Beach umbrella on the plane. Can I bring an umbrella? Is it possible to take an umbrella in hand luggage?

The first thing you need to take care of is to purchase a transport container - a durable hard case for an umbrella, preferably not in the form of a tube, otherwise transporting it along luggage belts will be problematic. Transport capacity is important because, for example, if an umbrella is not allowed to be carried in the aircraft cabin, then it will be offered to be sent to the luggage compartment only in packaged form. In this case, no matter how the umbrella travels - together with the passenger in the cabin, or separately from him, in the luggage compartment, it will remain intact. In addition, when registering it, there will be fewer questions.

Hand luggage

So, if there is a need to travel with a beach umbrella, it would be a good idea to contact the airline, or at least read the baggage and carry-on rules. For example, some companies are quite free to accept an umbrella as carry-on luggage, even if it exceeds the norm, but you should still not rely on this. The standard dimensions of hand luggage are 55 x 40 x 20 cm; most companies adhere to these standards - Aeroflot, Air Berlin, German Wings, Ryanair, Scandinavian Airlines, Thomas Cook, Transaero, Volotea, Vueling. Some companies allow hand luggage dimensions of 56 x 45 x 25 cm, such as British Airways or Jet 2. Others, on the contrary, set smaller dimensions, such as Easyjet - 50 x 40 x 20 cm.

Then you need to pay attention to what allowable weight the airline offers for carriage as part of hand luggage. As a rule, it varies from 8 to 23 kg. Some companies like Easyjet or Iberia do not set weight restrictions.

Even if the folded and packed beach umbrella is the right size to be carried in hand luggage, it is worth remembering that you can only carry one of it. All other items will go in your regular checked baggage. That is, you won’t be able to take any other bag with you, even a small bag with documents and wallets. You will either have to stuff it all into your pockets, or, if the person is not traveling alone, hand it to your companion. This applies mainly to passengers traveling in economy class, for holders of Premium and Business class tickets; almost any airline allows the carriage of several bags in hand luggage.

Checked baggage

Some beach umbrellas can be sent as free checked baggage. Most large companies, such as Aeroflot, Americanairlines, Lufthansa, Airfrance, set the dimensions for this at 158 cm (this should be the sum of three dimensions - width, height, and length of the suitcase). In addition, luggage must not exceed 23 kg. Some airlines, such as VIM-Avia, allow suitcases and bags whose size does not exceed 203 cm (the sum of three dimensions) to be carried as free baggage. Most rules suggest that economy class passengers can carry no more than one suitcase of checked baggage, while Premium and Business class passengers are given two and sometimes three pieces of checked baggage.

Non-standard or oversized luggage

However, most travelers are faced with the fact that a beach umbrella does not fit in hand luggage and cannot fit in checked luggage. In this case, most airlines may offer to place it in custom or oversized baggage. This usually includes sports equipment, musical instruments, various fishing equipment, baby strollers, animals, and, in general, those things that cannot be moved in a regular luggage compartment. This service may well be paid, but not always. For example, many airlines offer advance reservations for free oversized luggage. As a rule, the maximum permissible dimensions for it are about 300 cm (the sum of three dimensions). If

In 2017, new rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane were released. We advise you to carefully read the list of what you can take in hand luggage and what not if you are going on an air trip. Unfortunately, ignorance of such subtleties can ruin your holiday.

1. Food

You can bring any food on board the plane, with the exception of liquid and jelly-like food. You can take with you:

  • nuts;
  • cookie;
  • fruits;
  • sandwiches;
  • chips, etc.

You can take baby food for your child. But refrain from yoghurts, juices, jellies and similar products, otherwise they will be confiscated from you. Canned food and food in jars will also be taken away. It is better to pack all permitted products in transparent bags. This will significantly speed up the inspection.

It is important to take into account the specifics of the carrier and the airport. So, at the Paris airport. Charles de Gaulle was prohibited from carrying cheese in hand luggage.

You can also take Duty Free products with you. The main thing is that the store packaging remains undamaged (the seller must pack the goods in a special bag with a capacity of 2 liters). In addition, keep the receipt - it may be required when going through control.

2. Medicines

The following medications can be carried on board the aircraft:

  • pills;
  • various drops;
  • dressings;
  • hydrogen peroxide.

It is better if the medicines are in undamaged original packaging, with instructions for use. Otherwise, when boarding, customs officers may suspect whether you are carrying prohibited substances under the guise of analgin.

If you have an injury, you may want to add crutches or other orthopedic aids to your carry-on luggage.

