Is it possible to take a hair dryer in hand luggage on a plane? What can and cannot be taken on a plane? Curling iron in hand luggage

Firstly, it’s worth figuring out why we don’t check them in as luggage. For me there are several reasons. Let's say if I'm flying and my ticket price doesn't include luggage. Then, whatever one may say, I have to carry the iron in my hand luggage.

Or I return from the country and bring souvenirs and fruits with me, and thus I need to reduce the weight of the suitcase so as not to pay extra. Not everyone likes extra spending, including me. This method helps to avoid excess baggage.

Secondly, you can always check with the air carrier for information about the carriage of prohibited items. By calling the hotline, you can find out what is best to check in as luggage.

I have already flown with a hair straightener in my carry-on baggage several times, so I can say that it does not fall into the category of prohibited items. Hair curling irons are also not prohibited. Just be prepared that at customs you may be asked what you have there. While flying abroad, I learned the names of these devices in English, and then questions definitely didn’t arise.

Therefore, if you still need to carry an iron or curling iron in your hand luggage, then feel free to take it with you. The transportation ban does not apply in this case. However, styling products may be confiscated if the volume exceeds 100 ml. In this case, it is worth purchasing compact versions of your favorite product, or purchasing it in the country of arrival.

Guide: baggage and hand luggage allowances for 10 popular airlines

Air carriers, in particular low-cost airlines, continually tighten requirements for hand luggage and baggage, forcing passengers to pay more. So that you don’t get lost in the stream of constant rules updates, we have collected in one material the rules of ten popular airlines, knowledge of which will allow you to save tens, or even hundreds of euros.

Important nuances

  1. Review the policies of each airline you'll be traveling with and make sure your carry-on and baggage comply with the stricter regulations.
  2. Please note that you can buy tickets from and fly from. This happens when a code sharing agreement is signed between companies. In this case, the rules of the airline whose code is indicated on the ticket apply. It is useless to prove at the airport that you did not know - you will have to pay for excess weight or additional baggage space.
  3. Many airlines check the dimensions of hand luggage using special devices at the airport. Everything that doesn’t fit in the frame will have to be checked in as luggage (particularly zealous ones will take into account even handles that stick out half a centimeter). We recommend that you check your hand luggage in advance - luggage at the check-in counter is cheaper than at the gate; it’s even better to foresee this situation when purchasing air tickets online.
  4. Important! Low-cost airlines do not have connecting flights. Each route segment is a separate flight, so each time you need to pick up your luggage and check it in again, therefore, you also need to pay extra for it on each segment.

Liquids in hand luggage. Is it possible or not?

In total, you are allowed to carry 1 liter of liquids in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters each. The volume of the container matters: a two-liter bottle with two sips of juice left in it will not be allowed through. All liquids must be placed in a clear zip-lock bag (such as a Ziploc bag for freezing fruit or a makeup bag) and presented for security screening if you are asked to do so.

Liquids include:

  • roll-on deodorants;
  • shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel;
  • toothpaste;
  • perfumes and Eau de Toilette;
  • toner, makeup remover, cream, mascara;
  • alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks;
  • medications: eye, nasal and ear drops, solutions and tinctures for oral administration, products for external use, gels;
  • some food products: soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey, etc.
  • Travelers with children under two years of age. Food for the child (mashed potatoes, milk, juices, formula, etc.) can be in packages of any size in the quantity required for the duration of the flight.
  • Those who need to take medications regularly. In this case, you can take medications with you in packages larger than 100 milliliters, but do not forget to bring a certificate from your doctor.

What about duty free purchases?

Perfume, eau de toilette, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from duty-free shops can be taken on board if they are packaged with the receipt and sealed (do not try to drink whiskey from your throat on the plane).

Difficulties may arise if you are flying with a transfer. Thus, it is prohibited to import liquids into the EU in containers whose volume exceeds 100 milliliters if they were purchased outside the EU. That is, if you are flying from Kharkov to Prague via Warsaw, at the transfer point a bottle of wine from Ukrainian duty free will most likely be confiscated. For those traveling within the EU, it is enough not to print the package and have a receipt with you confirming that the purchase was made no more than a day ago. In any case, the last word remains with the airport employee.

Is it possible to carry food in hand luggage?

