The best beaches in Cyprus

Finikoudes beach. Larnaca. Cyprus

(Phinikoudes Beach) is one of the city beaches of the city and it is located almost in the very center of the city, between two ports - the old port of Larnaca and the current port of Larnaca Marina. It can be easily reached by car (there are several ample parking areas near the beach), by regular city bus and bicycle, or you can simply walk to it. The beach is separated from the noise of the Ammokhostu road (Dekhelia Road) and city buildings by an embankment of date palms and flowering flower beds growing along the sides of the promenade.

Governor's Beach. Cyprus. Limassol

(Governor’s Beach) can perhaps be called one of the most unusual beaches in Cyprus. It is located 20 kilometers from Limassol and can be reached by driving along the A1 highway leading from Limassol to Larnaca. One name usually refers to a group of small beaches located in quiet coves and bays at the foot of the cliffs. The “Governor’s” beach owes its title to the British governor of the island of Cyprus, who loved this beach very much and, despite his high position, often came here to sunbathe and swim in the sea.

Beach Malindi Beach Bar Limassol Cyprus

(Malindi Beach) - the highest rating among the level of service. Visitors are provided with high-quality service and comfortable conditions for a relaxing holiday. A gourmet restaurant with excellent cuisine and service takes care of the beach and its guests.

Dasoudi Beach. Limassol. Cyprus

(Dasoudi Beach) is an almost flat coastline of the beach, approximately 1.5 kilometers long. Along almost everything there is a park of eucalyptus trees of the same name, and in some places the narrow shore of the beach is literally buried in the greenery of trees. For walking around the park there is a special walking path, Beach Pat. Fresh sea air and the smell of eucalyptus essential oils, richly saturating the air with its aroma, will provide not only a pleasant, relaxing walk in the park, but will also be very beneficial for the health of the respiratory system. A walk through the park will be especially pleasant on a hot day, when you can hide from the scorching rays of the Cypriot sun in the cool shade of the trees.

Ladies Miles Beach. Cyprus. Limassol

(Ladies Mile or Lady`s Mile) is the largest and one of the most beautiful beaches in Cyprus, the coast of which extends almost 5 kilometers in length. The name of the beach in English is a play on words and can sound either like Ladies Mile or Lady Smile - if you look at a satellite photograph of the beach, its slightly curved line can really resemble a light woman’s smile. The beach is located 15 minutes drive from. Almost the entire territory is a “wild” sandy, flat coast with sparse vegetation, along which you can walk for hours, enjoying the beauty of nature and solitude. The shore of the beach is covered with light, almost golden sand, more pleasant in color and soft to the touch than the sand in urban areas. In the area of the port, the coast is pebbly, and the sea steeply gains depth, but further on the coast becomes sandy, with rare rocky areas, and the seabed is flatter. The sea off the coast is surprisingly clean, and the color of the water varies from bluish to turquoise.

Kourion beach Cyprus. Limassol

It has a calm and measured atmosphere, it is well suited for a family holiday. But for young people looking for beach entertainment, Kourion beach will be a boring option - the entertainment sector is practically not represented here. It is about a kilometer long and has a mixed surface - there are sandy areas and small pebbles. On both sides the shore and the valley green with vegetation behind it are surrounded by high rocky cliffs. The seascape around is especially beautiful in the evening, when the sun sinks behind the rock ridge stretching towards the horizon. The sea near the beach is shallow, with a flat, gently sloping bottom, which begins to steeply gain depth thirty meters from the shore.

Cyprus has many great beaches. It is not surprising, therefore, that most vacationers come here precisely for these – beautiful beaches. The swimming season in Cyprus sometimes lasts for six months, and in August-September the water in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the island warms up to 27-28 degrees. Almost all the beaches discussed below are marked with the Blue Flag, which indicates their cleanliness and excellent ecology.

So, what is important to know about the beaches of Cyprus? Firstly, all local beaches are municipal and free. Almost everywhere on the beach you can rent sun loungers and sun umbrellas, but you can absolutely calmly (and free of charge!) come to the beach with your own mat and umbrella.

Secondly, all the beaches of Cyprus are very different, and before you book a hotel, check whether the nearest beach is right for you: on the coast of Cyprus there are secluded and calm beaches, and there are those where music thunders from morning until late at night, and parties are interrupted literally for several dawn hours.

It is believed that the best beaches in Cyprus are in the resorts of Protaras and Ayia Napa, however, everyone has different tastes and preferences, and it is better to find out in advance about all the available alternatives.

