Forte dos Reis Magos
Every day, 08-16. The Star Fortress is Natal's oldest and most important historical structure. It was built in 1598 to protect the coast from French pirates and was perhaps Brazil's most important security barrier during the colonial period. As in much of Brazil, on Natal's city beaches you can use chairs and tables belonging to the stalls. They may be free if you buy something from the kiosks, or they may charge you a small fee (around R$5). This can be agreed upon on the spot.
Ponta Negra Beach is a favorite beach of tourists and the wealthiest locals. Excellent water quality and infrastructure, with many restaurants and shops right on the shoreline. The beach area includes Morro do Cares, Natal's tallest sand dune and one of the city's most famous landmarks.
Via Costeira, (you can get there from the motorway of the same name or by walking from Ponta Negra beach). Praia dos Artistas is a beach in the Eastern region. Once a glamorous beach, it is now most popular among locals. Despite this, it contains a decent tourist infrastructure, including hotels, bars and restaurants. Suitable for accommodation if you want to stay closer to the Historical Center.
Praia do Mayo is adjacent to Praia dos Artistas and therefore has the same features.

Safety. What to watch out for
Natal used to be the safest capital of Brazil, but recent statistics have shown that this is unfortunately no longer the case. Also, be prepared to be harassed by taxi drivers trying to offer you a ride, homeless people wandering around, or staggering drunks bumping into you.

- Rent a buggy with driver and travel along the coast, north and south. The state's Rio Grande do Norte coast provides a rare combination of dunes, lagoons, sandstone cliffs and intervening vegetation. A typical full-day buggy trip costs about R$360.