According to the rules, the volume of liquid in hand luggage should not exceed 100 ml. Therefore, if the medicine is liquid or in spray form, make sure that the volume does not exceed the permitted amount. You cannot take syringes on board.

3. Digital technology

What technical devices you can take on board are determined by the safety regulations of the country you are traveling to. Usually you are allowed to take in hand luggage:

  • laptop;
  • tablet;
  • mobile phone;
  • Mp3 player;
  • camera;
  • electric razor and toothbrush;
  • charging for devices;
  • bulk electrical appliances (for example, hair dryer).

You can (and should) also take headphones on board. If you are going to listen to music or watch a movie on your laptop, it is unlikely that other passengers will be happy to share this pleasure with you.

Although it is not prohibited to take a mobile phone with you, you may not need it during the flight. Often before takeoff, you are asked to turn off your phones altogether, because they can interfere with the operation of the aircraft’s electronic systems.

If you are going to take bulky equipment with you, remember the regulations. Typically, the length of items in hand luggage should be no more than 56 cm, height - 45 cm, width - 25 cm. The maximum weight varies between 3-15 kilograms. The exact figure depends on the airport.

4. Documents, valuables and jewelry

In addition, you should take in your hand luggage:

  • expensive jewelry;
  • documentation;
  • valuables;
  • Wallet with money.

It’s better to take your passport and other important papers with you - it’s calmer, you won’t have to worry about their safety the whole way. Moreover, if your luggage is suddenly lost, you will not be left in a foreign country without documents.

5. Cosmetics

You can bring any dry cosmetics on board:

  • shadows;
  • mascara;
  • eye and lip pencils;
  • blush;
  • powder, etc.

Liquids, jelly-like substances in cans and bottles with a volume of more than 100 ml are strictly prohibited from being transported on board an aircraft in hand luggage. Pack them in your luggage, otherwise you risk being left without your expensive jars.

You can't carry pressurized cans on an airplane either. Therefore, you will have to get rid of shaving foam and deodorants.

Remember that usually the total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 liter. Therefore, if you also take water with you in addition to lotion and shampoo, and their total volume exceeds the permissible limit, think about what will be more important to you on board.

6. Personal hygiene items

Personal hygiene items you can take in hand luggage:

  • a toothbrush and toothpaste (although the latter needs to be clarified - at some airports it is prohibited to take toothpaste with you);
  • wet wipes;
  • Shaver;
  • a comb without a sharp handle (sometimes it is prohibited to carry metal combs);
  • nail polish remover without acetone with a volume of no more than 100 ml.

7. Clothes

You can take with you to the salon:

  • jacket or sweater;
  • coat;
  • plaid;
  • shawl.

Additionally, you can bring a handbag, an umbrella and a cane.

8. Other

If you are traveling with children, in addition to hand luggage, you can take a baby carrycot or stroller on board. It is not forbidden to take newspapers, magazines and other printed publications with you (without fanaticism, of course).

  • weapons and everything that looks like them (if you have a fashionable accessory in the shape of a grenade or pistol, they can be taken away);
  • piercing and cutting objects (this includes everything, even something that you would not think of using as a weapon to cause pain to another person, for example, knitting needles);
  • animals;
  • gas cartridges;
  • toxic substances.

A full list of prohibited items is often indicated directly on the ticket. If this list is not there, ask about this question right at the airport.

Check the size rules, they vary for each airline. Low-cost airlines take this issue especially seriously. Budget airlines have a strict rule: one person - one piece of hand luggage. Therefore, everything will have to be put in one bag or package. An exception is allowed only for folding strollers, crutches and outerwear.

We all love to travel and travel to different countries, go to the seaside or just take a break from everyday work. Everyone chooses the method of transportation that is more convenient for them - some travel by car, some by train, and some by plane. If in a car we put things in the trunk, and on a train we throw them on an empty shelf, then what to do with luggage on airplanes?

Well, the suitcases are immediately sent to the luggage compartment, and passengers take with them small bags that will contain everything they need, according to their owners. But what to do if you need something else besides this “necessary”. For example... an umbrella.

You are going to go to the sunny city of Sochi, but on the eve of the trip you learned that during your arrival, there will be terrible rain and hail in this city.

And putting an umbrella in a suitcase means giving yourself a completely unsunny walk in the rain (because removing the cover or film from a suitcase is a very problematic task at the airport). The question immediately arises: is it possible to carry an umbrella in hand luggage? It's definitely possible. But not all umbrellas will “travel” with you.

