Impressions from a holiday in September

September Corfu is beautiful! So different, interesting and unusual. Plains, serpentines, mountainous roads and beautiful views!

Vacation with children

If you stay in the south of Corfu (Lefkimmi, Kavos), I am sure that the children will enjoy the pleasant sandy bottom and shallow, well-warmed, calm sea. Children are happy, parents are calm. Those who love the warm sea will also like it.

Youth recreation

If you go out to the town of Kavos itself (the southernmost town of Corfu) at night, you will easily find entertainment to suit your taste. Bowling, discos, billiards, all kinds of cafes and parties, a kind of Ibiza in the Greek version.

Family holiday

On the outskirts of Kavos and in many nearby villages there is peace and quiet in the evening. It’s so nice to have dinner or drink coffee while contemplating the calm sea.

What to take with you on vacation?

At the beginning of September the weather is always warm, even in the evenings. Therefore, we make do with a minimum of things: a few T-shirts, shorts, a pareo, comfortable sandals and a hat - that’s all you need! It's not a good idea to arm yourself with mosquito repellent cream, some evenings there were a lot of them, some evenings there were none at all, which really surprised us.

Where is the best place to stay?

We settled in Agios Petros - this is the outskirts of Kavos, not far from the port of Lefkimmi. There are many nice hotels, apartments and houses for rent in the neighborhood at reasonable prices. It’s a short walk to Kavos, and at the same time it’s quiet at night and the noise of the nightlife doesn’t disturb you.

What to do at the resort?

Since we are quite active people, we explored all the surrounding beaches, tried fishing on the river in the village of Lefkimmi (we caught several loaches, other local fish, which literally swarmed in the river, did not respond to our bait), and walked around Kavos.

I recommend a tour of the Achilleion Palace (built for Elizabeth of Austria in the 18th century). It is located in the strait separating the east coast of Corfu and the mainland, not far from the capital of the island. We received great pleasure from walking through the garden of the palace, looking at many monuments and busts, from beautiful views, from exhibits of historical value. The cost of the excursion is 8 euros for adults, 5 for children. The capital of Corfu, Kerkyra, is located not far from Achilleion; after a tour of the palace, we enjoyed walking through its streets. Narrow streets, beautiful architecture, houses like in the pictures, cobbled streets - all this is so beautiful. One evening for a walk around the capital will definitely not be enough! Be sure to visit the Church of St. Spyridon in Kerkyra - a very beautiful and “strong” place.

The beaches in Corfu are different, there are sandy and pebble and even... consisting of algae. We saw such a coastline near the city of Kavos. It's like a thick pillow of dry seaweed. They are pleasant to the touch, soft and springy. When you walk along such a bank, it seems that you are walking on an orthopedic mattress. At first it was very unusual for us, but we got used to it. Due to the current, algae are washed near the shore into a thick cushion, which simultaneously serves as protection for the coastline and perfectly absorbs the noise of waves in bad weather. We have traveled all over Greece and have never seen anything like this anywhere! Kavos also has a traditional long, wide sandy beach with plenty of room for everyone. There are also various water attractions and entertainment.

What can you buy?

Prices on the island are slightly higher than on the mainland. Not far from Kavos there is a Lidl store, Demeter and other supermarkets. There is everything you need for those who prefer to cook on their own, and for those who want to try local products. Souvenirs cost the same as everywhere else in Greece. Magnets for 1-2 euros, cups, ashtrays, lighters, figurines, handmade olive soap can be purchased for 2-8 euros per item.

About product prices

Olive oil from local factories costs from 7 euros per liter. Handmade soap from 1 euro. Honey is also very tasty and costs from 10 euros per liter jar. Yogurt, feta and other local cheeses cost 2 - 5 euros. Olives in vacuum packaging (200 g) 2-3 euros. For the first time we tried something like olive pate here - a small jar of olives crushed into paste costs 2.5 euros. Freshly baked bread from a local bakery, olive oil, oregano, olives and feta - it's magical and so Greek! Try it, you will like it.

Here you can also buy many people’s favorite pizza for 5-8 euros, all kinds of burgers for 2-5 euros, local Giros for 5 euros. A dinner of salad and grilled fish will cost 20-25 Euros per person. Ice cream for 2 euros per scoop in a waffle cup.

Pros of holidays in Corfu

Nice, calm, warm and gentle sea. Fine, very pleasant to the touch sand. Excellent air and a beautiful panorama of the bay, where many cruise ships, ships and yachts sail. A very calming sight!

