Pokrovsky stauropegial convent at the Pokrovskaya outpost in Moscow, it was founded in 1635 by Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. According to legend, the reason for the founding of the monastery in honor of the Intercession of the Mother of God was the death of the Tsar’s parent, His Holiness Patriarch Philaret, who died on the Feast of the Intercession in 1633.
The monastery was called “Protection of Poor Houses.” Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich granted 17 quarters of land for the construction of the monastery. Before this, here, on the outskirts of Moscow, there was a cemetery for the burial of the homeless, vagabonds and executed people. The Intercession wooden church existed before the founding of the monastery and was a parish church.
Subsequently, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the monastery was built “at a modest amount and supplied with church utensils and other needs.”
In 1808, a stone monastery cathedral was built on the site of a dilapidated church (1655). The Church in honor of All Saints with a refectory was built in 1792-98. on the site of a dilapidated temple in 1682, in 1854-55. completely rebuilt (architect M.D. Bykovsky) and re-consecrated. A three-tier bell tower was built in 1799, walls and gates were built in 1833-53. From 1680 to 1731 the monastery was assigned to. In 1751-76. The Pokrovsky Monastery housed a theological seminary.
In 1812 the monastery was destroyed. It took several years for the monastery to recover from the damage caused.

By the beginning of the twentieth century. the monastery had two churches - Pokrovsky and Resurrection, four chapels in different parts of Moscow, a stone tented bell tower with eight bells and a fighting clock. The monastery was surrounded by a stone fence; Five quadrangular towers were located at the corners of the fence. Two almshouses were assigned to the monastery, and there was a parochial boarding school for boys.
In 1926, the bell tower was blown up, then the Intercession Church was closed, the chapel and grave monuments were demolished; in 1929 the Resurrection Church was closed. On the site of the cemetery, a park of culture and recreation (Tagansky Park) that still exists today was built. In the buildings of churches and monasteries there were trusts, offices, banks, a gym, and a billiard room.
In 1994, the Holy Synod decided to restore the Intercession Monastery as a monastic monastery for women.
In 1998, the honest remains of the righteous old woman Matrona were transferred from the Danilovsky cemetery in Moscow. In 1999, Blessed Matrona was glorified as a locally revered saint. In 2004, the holy righteous Matrona was canonized as a church saint.

This is a magnificent monastery, not with luxurious architecture, a fairly old building, a little restored, but not everywhere, the inside is also very beautiful, many different altars and icons, many candles and candlesticks.
I had a reason to come here. To the relics of Saint Matryona. I believe that Matryona helps, and I am convinced from my own experience! History of the creation of the Intercession Monastery

Did you know? The cemetery at the monastery was the final resting place of many members of the clergy, as well as nobles and merchants. Patrons of the arts, honorary citizens of Moscow and county towns were buried here. In total, the necropolis numbered about three thousand monuments.
With the arrival of the Bolsheviks, a new black page began in the history of the monastery: they blew up the bell tower, closed the Intercession and Resurrection churches, demolished the chapel, and destroyed the necropolis. A park was opened on the territory of the cemetery, and churches had gyms, banks, and offices.
- The monastery was restored in 1994, and four years later the relics of Saint Matrona were transferred to the Intercession Convent. The blessed one was glorified in 1999 as a locally revered saint, and in 2004 as a universally revered saint.
Architectural and cultural monuments of the monastery
Today there are only two churches in the monastery: the Intercession of the Virgin Mary and the Resurrection Church.
