are not looking for easy ways! :) My card from the hotel included an excursion to the floating village for 18 bucks. The bus costs 12 bucks. Why not take a boat ride to Phnom Penh for 36 bucks? And see the villages and have a new experience. And yes, the path lay ahead along the largest freshwater lake in Asia - Tonle Sap. No sooner said than done. The evening before, I bought tickets at the travel agency next to the hotel. They promised to pick me up from the hotel at 6:10-6:30. Asians are mega-punctual, this is not Cambodia. As a result, we set off towards the port at 6:45. It is located 19 kilometers from Siem Reap. We got there in 30 minutes. They saw the boat and gasped.
And in this vessel we will spend the best 6 hours (as we were promised) of time? How so? But Asia teaches us to take everything for granted. What's the point in resisting? If this happened, then it could not have happened. We started only an hour later at 8:15. At first the path ran along the river. And we thought, why is this biggest lake so small? Has it dried out?
It really decreases at this time of year. But despite this, it occupies 215 square kilometers. We entered the lake as if into the open sea. And then the fun began...
I didn’t even think that it was possible to build an entire village on the water. Floating shops, houses, even their church is floating with a cross.
And it seemed to me (or not) that there were solar panels on the roof of the temple. This is something amazing!
Then, of course, we saw several such “villages” on our way. After the village, we accelerated the cruising speed of our vessel and... the flood began :) I didn’t think that the cry “Water” would scare me so much! True, I have never been on the open sea... The fact is that our Khmers, the owners of the boat, considered red cloth to be the best protection from the water of the sacred Tonle Sap lake.
Yes, of course, we didn’t scoop up water, but it was very unpleasant to be stuck in a boat that was flooded with water from all sides, albeit not so much, but still... Later, many realized that we had a roof!
Better the scorching Cambodian sun than the dirty water of Tonle Sap Lake. But it wasn't all bad. We still moved towards our goal, the city of Phnom Penh.
At some point our engine stopped. This was not fun at all. The shores are not visible. Other boats too. What's happening? Where to run? Even life jackets, which are usually lying around in plain sight, were not observed on this boat. But the cheerful Cambodian fixed everything and we moved on. I suspect it just ran out of fuel. But this idea came much later...
By the way, there was a toilet on board, oddly enough. True, it was impossible to stand up there at full height, even for me. But I think the women appreciated it... A few hours later we reached some shores.
Judging by the map I had downloaded on my phone, this was a river delta or source. Moreover, it is also called Tonle Sap.
After 5 hours we started stopping again. But here the shores were already close and everything was quite calm. It turned out that we had reached some kind of transit point, it seems Krong Kampong. But they didn’t land on the shore, but simply moved to another, more comfortable vessel.
At that moment I stopped regretting the money spent. But looking at the map and estimating the distance, I realized that we would not be in Phnom Penh by one o’clock, as they had promised me, nor by two o’clock, as they had promised our other comrades in misfortune. As we later found out from the captain of the ship, there were still 3 hours of travel along the river. But then I climbed onto the bow of the boat and thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
A Khmer pulled up with free water and then brought a French baguette and life became even better. It’s good that in the morning before sailing, I ate a baguette with processed cheese and two bananas, bought from a girl on the pier (it all cost a buck). In addition, I had half a kilo of jackfruit, which I had wisely purchased the day before in Siem Reap. But I didn’t expect that instead of the required 6 hours, the trip would last 9.
Next he bought a can of cola for a buck and began to philosophize on the bow of the boat until it got too hot.
With a book on the phone, time did not pass as slowly as the boat sailed. In addition, from time to time, clay banks with small-growing bushes and sparse trees were replaced by floating villages:
Sometimes we came across islands of plants growing right in the middle of the river. It was fun to watch on the bow of the ship as our “icebreaker” shamelessly rammed them and crushed them into small pieces with its propeller:
The Tonle Sap River is more crowded than the lake of the same name. On our way we came across more and more villages on the water and boats with fishermen from the surrounding area.
I have no idea what can be caught in such a dirty river, but judging by the experience of the Chao Phraya River, there is probably something interesting here, especially in the vicinity of Phnom Penh.