If you took a regular folding one (as indicated in the picture),

Regular folding umbrella

or small, compact, then you don’t have to worry, they will let you onto the plane with a smile.

But if you wanted to take an umbrella-cane or a beach umbrella with you on the plane (anything can happen), then you will have problems that no one needs.

Umbrella cane

Think for yourself: these long umbrellas with sharp ends will disturb both you and other passengers in the cabin. It is unlikely that they will let you board the plane with these umbrellas. But you can still consult with the manager of the company that serves you and clarify this point.

An excellent alternative to an umbrella is a raincoat. It will protect you from the rain better than an umbrella, will not take up much space, and you will be absolutely sure that you will be allowed on the plane with it!

1:502 1:507

Passengers on regular air flights sometimes often wonder whether What can you take with you on a plane? Indeed, despite the fact that you can’t fit a lot of things in your hand luggage, there are also a number of restrictions on their transportation, and therefore you shouldn’t be surprised if, without familiarizing yourself with these rules, you will be temporarily detained when further boarding the plane.

  2. It is not forbidden to take it on a plane portable electronics, in particular mobile phone, laptop, tablet, media player etc. However, there is one very important caveat - if you take them with you as hand luggage, you will have to follow certain rules, for example, when asked to turn off your device, you are obliged to do this in order to ensure overall safety.
  3. To feel more comfortable, you can take with you extra clothes, for example a jacket, light shoes, etc.
  4. If necessary, the passenger can also safely carry along with hand luggage and printed publications: newspapers, magazines, books, etc., however, there is a caveat here too - all these things should not have state material and moral value, that is, you cannot take a rare book with you on board without registering it first.
  5. If you are flying with a child, you are allowed to bring them on board. baby food, as well as hygiene items.

However, in addition to what you can take with you on a plane, there are also a number of things that you cannot take as hand luggage.

Guide: baggage and hand luggage allowances for 10 popular airlines

Air carriers, in particular low-cost airlines, continually tighten requirements for hand luggage and baggage, forcing passengers to pay more. So that you don’t get lost in the stream of constant rules updates, we have collected in one material the rules of ten popular airlines, knowledge of which will allow you to save tens, or even hundreds of euros.

Important nuances

  1. Review the policies of each airline you'll be traveling with and make sure your carry-on and baggage comply with the stricter regulations.
  2. Please note that you can buy tickets from and fly from. This happens when a code sharing agreement is signed between companies. In this case, the rules of the airline whose code is indicated on the ticket apply. It is useless to prove at the airport that you did not know - you will have to pay for excess weight or additional baggage space.
  3. Many airlines check the dimensions of hand luggage using special devices at the airport. Everything that doesn’t fit in the frame will have to be checked in as luggage (particularly zealous ones will take into account even handles that stick out half a centimeter). We recommend that you check your hand luggage in advance - luggage at the check-in counter is cheaper than at the gate; it’s even better to foresee this situation when purchasing air tickets online.
  4. Important! Low-cost airlines do not have connecting flights. Each route segment is a separate flight, so each time you need to pick up your luggage and check it in again, therefore, you also need to pay extra for it on each segment.

Liquids in hand luggage. Is it possible or not?

In total, you are allowed to carry 1 liter of liquids in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters each. The volume of the container matters: a two-liter bottle with two sips of juice left in it will not be allowed through. All liquids must be placed in a clear zip-lock bag (such as a Ziploc bag for freezing fruit or a makeup bag) and presented for security screening if you are asked to do so.

Liquids include:

  • roll-on deodorants;
  • shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel;
  • toothpaste;
  • perfumes and eau de toilette;
  • toner, makeup remover, cream, mascara;
  • alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks;
  • medications: eye, nasal and ear drops, solutions and tinctures for oral administration, products for external use, gels;
  • some food products: soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey, etc.
  • Travelers with children under two years of age. Food for the child (mashed potatoes, milk, juices, formula, etc.) can be in packages of any size in the quantity required for the duration of the flight.
  • Those who need to take medications regularly. In this case, you can take medications with you in packages larger than 100 milliliters, but do not forget to bring a certificate from your doctor.

What about duty free purchases?

Perfume, eau de toilette, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from duty-free shops can be taken on board if they are packaged with the receipt and sealed (do not try to drink whiskey from your throat on the plane).