Is it worth a holiday in Corfu?

We will definitely return to Corfu, as the island is truly beautiful and quite large!

Impressions from a holiday in June

I chose trips to sunny Greece because I knew for sure that it would be warm there. It cannot be bad in the homeland of the Gods and olives, because the territory of Greece is washed by three seas at once. Therefore, swim wherever you want. The seas and countless islands are not the only feature that attracts tourists. There is practically no bad weather on the island of Corfu. In June, people will like the temperature in Corfu, some people don't like the heat. I also belong to that category of people. Therefore, I don’t tolerate July in hot countries well. But you don’t have to worry, because in Corfu in June it’s + 25-27 ºC. The nights are not hot. And a light breeze only helps you travel to other islands.

Youth recreation

The island of Corfu is suitable for youth holidays. There are restaurants, clubs here, you can rent a yacht or just buy a ticket to attend a party on the water. Young people find a thousand and one ways to have fun. For example, they rent a quad bike (for only $30). On an ATV you can ride through the hills and be in the role of a discoverer (see unexplored places). Mostly, they rent a quad bike to cut through the waves in the sea. You just have to be careful, because no equipment likes water, especially sea water. The ATV may simply stall on the shore. It is impossible to pull him out of the sand without outside help.

Holidays alone

Going to the sea is a good way to retire. Be alone with yourself. For example, that’s what I do. You can have a good rest in Corfu alone. The Greeks are hospitable people, they know how to receive guests. You will never be bored.

What to take with you on vacation?

Greece is the birthplace of healthy food. I didn’t take anything because I decided to leave room in my suitcase to buy various goodies. Useful, of course. If you are going to Corfu, take only beautiful things with you for a stunning photo shoot.

Where is the best place to stay?

Corfu is the birthplace of millionaires. Because during the crisis the authorities decided to sell their islands. Just imagine, an entire island in the middle of the sea costs less than real estate in London. Therefore, renting cottages during the high season is very expensive. I stayed at Quayside Village.

What to do at the resort?

On the island of Corfu, every day brings discoveries. I recommend visiting the olive grove. Firstly, you will see unusual trees there, take a couple of olives, because olives in cans cannot compare with the real product.

There are a lot of excursion programs. I booked myself a tour “Getting to know Greece”. I booked an excursion on the website and made a prepayment. I liked the excursion; I learned an interesting legend that tells the mystery of the origin of the name of the island. It turns out that Poseidon fell in love with a young girl, in a fit of feelings, he hid his beloved from prying eyes. And he disappeared. The name of the island is similar to the name of the girl.

The beaches of Corfu are considered the most beautiful. Locals joke that the island of Corfu is under the thumb of Italy. Therefore, the beaches here are incomparable. Alipa is one of the best. There are white beaches and high cliffs that seem to shield people from bad weather.

Is it worth a holiday in Corfu?

Do you really want to relax? Then pack your bags and fly to Corfu. Have a nice holiday.

Impressions from a holiday in June

I don’t like the heat because it feels like there’s not enough air and I’m about to faint. Therefore, in principle, I do not consider countries with a hot climate for my travel. I found out that Greece has a climate suitable for my body. Especially in June, when the sea has warmed up and the sun is warming. Indeed, in June the weather on the island of Corfu is ideal: the air temperature reaches 25 degrees, there may also be precipitation, but after a short rain the good weather immediately comes. For me, June in Greece is the ideal time for a seaside holiday.

Youth recreation

In Corfu there is entertainment for the category of vacationers who have no rest, they constantly want fun - these are young people. There are many clubs, restaurants and bars on the island. The location is convenient - close to the beach. There are places for a relaxing holiday that offer a view of the sea. Wealthy tourists throw parties for themselves: rent a yacht, order services (food, drinks and other event services). The most budget-friendly and inexpensive place where a budget tourist can relax is the Dreamy Nights nightclub.

What to take with you on vacation?

I try to take a minimum of things with me on vacation. Firstly, I don’t want my husband to feel like a volunteer worker and feel tired. Suddenly the muscles will start to ache and rest will be in jeopardy. Therefore, I recommend that you take the most necessary things with you: clothes, electronics and a tracksuit. Everything else is simply of no use to you. If you feel physically unwell or suffer from chronic diseases, then be sure to take your medications with you. Be careful at customs they may force you to explain what these substances are. It is better to take the tablets in their original packaging to avoid any awkward situations.

