Have a nice trip!

Are you staying in Milan or Bergamo and want to go to Lake Como on your own for a day? Nothing could be simpler. Even eight hours is enough to visit the most interesting places and villas, enjoy a boat trip and eat pizza.

And if you plan your trip well, you'll get a day of relaxation rather than intense running around. Author project about Italy Itally.ru Elvi Usmanova shared with Difficulty.net her experience of what to look at Como first.

When I was first going to Lombardy, a region in northern Italy adjacent to Switzerland, I doubted whether to go to Lake Como. I thought that this was an expensive and pretentious place, where vacationers stroll along the embankment, walk in new dresses and eat in expensive restaurants, and the prices are like in the Moscow Ritz-Carlton. These are such funny stereotypes! Probably, this is exactly what someone is going for, but the majority of people relax differently.

A lake of crazy beauty with a view of the mountains - I immediately fell in love. Look at the map - from Milan to Lake Como it’s a stone’s throw (~ 43-45 kilometers) to this inverted letter Y, each arm of which is 26 km long. From coast to coast at its widest point - 4 km.

Once upon a time, along the banks of Como there were only fishing villages, but gradually aristocrats, business magnates, high-ranking military officers, artists, captivated by the beauty of the local nature, occupied the best areas. The richer the new resident of these places was, the closer to the water he built a villa. That's why the most "freaky" views are from boats.

Check the schedule and travel by water. It's not difficult: ferries on Lake Como operate all year round. There are also small water carriers, but why spend extra euros?

Milanese (and not only them!) adore the lake. They come for half a day or a day, or for a couple of weeks - they live in numerous guesthouses, hotels or rent apartments. It’s cheaper where it’s higher, away from the water.

When is the best time to go to Lake Como? In April-May or late September-early October, so as not to crowd among other tourists. This is the time of blooming of azaleas or red leaves on maples. June is also good: you will have good photos. And in July-August there are only crowds in the background and sweaty faces. Plus prices for accommodation at this time are much higher. No, this is not at all what you dream about.

Below I give an approximate one-day itinerary along the “golden triangle” of Como: Varenna - Bellagio - Villa Carlotta. Enough for a first acquaintance, but, of course, this is a small part of what is possible.

Ideally, go around the lake completely, at least in a couple of days. But that's another story, and now a mini-case. Only what you need and nothing superfluous.

Here is a plan for an independent trip:

1. From Milan or Bergamo to Varenna

Train from Milan to Varenna:

From Milano Centrale train station the train leaves at 8:20, arriving at Varenna-Esino station at 9:23 (of course, you need to check the schedule each time before your trip). It is better to sit on the left side in the direction of travel - the views are better there. Tickets start from 6.70 euros. Don't miss this first train, the next one leaves for Varenna in only 2 hours.

Train from Bergamo to Varenna:

There is no direct train, but it is convenient with a transfer. We go like this: departure from Bergamo at 8:08, arrival at Varenna-Esino station at 09:23. Change in Lecco, the station is tiny, so you'll quickly find your bearings. The ticket costs from 5.50 euros, it is better to immediately take a return ticket. Trains from Bergamo to Lake Como leave once an hour. And don’t forget to validate your ticket, otherwise you’ll be fined. Conductors go frequently.

From the station to the pier 300 meters. But don’t rush straight to the boat, but go and see this quiet and peaceful town.

Minimum program in Varenna

Stroll along the embankment, go to the main square, enjoy a strong and inexpensive espresso. Everything is close here. The route “station - Old Town - coffee - pier” will take at least 1 hour.

Maximum program

I recommend it to lovers of gardens and beautiful views Villa Monastero(Monastero) on Via Polvani, 4 (this is a continuation of Via 4 Novembre, which comes from the city center). From the pier to the villa it is 750 meters, and a little longer from the station. The long narrow garden, which runs along the lake, is full of roses, magnolias and palm trees. It is neglected and overgrown in places, but very cute. You need at least half an hour for a walk, but at least 1.5 hours is better.
I don’t indicate the opening hours of Villa Monastero - it depends on the month, changes often, and sometimes the villa is closed for conferences, so before your trip, check the schedule on the official website.
A ticket to the garden costs 5 euros, to the garden and to the villa - 8 euros (in 2018). Or you can buy a joint ticket to visit Villa Monastero and neighboring Villa Cipressi, whose tiny garden is especially beautiful when the wisteria are in bloom (April-May). Villa Cipressi is open from March to the end of October from 9 am to 6 pm, and in winter only on certain days, check the official website.
The dilapidated Castello di Vezio towering above the city (oh, what views of the lake there are from here!) is a 20-30 minute walk uphill, so it’s better to visit it next time.