Difficulties may arise if you are flying with a transfer. Thus, it is prohibited to import liquids into the EU in containers whose volume exceeds 100 milliliters if they were purchased outside the EU. That is, if you are flying from Kharkov to Prague via Warsaw, at the transfer point a bottle of wine from Ukrainian duty free will most likely be confiscated. For those traveling within the EU, it is enough not to print the package and have a receipt with you confirming that the purchase was made no more than a day ago. In any case, the last word remains with the airport employee.

Is it possible to carry food in hand luggage?

Yes, but if they are liquid, they will need to be packaged in 100 milliliters and packaged in accordance with the rules. Feel free to bring cookies, chocolate, apples, nuts or sandwiches on board, but make sure that your food does not emit any strong odors.

Can I take electronic devices on a plane?

Need to! You've seen how they handle suitcases at airports, right?

In hand luggage you are allowed to carry:

  • laptops;
  • Cell phones;
  • tablets and e-readers;
  • e-Sigs;
  • cameras;
  • hair dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners;
  • electric shavers;
  • electric toothbrushes;
  • power banks.

What is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage?

In short, anything that is potentially dangerous to passengers and crew members due to its toxicity or can be used for attack.

  • liquids in containers with a volume of more than 100 milliliters (except for those purchased at duty free and properly packaged);
  • aerosols (hairspray, deodorant, mosquito repellent, etc.);
  • piercing and cutting objects: screwdrivers, drills, nails, corkscrew, sewing needles, blades, all types of knives, scissors, nail files, tweezers with sharp ends, knitting needles, etc. There are exceptions: sometimes you are allowed to carry a knife with a blade shorter than 6 centimeters or tweezers with rounded edges; if you have a doctor’s certificate, you can take injection syringes with you. But you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: if the item is dear to you, check it in your luggage or leave it at home.
  • firearms and any imitations thereof (lighters, children's toys);
  • adhesive tape, electrical tape;
  • explosives and flammable substances: gunpowder, firecrackers, fireworks, lighter fluid, etc.;
  • mercury thermometers (in some countries this restriction does not apply, but it is better to buy an electronic one and not worry);
  • skates, ski and trekking poles;
  • stun guns;
  • caustic and toxic substances: acids, alkalis, poisons;
  • bats, hockey sticks, clubs, nunchucks, oars, skateboards, fishing rods;
  • gas and petrol lighters.

Is it possible to carry animals on board?

Each airline has its own rules, so it is better to find out about them in advance. For example, UIA allows only dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kilograms to be transported in the cabin along with the container. Larger animals are transported in the luggage compartment. Service animals (for example, guide dogs) fly for free; for other pets you will have to pay at a special rate. The owner must have a medical certificate, documents confirming vaccination and an export permit.

How to transport musical instruments and sports equipment?

Sports equipment is usually transported in checked baggage or as oversized cargo at a special rate (if we are talking about skis or snowboards, for example). Even skateboards or tennis rackets will not be allowed on board, as theoretically they could be used as weapons.

Some airlines allow you to take small musical instruments that do not exceed the allowable size of hand luggage (flute, violin) into the cabin. Everything else will have to be checked in as luggage.

How to pack hand luggage correctly and what to do if it is overweight?

  • Place anything that will most likely have to be taken out at security control (laptop and other powerful equipment, a bag of liquids) on top so that you can quickly remove it later. Your neighbors and airport employees will be grateful to you.
  • Liquids should be packaged in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters, remember? If what you want to take with you is not sold in mini-packs, pour it - the bubbles do not have to be “original”.
  • If you are bringing medications with you, it is better that they are in original packaging with instructions inside. If you have sleeping pills, strong painkillers, psychotropic or injectable drugs, do not forget to take a prescription from your doctor with you.
  • Place everything valuable in your hand luggage: documents, money, jewelry, equipment. And don't forget to watch your backpack at the airport, of course.
  • You should always take with you a power bank, warm clothes, medications that you regularly take, and a light snack in case your flight is delayed.
  • Make sure you don't accidentally put anything on the list of prohibited items. The author of these lines, for example, once threw some tape into her backpack, and then blushed and made excuses in front of the vigilant employees of the Kutaisi airport.
  • If you are flying with a low-cost airline, do not fill your backpack to the limit. By leaving an empty space inside, you can compact it a little and fit it into a frame with which you can check the dimensions.
  • Weigh your assembled backpack or suitcase at home and make sure it meets airline standards. If the excess is discovered already at the airport, you can put on some of the clothes packed in your hand luggage, put heavy small items in your pockets, or pick up a camera, an e-book, etc., if the carrier allows this.