Where is the best place to stay?

There are many hotels on the island of Corfu. Elite and economical. You can rent a cottage. In Greece there is a fashion to rent an entire island. It is very expensive, but also very fashionable. It's best to book a hotel in advance. My husband and I stayed at the Saint Nicholas Hotel. This is a three star hotel in traditional Greek style, the rooms are cozy and bright. The territory that belongs to the hotel is landscaped. Flowers grow there and there are several swimming pools.

What to do at the resort?

There is one amazing place in Corfu that tourists cannot miss. Everyone is trying to get there. This is the Love Channel. These are two rocks that form a gorge. According to legend, two lovers once lived here. The gods began to envy the burning feeling and turned people into rocks. Therefore, everyone who wants to find love (or maintain a feeling) must swim through a small bay, then happiness in their personal life will definitely overtake them. The Love Canal is a beautiful place, with clear sea water. Only the Love Canal is located near the city of Sidari.

You can go into a restaurant and order baked zucchini with cheese for only 6 euros.

Pros of holidays in Corfu

I liked the island of Corfu: the service, good weather, delicious food, the opportunity to travel by ship. Also, there are not many people in Corfu in June, so there is a feeling of freedom.

Impressions from a holiday in June

June in Greece is a truly summer and hot month. The weather is always sunny, the sea is warm. It is a pleasure to spend a holiday in Corfu at this time.

Family holiday

The island of Corfu is a great option for a family holiday, especially with young children. Good tourist infrastructure, everywhere clean and tidy. There is a lot of entertainment for the baby and many places where the whole family can go. The climate is mild and comfortable.

What to take with you on vacation?

For a seaside holiday with a child, we always purchase special water slippers. In them you don’t have to be afraid that your baby will injure his leg or step on something sharp at the bottom. The shoes are very comfortable and light, can be used for the pool.

Where is the best place to stay?

We lived in a 4 star hotel. There is a more budget option than a hotel - these are family hotels. The conditions and food are no worse, but you can get more into the local flavor. We really regretted that we did not consider this option when choosing a place to live.

There is one proven way to save a lot on excursions to Corfu. Contact local travel agencies, not host companies targeting the Russian tourist market. Savings can reach up to half the stated price for large well-promoted agencies.

When choosing programs, pay attention to the most interesting options; you should not take sightseeing tours; their route can easily be repeated on your own using public transport or by renting a car.

Corfu is a case where photography matches reality. The beaches are golden sand, clean, the sea is blue and crystal clear. If necessary, you can rent an umbrella and two sun loungers for 8 euros. Along the coast they always sell homemade lemonades, freshly squeezed juices and ice cream. Everything is at hand.

We brought magnets with us from vacation, which are sold at every turn at symbolic prices.

Where can I eat?

Cafe with delicious food, incredible variety. In addition, there are small family cafes at hotels. There you can try real homemade Greek cuisine.

About the quality of food and service

Menus in restaurants are in several languages: English, German and Greek. The waiters are very helpful; they are not too lazy to tell the history of the dish or recommend their signature dish. Almost everywhere the child received compliments from the establishment in the form of desserts or fruits. It's a small thing, but nice.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

Food prices are a separate issue. For 10 euros you can have a hearty meal and a glass of wine at lunch. The portions are very large, easily enough for two adults.

Entertainment

The main attraction in Corfu is its picturesque nature. The entire tourism infrastructure is set up for it. There are many water activities on the beaches, restaurants and cafes with beautiful views, etc. are scattered throughout the island.

Pros of holidays in Corfu

Very affordable prices. It is cheaper to have a family holiday in Greece than in Russian resorts.

The locals are friendly, they love tourists very much, no one tries to scam you out of money, no one imposes their services. If necessary, they are always ready to help, show the way, recommend a restaurant or an interesting place.

Impressions from a holiday in July

Magnificent! Our hotel was based in Acharavi, but I believe that the whole wonderful island of Corfu became our holiday destination, since we rented a car and drove all over the green island - and to nearby Sidari, where the rugged rocks are so beautiful that it is simply breathtaking, and to the grandiose and with its architecture and some special spirit the capital of the island of Kerkyra, and in the fantastic beauty and with some aquamarine color of the sea Paleokastritsa... Moreover, the weather was very favorable for such a vacation, the air was approximately +30+32, and The heat was not particularly felt, because a pleasant breeze was blowing from the sea all the time, and the “sorcerer oaks” of this wonderful island seemed to disperse the heat with their mighty branches. The sea itself warmed up to +25 degrees, swimming was very cool!