After completing this program, go down to the embankment, buy a ferry ticket and go to Bellagio, the most beautiful city on Lake Como - the guidebooks don't lie.

Villa Monastero

2. From Varenna to Bellagio

The ship departs at 10:55, 11:30, etc.

The ferry from Varenna to Bellagio runs 1-2 times per hour, travel time is 10 minutes. From May to September, come to the box office early - there is a queue for tickets. The boat has an open and closed part - for those who are cold.

Bellagio is located on the tip of the peninsula and is considered the most luxurious town on Lake Como. The downside is a sea of tourists. Plan on 3-4 hours for a walk around the city: the old center, numerous shops, lunch on the embankment or - cheaper - on the old streets further from the shore. There are many cafes and restaurants, but in the summer crowds of tourists storm the establishments: at lunchtime, for example, it is difficult to find a table. And now the main thing: there are at least two beautiful villas here - Serbelloni and Melzi. The first one is actually next to the pier, but people are allowed into the garden twice a day and by appointment. And to the second one you have to walk 1.5 km. And the path through the garden is even longer. But it's easy to get into.

Bellagio

Villa Serbelloni

If, after getting off the ferry, turn left along Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, and after 200 meters turn right and go up to Piazza della Chiesa, 14, you will reach the Promobellagio information office. It's a five minute walk from the ferry.
From the tour office at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m., a walking tour through the garden of Villa Serbelloni, which dates back to the 15th century, starts. 150 years ago, a fashionable hotel was built here; now it is the only 5-star hotel on the lake. Winston Churchill, Clark Gable, Al Pacino and many other famous people spent the night there. The gardens are, of course, open to hotel guests, but others can only get in on a guided tour from April to November.
The gardens are amazing, the views are stunning. The excursion can be booked in advance by phone. +39 031 951555 or + 39 031 950204. My advice: if you don’t like speaking foreign languages, write to [email protected] or sign up through their Facebook page (called Promobellagio). Please note: Tours are limited to 6 people signed up.
The tour costs 9 euros and lasts 1.5 hours. If it is windy or rainy outside, then it is cancelled.

Villa Melzi

It takes about 15 minutes to get to Villa Melzi from the pier in the other direction. It is located on Via Lungolario Manzoni. The villa once belonged to Napoleon's ally Francesco Melzi. The coolest villa on the lake, in my opinion. The garden is well looked after, the paths are smooth, the bushes are trimmed, the flower beds are well-groomed - a rest for the eyes. There are already a lot of flowers in April, and most importantly, colorful azaleas are blooming. The beauty is incredible. Flowering lasts until mid-May, but it all depends on the weather.
There is a tiny museum of archaeological finds (Etruscan, Egyptian and Roman). On the shore there is a Moorish gazebo, where Franz Liszt once worked.
Villa Melzi is open from late March to October, daily from 9:30 to 18:30. Entrance - 6.50 euros.

3. From Bellagio to Tremezzo to Villa Carlotta

The ship leaves, for example, at 16:24.

Six minutes by boat and you are on the western shore of Lake Como, in Tremezzo. From the Tremezzo pier to the famous Villa Carlotta - 5 minutes on foot.
Prussian Princess Charlotte received this villa as a wedding gift from her mother. It's a pity that the poor princess didn't get to spend much time here - she died at 23 after giving birth to her fifth child.
Not only the wonderful botanical garden is open to visitors, but also the building itself, light and spacious, which houses the art collection. The interiors are also impressive, especially the princess room. Among the exhibits are the marble “Cupid and Psyche” by Adamo Tadolini, “Palamed” and “Terpsichore” by Antonio Canova, etc. Don’t forget to look at the ceiling on the second floor - it’s fantastically beautiful!
By the way, the Italian fashion house Dolce&Gabbana recently filmed its Alta Sartoria collection for super-rich clients in this historical place. Jackets for 80 thousand euros and boots for 20 thousand looked good against her background. And I was glad that the villa received additional income that month.
But fashion is fashion, and usually the villa is open to everyone, although for a fee - a ticket to the garden and museum costs 10 euros. The multi-level garden has a huge variety of plants and trees: camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons (150 varieties), bay and citrus trees, bamboo and tea bushes. One hour was enough for us to make a circle around the garden, but you can come for the whole day. In summer it is cooler here and you can hide in the shade of trees, although there are few flowering plants at this time.
The website has already announced the work schedule for 2019: from March 22 to September 29 it is open from 9:00 to 19:30. In other months it closes to visitors earlier.

Here she is - the beautiful Carlotta!

