Beaches of Calella
The beautiful Spanish town of Calella is located 50 kilometers from Barcelona and, despite its small territory, is not only a popular tourist center, but also the owner of beautiful beaches. All beaches in Calella have been awarded the Blue Flag certificate for their amenities and cleanliness. The sand on them is quite coarse and has a pleasant golden hue. The length of the coastline is about 3 kilometers, with the exception of the rocky outskirts, all of it is occupied by smooth, beautiful beaches. In the Paseo de las Rocas area there is another beautiful beach - Garbi. City lighthouse
One of the symbols of Calella is the beautiful lighthouse, built in 1859 to prevent pirate attacks. The structure is located on the top of a hill whose height is 50 meters. Work on the construction of the lighthouse began under the direction of engineer Marian Parelada on October 9, 1856. The grand opening of the building took place on December 15, 1859.

The optical device was built in Paris, and under normal conditions its beams reached about 18 miles. In 1916, the lighthouse was electrified. In 1927, the optical device was modernized - a Fresnel lens and a 1000 W lamp were installed, producing light 33 km long.
The last modernization of the building was carried out in 1954. Currently, the lighthouse is operational, its light reaches a distance of 35 miles, and flashes occur 2 - 3 times every 30 seconds. Now the building is closed to the public, it is planned to soon transfer it to the ownership of the City Council, and then it will become available to tourists.
House with cacti
The house with cacti is a three-story corner house with an attic, decorated with live cacti. This house looks very unusual, and without a doubt it is an important landmark of Calella.

A little history
Scientists have established that the first human settlements on the site of modern Calella were already in the 1st century BC. e. The first mention of this small fishing settlement was found in documents dating back to the 12th century. Since the 14th century, according to the Royal decision received by Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera, the construction of houses began here. In the 16th century, the central city square and streets such as Iglesia, Jovar, Mar and Batlle were organized and formed. In the 18th century, the city of Calella (Spain) was famous for the silk and cotton fabrics produced here, and shipbuilding was also developed here. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 led to the decline of both the textile and shipbuilding industries. Calella began to develop as a tourist center only in the second half of the last century.

This bay is somewhat remote and not easy to get to, but during the tourist season there are cozy restaurants and cafes here, and family trips on glass-bottom boats are organized.
Here the sea is an amazing blue color, and the pebbles of the beaches are not ordinary smooth stones, but rather very coarse golden sand. There are countless walking alleys and cozy parks, and no less than a dozen picturesque squares.
And the name of this amazing beauty is Kaleya, although all Russian speakers call it Kalella.
This small ancient town is located just 50 kilometers from the Catalan capital, somewhere halfway between Barcelona and Girona. In fact, it is the main tourist center of the Del Maresme coast.
Beaches
The ancestors of the current residents of the city could not have chosen a more elegant and beautiful place for it: on one side it is surrounded by mountains, on the other by the water surface of the Balearic Sea.
Wide beaches occupy three kilometers of the coastal zone. Each of them is good in its own way, and all have been awarded the blue flag. However, many tourists who have been there recommend the one that is located opposite the lighthouse, in a secluded bay - although it is a bit of a walk from some areas of Calella.
How to choose a hotel
In Calella you will certainly find accommodation to suit your taste: hotels of different categories and apartments in the city can accommodate up to 14,000 guests at a time. And in local bars, restaurants, and pizzerias it’s nice to just sit and enjoy the beneficial atmosphere of relaxation.
When choosing a hotel, you should pay attention to its location. Those hotels that are located on the coast are significantly more expensive, but it is worth keeping in mind that the railway running along the entire coast creates some noise that cannot be compared with the roar that our railway makes. Here the trains are quiet, but they can still wake you up.
Another important point is the railway station and crossings over the rails. If you plan to travel actively, choose a hotel near the station. More budget hotels are located some distance away. If the beach is important, look on Google Maps (below) to see how far the crossing is from you, since you will have to go through it to get to the sea.
Most of the hotel stock is small compact hotels located in old houses.
Story
According to historians, people lived in the place where Calella stands today in the 1st century BC. They were engaged in viticulture, grew wheat and even made olive oil. The name Calella first appeared in documents from the beginning of the 12th century - around then the first fishing huts began to appear in this part of the coast. However, it is believed that the city dates back to 1338 - it was in this year that the king gave permission to Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera to build houses and conduct trade. The part of the city that is today central is gradually being formed - the municipal square and the streets surrounding it. Over time, fortifications appear to protect against pirates, a temple and many other structures are erected.
In the 18th century, handicraft textile enterprises appeared in the city. The economy is developing - especially with the construction of the railway here in 1857. However, the general crisis associated with the civil war did not bypass Calella. However, the town was able to get out of it - and all thanks to tourists who rushed to this pretty place in the 60s of the 20th century. Attractions
The city has several attractions that are definitely worth visiting when you come here on vacation. The most important is considered to be built in the 16th century with a facade in the Baroque style. It was destroyed twice and completely restored, but bas-reliefs from the altar of the very first temple are still preserved.
Right there, in the historical quarter, along the way you will meet ancient mansions - architectural monuments of the city: these are the Casa del Salvador (XIV century) and the Casa Sivilla (XVI century). Don’t forget to visit the lighthouse, built in 1859 – it’s worth a visit just to enjoy the unique views from it.

Unlike neighboring resorts, life here is in full swing until late at night. There are several nightclubs, a huge number of bars, cafes and shops that are open until late in the evening. Finding a place to spend the evening is absolutely no problem.
During the day, the majority of tourists prefer to relax on the beach, and in the afternoon many go on an independent journey along the coast. From Calella you can quickly get (by train or by sea on a pleasure boat) to Blanes, Tossa De Mar and Lloret de Mar, where the main ones are located.