Yes, but if they are liquid, they will need to be packaged in 100 milliliters and packaged in accordance with the rules. Feel free to bring cookies, chocolate, apples, nuts or sandwiches on board, but make sure that your food does not emit any strong odors.

Can I take electronic devices on a plane?

Need to! You've seen how they handle suitcases at airports, right?

In hand luggage you are allowed to carry:

  • laptops;
  • Cell phones;
  • tablets and e-readers;
  • e-Sigs;
  • cameras;
  • hair dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners;
  • electric shavers;
  • electric toothbrushes;
  • power banks.

What is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage?

In short, anything that is potentially dangerous to passengers and crew members due to its toxicity or can be used for attack.

  • liquids in containers with a volume of more than 100 milliliters (except for those purchased at duty free and properly packaged);
  • aerosols (hairspray, deodorant, mosquito repellent, etc.);
  • piercing and cutting objects: screwdrivers, drills, nails, corkscrew, sewing needles, blades, all types of knives, scissors, nail files, tweezers with sharp ends, knitting needles, etc. There are exceptions: sometimes you are allowed to carry a knife with a blade shorter than 6 centimeters or tweezers with rounded edges; if you have a doctor’s certificate, you can take injection syringes with you. But you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: if the item is dear to you, check it in your luggage or leave it at home.
  • firearms and any imitations thereof (lighters, children's toys);
  • adhesive tape, electrical tape;
  • explosives and flammable substances: gunpowder, firecrackers, fireworks, lighter fluid, etc.;
  • mercury thermometers (in some countries this restriction does not apply, but it is better to buy an electronic one and not worry);
  • skates, ski and trekking poles;
  • stun guns;
  • caustic and toxic substances: acids, alkalis, poisons;
  • bats, hockey sticks, clubs, nunchucks, oars, skateboards, fishing rods;
  • gas and petrol lighters.

Is it possible to carry animals on board?

Each airline has its own rules, so it is better to find out about them in advance. For example, UIA allows only dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kilograms to be transported in the cabin along with the container. Larger animals are transported in the luggage compartment. Service animals (for example, guide dogs) fly for free; for other pets you will have to pay at a special rate. The owner must have a medical certificate, documents confirming vaccination and an export permit.

How to transport musical instruments and sports equipment?

Sports equipment is usually transported in checked baggage or as oversized cargo at a special rate (if we are talking about skis or snowboards, for example). Even skateboards or tennis rackets will not be allowed on board, as theoretically they could be used as weapons.

Little ones musical instruments, which do not exceed the permissible size of hand luggage (flute, violin), some airlines allow you to take with you into the cabin. Everything else will have to be checked in as luggage.

How to pack hand luggage correctly and what to do if it is overweight?

  • Place anything that will most likely have to be taken out at security control (laptop and other powerful equipment, a bag of liquids) on top so that you can quickly remove it later. Your neighbors and airport employees will be grateful to you.
  • Liquids should be packaged in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters, remember? If what you want to take with you is not sold in mini-packs, pour it - the bubbles do not have to be “original”.
  • If you are bringing medications with you, it is better that they are in original packaging with instructions inside. If you have sleeping pills, strong painkillers, psychotropic or injectable drugs, do not forget to take a prescription from your doctor with you.
  • Place everything valuable in your hand luggage: documents, money, jewelry, equipment. And don't forget to watch your backpack at the airport, of course.
  • You should always take with you a power bank, warm clothes, medications that you regularly take, and a light snack in case your flight is delayed.
  • Make sure you don't accidentally put anything on the list of prohibited items. The author of these lines, for example, once threw some tape into her backpack, and then blushed and made excuses in front of the vigilant employees of the Kutaisi airport.
  • If you are flying with a low-cost airline, do not fill your backpack to the limit. By leaving an empty space inside, you can compact it a little and fit it into a frame with which you can check the dimensions.
  • Weigh your assembled backpack or suitcase at home and make sure it meets airline standards. If the excess is discovered already at the airport, you can put on some of the clothes packed in your hand luggage, put heavy small items in your pockets, or pick up a camera, an e-book, etc., if the carrier allows this.

Every year, many airlines tighten the rules for transporting luggage and things that travelers will need. Of course, every tourist wants to take on board the plane all the essentials that will be useful on vacation. But to do this, you need to know the basic rules for carrying luggage through security control so as not to run into problems and troubles. Therefore, it is necessary to know in advance what better way carry out the necessary things .