Family holiday

I still think that this place is more suitable for a quiet family holiday, since this island is a real miracle in terms of nature and here you can admire and admire the landscapes, sea and vegetation. Although, of course, Sidari with its romantic “Channel of Love” is more for young people, but still Corfu itself is an island of family idyll!

Where is the best place to stay?

We traditionally stay in Acharavi, because this village has a good selection of 4-5 star hotels at very reasonable prices, there are nice, cozy restaurants, there are no special attractions, but Sidari is nearby, where you can get by taxi for 10 euros. And the beaches here are very good...

What to do at the resort?

It’s nice to stroll around Acharavi, go to souvenir shops and cute and cozy restaurants. You can walk for hours in Sidari, watching the waves crash against the rugged rocks. And Kerkyra is a place that opens up in a new way every time, where you can climb the fortresses, wander through the squares, and visit the temples. And we go to the Temple of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu, whose relics are kept in a shrine, and who, according to legend, goes around the island on patrol, so his sandals wear out, every time we come.

An excursion to Kerkyra, for those who have not been on such an excursion, is simply a must-visit! But we had already been, so we went to Kerkyra on our own. But we went on an excursion to Paleokastritsa. what can I say? Pure delight! The sea is simply fantastic in color, especially visible from the observation deck and from the top of the Teotoku monastery, located above Paleokastritsa. Here is the Adriatic Sea, but how beautiful it is! For 15 euros, we went by boat to various picturesque grottoes and saw secluded pebble beaches. The only drawback of this place is that the water is a little cold compared to Acharavi.

During the 10 days we were on the island, it rained twice, all other days were sunny. I would like to note that in September the air temperature during the day and at night is very different; during the day it can be +30 degrees and at night +12 degrees. Therefore, you will definitely need warm clothes.

Where is the best place to stay?

We stayed at the two-story, three-star Acharavi Beach Hotel, which is located close to the beach. The rooms are small but comfortable, there are studios with a kitchen, and there is a standard one. The hotel has two swimming pools: for adults and for children, and a bar with a good selection of cocktails. The food is quite decent, everything is tasty, but the choice of dishes is small (salads, desserts, 2-3 hot dishes).

The only thing I didn’t like was that the extra bed for the child had a folding bed instead of a bed. Everything else suited us.

1) The ancient fortress of Paleo Fruri, which dates back to the 7th century. There is also the Church of St. George, it is surrounded by columns and located at the foot of the observation tower.

2) Mount Pantokrator, the highest on the island; if you climb to the top (it takes 2 hours), you can see not only the island, but also neighboring Albania.

3) Temple of Poseidon, it consists of ruins of columns; it is better to explore this attraction in the evening to admire the sunset.

4) Achilleion Palace, located 20 kilometers from Kerkyra. In addition to the museum halls, there is a beautiful three-level garden.

The island of Corfu, located between the two seas, the Adriatic and Ionian, offers tourists a lot of pebble and sandy beaches. You can be sure that on any beach you choose the water will be clean and the entrance to the sea will be gentle. We especially liked Agios Georgios beach with fine clean sand and clear water. On the beach there are sun loungers and umbrellas for 2-3 euros, showers with fresh water. There are many taverns, cafes and restaurants nearby.

Pros of holidays in Corfu

1) Large selection of beaches.

2) Delicious food.

3) Two seas.

4)Very beautiful nature.

5) Historical monuments.

Disadvantages of holidays in Corfu

1) There are a lot of mosquitoes and bees.

2) Prices are higher than on other islands.

3) Bad roads.

4) High humidity.

5) There are sea urchins in the water.

Is it worth a holiday in Corfu?

Despite some disadvantages, we really liked the island of Corfu, it was sad to leave there. This is a wonderful paradise for an interesting holiday. Of course, Greece has some peculiarities, briefly about them.

1) In restaurants it is customary to leave a tip on the table.

2) Lunch break in stores is 2-3 hours, of course they are closed.

3) When purchasing a fur coat, you must take an invoice to present at customs.

4) It is better to plan excursions in the morning, it is hot during the day.

5) To visit monasteries you need modest clothing.