Ayia Napa- a resort with a vibrant nightlife: parties and clubs there - literally at every turn. Parties on Nissi Beach start almost in the morning. However, the resort is very well planned, so that all the clubs are located in the interior, and the beaches are on the coast. Therefore, even with children it will be very comfortable to relax here (just don’t miss the choice of the beach!)

Protaras ideal for those looking for a relaxing family holiday (and perhaps a little boring for those who like active holidays).

Larnaca– the most budget and quiet resort in all of Cyprus, there are wide beaches and a convenient gentle entrance to the water. There is one drawback - perhaps someone will not like the planes landing and taking off literally overhead. The sea in Larnaca is warmer than in Ayia Napa and Protaras (sometimes the water in August can warm up to 28 degrees, which seems to be too much: it’s already difficult to cool off in the heat in water of this temperature). The sand in Larnaca and Limassol has a gray tint, which is why the sea does not seem as turquoise as in Ayia Napa and Protaras.

Limassol- the largest resort in Cyprus. There are a lot of restaurants, clubs and other entertainment, luxury hotels, but the coast is not so picturesque. Beaches of Paphos– mostly rocky. Not at all suitable for families with children. But it is able to please divers and, in addition to this, Paphos has the most luxurious sea sunsets on the island.

Beaches of Ayia Napa

Nissi Beach(Nissi Beach) in Ayia Napa

This white sand beach near Ayia Napa is probably the most famous in all of Cyprus. In terms of importance for the entire eastern part of Cyprus, this attraction can be compared with Copacabana for Rio de Janeiro. The “highlight” of this beach is considered to be a small picturesque island in the sea, which can be reached along a sand spit. Nissi Beach has many hotels, excellent infrastructure and a relaxed atmosphere. True, at times the music coming from the speakers may seem overly intrusive.

At the same time, the beach infrastructure and range of entertainment on the beach are beyond praise!

BeachGreek Bay(Greek Bay) in Ayia Napa

Located almost in the very center of Ayia Napa, next to the 5-star hotel of the same name and next to the port. Thanks to its fine golden sand, this beach has gained fame as a favorite place for families with children. Here you will not find such revelry and fun as on NissiBeach, but not everyone goes to Cyprus for round-the-clock parties and new acquaintances.

The beach is well equipped. Mostly guests of the first-class hotels located along the beach relax here.

Kermia Beach(Kermia Beach) in Ayia Napa

The beach is located three kilometers from Ayia Napa, in fact, between Ayia Napa and Protaras, on the western coast of Cape Greco. It is small, sandy and very uncrowded, calm. From Ayia Napa to the beach you can even walk along the pedestrian path leading from the port along the coast. If you come here by car from Ayia Napa, the beach is located to the right of the highway. And between the highway and the beach there are numerous bungalows of the Kermia Beach Bungalow Hotel.

Makronissos Beach (Makronissos Beach) in Ayia Napa

Spacious (as much as 500 meters long), one of the most calm, comfortable, and at the same time clean and beautiful beaches in Ayia Napa. "Miracles?" - you ask. Pure truth! This state of affairs is explained by the fact that the beach is located about 5 km from the center of Ayia Napa, and the parking lot near the beach is very small, and in the season it is filled to capacity from the very morning. So we recommend coming here (unless, of course, you are guests of the nearby Dome Beach and Asterias Beach hotels) early in the morning.

There are no noisy beach disco parties here, but there is a good bar, and those who wish can play volleyball and do water sports. There is even a Diving center on the beach, not to mention the usual beach infrastructure - sun loungers, umbrellas, changing cabins, showers, etc.

Fine sand and a gently deepening bottom make this beach a suitable place for families with children.

Beaches of Protaras

Fig Tree Bay(Fig Tree Bay) in Protaras

A dream beach in Protaras - in 2011, according to Tripadvisor, the beach was included in the TOP 3 best beaches in Europe and still rightfully bears the proud title of the best beach in Cyprus. A wonderful, almost white, sandy beach with clear water stretches along the coast for 500 meters. It is well equipped: showers and toilets, cafes and restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, ample parking. If you are planning to come here, keep in mind that the beach is very popular, and by noon all the sun loungers and umbrellas will be occupied. So I advise you to arrive early.

Konnos Bay(Konnos Bay Beach) in Protaras

A small beach (200 x 40 m) with golden sand, located in a cozy bay 2 km southeast of Protaras (ie, between Protaras and Ayia Napa).