4. Return to Milan or Bergamo

There are two options here.

The first is to return by ferry to Varenna and there take a direct train to Milan or with a change to Bergamo.

The second is suitable for those who come from Milan: take a speedboat and go back to the city of Como. Of course, you won’t have enough energy for the city itself, but a boat ride is good in itself. Along the way (on your right) don't miss the gem of Villa Balbianello in Lenno, perched on a high slope. If I had a lot of money, I would choose this place to live - it is hidden from prying eyes.

From Tremezzo the speedboat departs at 18:16 and 18:46. Travel time is 30-40 minutes, the ticket costs 10 euros. Have a nice trip and great impressions!

Your own cottage on Lake Como is as prestigious as a house on Rublyovka. The first villas on the shore of the lake appeared during antiquity, for example, Pliny’s dacha stood not far from Virgil’s dacha. This area is often called one of the most romantic in Italy. Lake Como is the third largest in the Italian Republic and the deepest in all of Europe. Read the review, From Milan to Lake Como for one day.

Lago di Como

In the southwest, the town is adjacent to a reservoir and all this is located at the foot of the Alps, on the border with Switzerland.

Como is often compared to a diamond, or a precious stone, framed by a lake and mountains. A very old settlement, it was incorporated into the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BC. e.

In the Middle Ages, Como was the center of contention with another Italian town - Milan

Once the Milanese ravaged the Comonian lands, and even earlier they burned the city buildings. Since the 15th century, the town has become one of the centers of book printing in Europe. Now there are more than 85 thousand local population. The settlement has many interesting attractions.

What to see in Como

The surrounding area of Como consists of numerous villages that stretch along the coast of a huge body of water. There are several dozen of them, among the most famous and visited are Lecco, Cernobbio, Laglio, Colico, Bellagio and others. It is unlikely that you will be able to visit all the interesting sights in one day, so you should plan your route in advance.

Old town of Como

The old part of the town is shaped like a regular quadrangle, which is protected by fortress walls; historians date them back to the 12th century. The main old streets are Lzheskalki, Pero, Vitani. It is on them that the largest number of buildings are concentrated, which date back to the medieval period; there are also earlier ones. A couple or three centuries ago, the main street of the nobility was Via Volta; you can visit it today. The main attraction on the street is the villa of the famous Italian scientist, thanks to whom it got its name; the street itself is built in a neoclassical architectural style. Nearby is the main square, where the three main calling cards of Como are located.

Cathedral of Como

The cathedral is adjacent to the central square, which is called Piazza, which literally translates into square in Russian. The second name of the cathedral is Duomo. Construction began at the end of the 14th century, in 1396, according to other sources in 1399, and ended only in 1740. Thus, construction lasted for 340 years. The façade of the building is made of marble. The originality lies in the fact that the basis is a romantic style, but the gates and other elements are made in Gothic. The fact is not surprising; during construction, fashion changed several times, including in architecture. The height of the dome is 75 meters. Inside you can see the luxurious interior and paintings dating back to the year 500. The wooden altar in the cathedral has been preserved from the 16th century.

Visiting the cathedral is free, you can even take photographs; it is prohibited to take pictures during religious services. You can get inside from 7:30 to 20:30 on weekdays and until 20:00 on weekends.

Piazza del Duomo on the map

Palazzo Broletto

The construction of the palace began in 1215 by order of the local city mayor, which is why in literature it is often called municipal. The old building is worth seeing if you come from Milan to Lake Como for one day. During construction, the palace was adjacent directly to the cathedral, thus trying to show the equality of city-secular power and power from God. Like other city buildings that were built over a long period of time, at least two architectural styles can be clearly traced in the architecture of the palace - Romanesque and Gothic. In addition to the two aforementioned styles, the façade has many details that date back to the Renaissance. Broletto has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Since the 18th century, the palazzo served as a theater and later as a large store. The last large-scale restoration was carried out in 1927. Now it is a tourist site, as well as a center where various exhibitions and special events are held.

Reservoir - Lake Como and funicular

The water surface of Como is called the natural miracle of Lombardy. It lies 40 kilometers from Milan. Holidays here are very popular among Italians and foreign tourists. Judge for yourself, fragments of films were filmed here: Star Wars, Ocean's 12, Casino Royale and others. Among the inhabitants of the villas are Madonna, Stallone, Ronaldini. Locals recommend visiting Como in late spring, when nature is fragrant. The destination is so popular that you can choose one of hundreds of tourist routes that are selected specifically for newlyweds, tourists with children or older people. You can focus on architecture, visiting museums, or active recreation. You can go further to combine everything at once and get the most out of your vacation.