The island of Corfu (Greek name - Kerkyra) belongs to the group of Greek islands located in the Ionian Sea. Its area is 610.9 square meters. km, length is about 64 kilometers, the widest part is 32 kilometers, the total coastline is 217 kilometers. The island, which stretches along the mainland, is home to more than 102,071 inhabitants. The western part of the island of Corfu is washed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea, and its eastern part by the waters of the Ionian Sea. Being in the north of the island, you can see the coast of Albania, located 1.5 kilometers from Kerkyra.

Ancient Greek myths say that this wonderful island was founded by the god of the seas, Poseidon. Having fallen in love with one of the daughters of the rivers, he kidnapped the beauty and settled her on an island in the Ionian Sea, as beautiful as she was. In honor of his beloved, Poseidon named the island of Corfu, and since then this place has been glorified more than once in legends, and Homer sang about it in his poems. Medea and Jason found their salvation in Corfu, having obtained the Golden Fleece, and on the way to Ithaca Odysseus stopped here.

The island is famous for its magnificent landscapes: beautiful green hills, numerous forests and olive groves, attractive beaches with golden sand and clear azure sea. In addition to natural beauty, here you will find many ancient monasteries and castles, historical and artistic monuments.

The island of Corfu is the greenest and most picturesque among the islands of the Ionian Sea. Thanks to its amazing nature and favorable geographical location, it has always attracted conquerors, as well as poets, artists and thinkers. Owning the island meant control over shipping, and therefore everyone tried to count Corfu among their possessions. Sparta and Athens started the Peloponnesian War for possession of the island; in the Middle Ages, Corfu was under the control of Sicily, which soon transferred power to Venice for many four hundred years. The island was able to withstand the siege of the Ottomans, but could not withstand the onslaught of Napoleon's troops. The island was also under English rule, and in 1864 Corfu officially became a possession of independent Greece.

Transport

You can move around the island during your vacation using different types of transport: taxis, rented vehicles, and municipal transport.

Taxi

Arriving in Kerkyra and leaving the small airport building, you will immediately find numerous taxis offering their services. Here, as in all of Greece, it is worth checking the cost of the trip and its route, otherwise you risk significantly overpaying.

Car rent

Of course, renting a car is much more convenient and cheaper if you plan to move around the island a lot. There are a lot of rental shops here offering a variety of cars, mostly manual ones. If you need a car with an automatic transmission, it is best to reserve it in advance on the Internet (for example, in the companies Corfu-town, Corfusunrise, Kosmos Rent A Car).

A car with automatic control will cost much more than a manual one; for example, a four-day rental of a machine costs an average of 160 euros. It often happens that you have to wait a day or two until a suitable car is found, especially during the height of the tourist season. The cost of gasoline in Corfu fluctuates around 1-1.10 euros. For one week of stay you can use about 50 euros worth of gasoline. You can refuel anywhere, as there are enough gas stations throughout the island, even in the most remote corners of Corfu. The only drawback is the lack of gas station markings on the map, and their working hours are not always convenient. Early in the morning you are unlikely to be able to fill the tank, nor at noon, when everyone is closed for a siesta.

When accepting a rented car, be sure to inspect the car for dents, scratches and the condition of the tires in order to avoid possible misunderstandings in the future. But, usually, tenants do not pay much attention to minor damage.

Our regular license cards are also valid in Corfu, but if you have an international license, be sure to take them. Please note that in Greece, and in Corfu in particular, there are strict fines: parking in an undesignated place - up to 250 euros (within the city), driving through a red light - 750 euros, not wearing a seat belt - 350 euros.

ATVs

Another type of popular rental vehicle is ATVs. Traveling around the island on an ATV will give you unique riding pleasure. It's nice to ride in the heat, feeling all the smells of the island and the salty, refreshing wind hitting your face. The only downsides are a little shaking and low speed, but you get a different kind of pleasure and are unlikely to want to change the ATV to a car. Drivers on the roads are very polite and friendly towards other road users driving small vehicles, they never cut you off and patiently let you pass. The cost of renting an ATV ranges from 15 to 25 euros/day, depending on the model and power. However, you must have your license with you, as this is required by the rules for riding ATVs and scooters.

Municipal transport

The island of Corfu has a well-established bus service between major settlements. The bus station is located in Kerkyra near the New Fortress. Tickets are sold from the bus driver or can be purchased from a machine at the bus stop. When using the machine, you need to know at least a little Greek, so it is better to ask local residents for help, and also have a lot of small change with you, since the machine does not give out change. The low cost of public transport allows you to explore the entire island in the most economical way. At kiosks located at bus stations, you can purchase maps with routes, as well as find out exactly where the bus you need stops. Often buses stop in places that do not correspond to the signs.