Many tourists ask the question: “Is it possible to take a hairdryer in hand luggage on a plane?” Let us remind you that there are several ways to transport things on an airplane.

Ways to transport things on an airplane

  1. Checking in luggage. This is the best option for transporting sharp and cutting objects, medicines, gels, aerosols, cosmetics and personal care products, as well as electrical appliances, such as a hair dryer. The traveler will not be detained at the control point. However, there is a risk of damaging items, so we recommend wrapping them in a soft cloth;
  2. Hand luggage. You can take the most necessary items, including a hairdryer, in your hand luggage. However, airport staff will carefully check items transported in this manner. Therefore it will take a large number of time, which causes inconvenience for the traveler.

As noted earlier, there are two ways to transport items.

In order not to spend a long time at the checkpoint and to avoid problems with transporting electrical appliances, including a hair dryer, especially if it is large, we advise you to check it in your luggage. This will prevent checkpoint delays. If the hairdryer is small, you can take it in your hand luggage. The airline administration will not have any questions when inspecting your items.

Conclusion

In order not to encounter difficulties in controlling your luggage and necessary things, and, moreover, not to spoil the anticipation of the trip, you need to know and follow the basic rules for transporting things. We guarantee this to you, the beginning have a nice rest and have a nice flight. Don't forget that airlines care, first of all, about your safety!

In chapter Holidays abroad to the question: Can I take a hairdryer and curling iron in hand luggage on a plane? given by the author Yollina the best answer is No problem. Take it, I carried it too.

Answer from 2 answers[guru]

Hello! Here is a selection of topics with answers to your question: Is it possible to take a hairdryer and curling iron in hand luggage on a plane?

Answer from Irina Blinova[guru]
And I want to carry it all with me! Pack it so it doesn't break.

Answer from Ina Sterlyadeva[guru]
In hotels, hairdryers have low power and are inconvenient to use, so it is better (if you constantly use a hairdryer) to take your own hairdryer with you. It is better to check a hairdryer and curling iron, even expensive professional ones, in your luggage, between layers of clothing. The fairly hard walls of the suitcase will also provide additional protection. No one will open your luggage (tested by many years of travel) unless you put expensive photo and video equipment or a laptop there. And even then it’s unlikely. Although sometimes luggage can simply be lost (regardless of the contents of the suitcase). And to avoid damage, it is better to carry a camera, camera and laptop in hand luggage. (we always do this ourselves)

Answer from Anastasia Kachan[guru]
Can. but I wouldn't even take it. hotels always have everything

I don’t really understand the point of carrying a hairdryer and curling iron with you on vacation...
But in general, electronic devices can be taken in hand luggage. I would buy cheap hiking options as a last resort.

Passengers often encounter a problem that lies in different airline requirements regarding hand luggage. And if each client knows an approximate list of prohibited items, then any unclear details can ruin the flight. Let's look at the rules for carrying hand luggage using the example of large airlines.

What can you take in hand luggage on a plane?

General requirements for carrying hand luggage are accepted all over the world and usually there are no problems if you follow the rules. Regardless of the rules of each airline, you should always take valuables on board (laptop, phones, money, documents, jewelry), souvenirs and fragile items, all necessary hygiene items and medicines, as well as a book or magazine.

If possible, fragile souvenirs should also be taken with you. It is worth paying attention not only to the information provided on the airlines’ pages, but also to the rules of each airport - they may be supplemented and differ.

As an addition to hand luggage, it is permissible to take a blanket, jacket, or scarf. A child, like an adult, can also take hand luggage on board. If a child is not registered in a separate seat, you can carry one carry-on baggage that contains child care products. You can take 3,000 euros in cash on board - this amount does not require a declaration.

In hand luggage it is not prohibited to take hair straighteners, hair dryers, curling irons, wooden and plastic knitting needles (not iron), cups, plates, glasses and other utensils (but not forks), a small umbrella (if it is not a cane), glass and ceramic nail files for nails, small household appliances (for example, a juicer or a slow cooker).

The import of plants without soil is allowed into the EU countries, the total number is five. You can also import a plant into the USA without soil and with a special certificate.

Read how to transport pets on an airplane in a separate section.

Many people are concerned about the question: is it possible to take a small suitcase or other bag on wheels instead of a bag? Of course, only an airline representative will provide accurate information, but usually the answer is positive if the total size of the bag does not exceed 114 cm.

You can also take fragile luggage with you, even if it exceeds the established sizes and standards. But to do this, you will have to notify the airline in advance and discuss all the details. The passenger must pay for a separate seat, and the weight of such “special” hand luggage is no more than 80 kg. It will have to be placed in the chair and secured tightly with straps. However, it is worth remembering: all responsibility for safety will fall on the shoulders of the passenger.

Lufthansa

The Lufthansa airline has established rules according to which the size of hand luggage must be within the limits of 55x40x23 cm, and the weight must be about 8 kg. Luggage quantity – 1 bag per person. Depending on the class, a child has the right to carry hand luggage in the same way as an adult. Hand luggage that exceeds the permitted dimensions will be carried free of charge in the cargo hold.

In this case, you will have to remove medications, electronics, documents, and jewelry from the bag. Within the EU and on connecting flights in Europe, you can take a limited amount of liquid on board. Cosmetics can be carried in hand luggage if they meet the requirements: the liquid must not exceed the volume (1 liter) and must be packed in a transparent plastic bag (zip-lock). What you can't take in hand luggage on a plane

It is better not to take on board and leave in your suitcase manicure sets (files and scissors), as well as eau de toilette. These items will not be needed during the flight, and during inspection they may all be confiscated.

If the flight is made with a transfer, then when boarding the next flight, everything purchased in duty-free will already be considered hand luggage and, accordingly, will be confiscated if it is not possible to transfer what was purchased into a suitcase.

Without exception, all EU countries prohibit the transport of dairy or meat products. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that eau de toilette in aerosols is prohibited on many airlines. The same applies to medications in aerosol form.

A camera tripod is usually placed in luggage if folded exceeds 60 cm. In this case, it is better to tape it to the suitcase.

Like all European companies, Lufthansa prohibits carrying in hand luggage items that can cause injury, weapons and dummy weapons, as well as items that can be used as weapons, sharp objects (knives, scissors), blunt objects (baseball bat), explosives, toxic and chemical substances, skates, unpacked razors.

Ryanair prohibits taking into hand luggage items that can harm other passengers, perishable foods, toy weapons, and flammable substances.

Aeroflot prohibits the carriage of dangerous objects (knives, weapons, scissors) and unreasonably large quantities of medications in hand luggage.

During flights from Transaero You cannot bring lighters, aerosols, duplicate weapons, razors, knives, or skateboards.

On board S7 It is prohibited to carry knitting needles, corkscrews, and folding knives in hand luggage.

Hand luggage will be carried on the plane without any problems if it does not contain the prohibited items listed above, and also if it passes the size check. When screening hand luggage, it is recommended to present bags with packed liquids separately.

If you plan to bring plants in your hand luggage, it is worth remembering that the import of wild plants, fresh fruits, live plants, plants with soil, nuts, tulip bulbs, and legumes is prohibited. You will have to receive a certificate upon purchase.

Space saving tips: what if you need to take more?

If for some reason a passenger does not fit into the allotted limits, and the hand luggage is too bulky, there are several ways to save space.

1. You can put on a jacket or cardigan with several pockets, distribute some items in them, and then, after climbing on board, take off the item. Pockets can be used wisely to store documents, cameras, and things that need to be easily accessible.

2. Instead of a bulky laptop, it is better to take a tablet. An electronics bag that doesn't count as carry-on luggage can be a compact place to store chargers.

3. Toiletries and perfumes most often do not fit into the required 100 ml and make you nervous, so the easiest way is to buy them after landing or check them in your luggage. We must not forget that even toothpastes, mascara and creams are considered liquids. If funds are expensive, you are unlikely to want to say goodbye to them. But loose shadows, powder and blush are not considered liquid.

4. When choosing a bag, you should pay attention to the presence of internal pockets, which will allow you to use the space of your hand luggage more economically. At the same time, the bag should not be overloaded with unnecessary straps and heavy iron elements.

5. You need to be absolutely ruthless with the things you plan to take on the plane. It is worth reviewing several times and weeding out things that are unnecessary during the flight, putting them in a suitcase or leaving them at home.

6. External straps will help make the bag look more compact. In this case, the risk of additional checks is reduced than if the hand luggage looks too bulky.