In addition to bus stations, you can always take a bus along the road, anywhere, you just need to make a corresponding sign to the driver. All municipal buses are comfortable and air-conditioned.

What to see

On the island of Corfu, in addition to a first-class holiday, you can take exciting excursions and visit a number of interesting places.

Things to do

Beaches of Corfu island

The island of Corfu is an ideal holiday destination. Here you will find beautiful, well-maintained beaches, crystal clear seas, the opportunity to sunbathe, engage in water sports and beach volleyball. The weather on the island is almost always favorable for relaxation.

Many of Corfu's beaches are ideal for families with children of all ages, even the youngest, as the sea becomes deep gradually and this allows children to splash around on the shore completely safely. And on the clean, velvety sand, kids can play around for a long time, building castles and fortresses.

Beaches and bays of northern and northwestern Corfu

The beaches of this part of the island are mostly sandy, and the sea is quite shallow; you need to walk a long way to deeper waters. Northern and northwestern winds prevail here.

Purchases

From a trip to the island of Corfu, you can bring home wonderful Greek products and goods, as well as various souvenirs that will remind you of your trip. In all the villages of the island there are small shops and souvenir shops, but most of them are located in the capital of Corfu - Kerkyra. On the main street of the city there are department stores, smaller shops, brand boutiques and retail shops. Note to tourists: all Greek shopping establishments must close for a break during the hottest time of the day - from 12 to 16 hours. On the island of Corfu there is a huge variety of original souvenirs made by the hands of Greek craftsmen.

Among the abundance of goods you will find wonderful things made of wood: olive, cypress and beech, as well as natural stone, glass and leather, for example, jewelry, various belts, shoes in the traditional Greek style, and clothing items. Here you can buy interesting jewelry of the finest handcraft. There are many fur stores with a wide assortment: fur coats, hats, vests, boas. A wonderful gift would be a set of bed linen decorated with hand embroidery, fine lace and traditional clothes made of fine cotton, CDs with traditional and modern Greek music.

It is worth purchasing excellent Greek cosmetics made from olive oil. In Corfu you have the opportunity to buy the famous Patounis soap for yourself or just as a gift. In his soap factory, which is also a museum, natural soap is still brewed according to an ancient recipe without the addition of artificial substances. The Patunis soap factory produces only three types of soap: olive, date and green (based on olive seed oil).

The island produces some of the finest olive oils, as the olives are allowed to fully ripen, resulting in a rich, delicious Corfu oil. The cost is different everywhere, for example, in a Kerkyra supermarket a liter of olive oil will cost 6-8 euros, bottling in the market will be more expensive - about 5 euros for 0.3 liters, in duty free oil in cans costs from 7 to 10 euros per liter. Along with olive oil, buy pickled olives, candied kumquats, which grow in abundance here, and liqueur made from them. You can add traditional feta cheese and other Greek cheeses and Greek sweets to your purchases. Among alcoholic products, we can recommend the Greek aniseed vodka ouzo, Metaxa, various liqueurs and tinctures of herbs and fruits. Alcoholic drinks are sold on every corner, as well as in duty free. Prices are approximately the same everywhere.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine is famous for its huge variety of products and dishes, prepared in the most unusual way, without the use of heavy fats.

While relaxing on the island of Corfu, you will not only enjoy the gentle sea and the Mediterranean sun, but you will also have the opportunity to enjoy traditional Greek cooking. Huge olive plantations were planted on the fertile island; they say that in the Byzantine period, for one olive tree planted, a peasant was rewarded in gold.

Olives here are harvested late, after waiting for them to fully ripen, which is why Corfu oil is considered the best. In addition to olives, lemons, kumquats, once imported from China, oranges, grapes and other fruits grow in Corfu. For tourists who prefer tasty and healthy food, the island of Corfu will be a godsend. Among the great variety of traditional Greek taverns, bars, cafes and restaurants, everyone can choose an establishment to suit their taste and budget. If you want to taste the real cuisine of the Greeks, what they themselves eat, then choose places where the locals have dinner or lunch. The variety of products and dishes prepared from them is unusually large, but the main directions can be briefly outlined.

Vegetable dishes

The most popular vegetable among Greeks is eggplant, which is prepared in all sorts of ways. But all other vegetables are also very popular: tomatoes, cucumbers, artichokes, peppers, beans and many others. There are countless names of salads prepared from a variety of vegetables. Grape leaves and tomatoes stuffed with meat or rice filling are very tasty.

Fish dishes

You can try classic Greek fish dishes in special establishments - psarotaverns, which, as a rule, are located near the seashore. Here you will find a large selection of different fish and seafood dishes. In psarotaverns there is always the freshest fish, caught in the morning of the current day and prepared in various ways: fried, stewed, baked, stuffed, smoked, hot, cold, salted and dried. Seafood dishes are very tasty: mussels in sauce, oysters, octopus, cuttlefish. Lunch, consisting of salad and seafood dishes, will cost, on average, 45 euros for two. Fish dishes are much cheaper, and note that the portions in all establishments are very large.

Meat dishes

The taverns offer a variety of meat dishes that will not leave you indifferent. A special place is occupied by beef and rabbit stewed in pots with wine, seasoned with a whole bouquet of spices. A very popular Greek dish is souvlaki, made from pork and lamb. It is also worth trying meat cooked according to an old recipe on a spit over smoldering coals. All meat dishes use a large number of herbs and spices, making the dishes unique and very tasty. Some taverns serve hot rasto soup made from beef, which is very hearty and thick. There are also lighter soups, such as kotosupa me avgolemono - a chicken soup with rice, beaten egg and lemon. However, in general, first courses are not very common on the island due to the hot climate.

Dairy

Large herds of sheep, goats and cows graze on the green and fertile island, from which they receive a lot of valuable milk. Greek dairy products are slightly different in taste from Russian ones, they are more nutritious and tasty.

The most popular are yoghurts and a variety of cheeses, the most famous of which is feta cheese. This cheese is used in many Greek dishes and salads. Many taverns serve a very tasty and unusual dish made from sheep's yogurt with various herbs.

Sweets and desserts

Any Greek lunch or dinner usually ends with dessert. It can be anything: various fruits and berries (oranges, peaches, apricots, grapes, plums, watermelons and melons), products made from sweet thin dough with filling - filo baklava (rolls with nuts, honey, etc.).

Coffee and other drinks

The most common drink on the island, as in the rest of Greek territory, is coffee. It is prepared and served in various ways: vari glyco is strong coffee with added sugar, matrio is slightly less strong and moderately sweet, sketo is medium-strength coffee without sugar. It is customary to drink coffee in small sips, while washing it down with cold water. Another favorite way to serve coffee on the island is cold coffee frappe (instant coffee is poured with cold water, sugar and fine crushed ice are added). Other traditional drinks consumed by the Greeks and offered in cafes and restaurants include all kinds of juices and fresh drinks, and mineral water. Tea on the island is mainly used as an aid for colds or intestinal diseases.

Alcoholic drinks

Taverns, cafes and restaurants offer a variety of Greek wines and stronger drinks. Greek wine is worthy of tasting and will leave a pleasant impression. The wines served are red and white from grapes grown in different regions of Greece. Stronger drinks - raki, ouzo, as well as various liqueurs and liqueurs. Raki is a grape vodka characterized by a tart taste and increased strength. Ouzo is aniseed vodka that is diluted with water and becomes a cloudy white color.

Connection

Internet

In the largest cities and towns you can find many Internet cafes. Internet access services will cost you approximately 5 euros per hour. In Kerkyra, similar establishments offer their prices somewhat cheaper. Almost all cafes located in major resorts have free access to wi-fi. Many hotel rooms also offer this service, which is usually free of charge. Some more economical hotels have internet rooms where you can use the Internet for free. In some very remote areas, coverage is either weak or completely absent.

Telephone

All kiosks sell special telephone cards of various denominations, which can be used to make calls directly from a pay phone. There are many such pay phones throughout the island, although only in large and busy towns and resorts. The cost of such a card starts from 5 euros, with it you can call both island numbers and abroad. You can also use tourist SIM cards for calls abroad, which are sold in kiosks, information centers and large stores. Local SIM cards are sold only to the holder of a Greek passport.

Safety

The island of Corfu is the safest place in Greece, at least this is what the local residents themselves say, who, by the way, do not consider themselves pure Greeks. This is explained by the fact that for a long period of time the island was under the influence of Byzantium, France and England. All the unrest and riots that have been observed recently on the Greek mainland have nothing to do with Corfu: it is always peaceful and calm here. Corfuans never interfere in Greek political squabbles, so everything always works here, even when the rest of Greece is on strike.

The local population is unusually hospitable and happily provides a warm welcome to the guests of the island. The crime rate is zero, since the island is small and everyone knows each other. Car thefts are impossible for the same reason, and there is nowhere to take them out. Albanians who once stole cars for parts were deported from the island by local authorities.

In Corfu you are unlikely to see even an ordinary fight, as this leads to a trial and a huge fine. So you can be completely confident in your safety, as well as the safety of your loved ones.

Some problems can only arise in high season, when hot Italians arrive. It is also not recommended to relax in those places where young Englishmen are accommodated, turning everything into an endless disco with all the ensuing consequences. Swimming in the sea is extremely safe: the local waters are considered almost sterile.

Beginning of the season in Corfu: when is the best time to go on holiday to Corfu? Weather on the island at different times of the year: winter, spring, autumn and summer, at the height of the season.

Corfu is a small green island located in the Ionian Sea, between Italy and mainland Greece. Corfu is characterized by special climatic conditions that make it unlike all others. Its territory is buried not only in the bright rays of the sun, but also in three million crowns of olive trees, slender cypress trees, grape groves and thickets of wild flowers. The island's natural treasures are spectacularly complemented by endless beaches, where the main "artery" of active recreation pulsates. Corfu hospitably welcomes both travelers with children and young people who are not indifferent to parties.

The tourist season does not last from the beginning of May until the end of October, which by resort standards is a very respectable period.

Weather in Corfu in winter

Winter on the island of Corfu is accompanied by low clouds and frequent precipitation. In December, the number of rainy days varies from 7 to 16. At this time, the clouds of the Azores cyclones are filled with moisture from the Mediterranean waters and literally flood Corfu, maximizing the groundwater level. Daytime temperatures are only five degrees higher than nighttime temperatures. Average statistical fluctuations during daylight hours do not exceed the amplitude of 12-18 °C above zero. In January, there is a partial positive trend: there is not so much rain, but its intensity is still high. Rural roads are washed out at this time, so you will have to forget about traveling long distances.

In February, the sun occasionally breaks through the swollen clouds, which gives winter Corfu a little bit of iridescence. However, gusty winds, which with a roar crash down high waves on the coast, somewhat distort the perception of the briefly cleared sky.

Holidays in Corfu in winter will appeal only to those whom inclement weather cannot plunge into despondency. And also for those who love to walk along deserted streets and examine ancient monuments, albeit in the pouring rain, but in splendid isolation.

Holidays on the island of Corfu in spring

The beginning of the season in Corfu is spring!

The equinox arrives in March, and the sun in Corfu is already warm at this time. The mercury thermometer shows +21 °C during the day. At night the air cools to +14 °C. With the arrival of April, the number of cloudy days is significantly reduced, and daytime temperatures rise to +24 °C. At this time, the island is covered with bright greenery, flowers bloom, and nature seems to begin a new life. Already in the first days of May, the turquoise water of the Ionian Sea is warmed up to +20 °C, which is the starting point for the opening of the beach season.

Tours to Corfu in May are much cheaper than at any other time of the year. This is due to the fact that the sea is still cool, students have not yet completed their studies, and the holiday season has not yet arrived. During this period, sea cruises are in demand, as well as excursions to various shrines of the island.

Weather on the island of Corfu in summer

In June there is a shortage of rain in Corfu. Due to the high position of the sun in the sky, temperature indicators are rapidly “creeping” upward. At midday, the thermometer often jumps over the +30 °C mark. It is at this time that the high season begins, which lasts until September.

In July, Corfu is dry, and the Ionian Sea warms up to +25 °C. In the coastal bays of the island there are many gushing springs that slightly cool the water during this period. The dry weather in Corfu continues into August. During the day the temperature is +34 °C, but northwesterly moist winds blowing in the afternoon soften the heat.

Is it worth going on holiday to Corfu in the summer? Many travelers answer yes without even thinking. In fact, this is not the best season for a holiday in Corfu.

In September, the air temperature in Corfu drops to +28 °C, and the velvet season begins. In the second half of the month, precipitation occurs, but it is fleeting and will not interfere with your vacation at all. The water surface of the Ionian Sea warms up to +24 °C in autumn, so you can swim without restrictions. In October, rains become more frequent, and the air cools down to +21 °C. If you decide to go to Corfu in mid-autumn, you need to be prepared for the unpredictability of the weather.