Due to the fact that the beach is located on a rocky hill, the descent into the water is quite steep, and the shore is rocky in places. Therefore, the beach is not suitable for vacationers with small children. But it is an ideal place for lovers of diving and snorkeling, as well as cliff jumping. High waves are very rare here, because the bay is protected from the wind on both sides.

Even at the height of the season you will not find a large and noisy crowd of vacationers here.

On the beach there is a rental point for umbrellas and sun loungers (the sun loungers here are more like plastic “troughs” in which you can not only sunbathe on the beach, but also swim in the water), a lifeguard tower, beach activities (quite traditional: boat trips and water activities sports). The parking lot is located on a hill, about 100 meters from the beach. Nearby there are cafes and restaurants, and several hotels.

The extreme points of the beach are more secluded, where you can feel complete unity with nature, peace and tranquility. From the beach, a narrow and winding path leads to picturesque caves, where in ancient times, according to legend, Cyclops - one-eyed monsters - lived here.

Also nearby is one of the most popular dive spots in Cyprus - ConnosPoint - I recommend it!

Louma Beach (Luma Beach) in Protaras

The beach with sand of a rich golden color (hence its second name - Golden Coast) is located in the central part of the resort of Protaras, near the Golden Coast hotel. The bay is protected from the wind on both sides, entry into the water is very comfortable, so the beach is recommended for vacationers with children.

All beach infrastructure is available here - rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, toilets, cafes. Part of the beach is located in the shade of fig trees.

Sunrise Beach(Sunrise Beach) in Protaras

All Protaras beaches are equally good for family holidays, including those with children, but the sandy Sunrise beach is considered one of the most luxurious and well-equipped. This is not surprising - after all, the beach is located near the 4-5-star Sunrise Beach hotel complex of the same name. Essentially, this beach is a continuation of the Fig Tree Bay beach, and then turns into another beach. As a result, in Protaras a long strip of beaches stretches along the entire coast, for many kilometers.

Just above the Sunrise Beach line there is a promenade with an abundance of shops and souvenir shops, taverns and beach bars. There is also a large supermarket here.

The beach has a well-developed infrastructure: rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, showers and toilets, a playground, a rescue tower, and areas for sports games. Beach guests also have access to such entertainment as diving, boat and yacht trips, and an abundance of traditional water attractions and entertainment.

The beach and seabed in this area are fine sandy, and the entrance to the water is gentle.

Flamingo Beach(Flamingo Beach) in Protaras

The beaches of the Protaras resort are simply ideal for a family holiday. The central beach of this resort is Flamingo Beach, with the most developed infrastructure and plenty of entertainment. Swimming here will be comfortable even for the little ones, because the descent into the sea is gentle, and the water near the shore warms up perfectly. The beach is surprisingly clean and the seabed is sandy, so there is no need to purchase special beach shoes as for pebble beaches.

For many who have visited here, Flamingo Beach resembles the coast in Jurmala, but here it is even more beautiful. Picturesque green slopes overgrown with grass descend to the water itself, and here you can hide from the sun not only under umbrellas, but also in the shade of trees. Umbrellas, sun loungers and parasols can be rented here. The beach has showers, toilets, and changing rooms. This beach is especially recommended for family holidays, and is very popular not only among tourists, but also among local residents.

Beaches of Larnaca

Faros Beach(Pharos Beach) in Larnaca

This wonderful beach with a grayish “mix” of sand and sandstone is protected from the waves by a breakwater that comes almost close to the shore and forms an ideal swimming pool for children.

The beach is located in the town of Pervolia, on the outskirts of Larnaca, on the picturesque Kiti Peninsula. There is enough space for everyone: even during peak season, the beach is not crowded with vacationers.

Keep in mind that there are two beaches with this name in Cyprus. (The second of them is in Paphos). The word "faros" is translated as "lighthouse". Indeed, on the western side of the Kiti Peninsula, there is an active lighthouse. So you can go to this beach not only for romantic photos, but also to get closer to such an important phenomenon for everyone who dreams of the sea, like a lighthouse.

Like all the others listed in this article, Faros Beach is the owner of the Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental friendliness. The beach infrastructure is adequate: the shore is equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, rescue towers, there is a volleyball court, and you can rent sports equipment.

Address: Faros Beach, Kiti Peninsula, Larnaca.

MacKenzie Beach(Mackenzie Beach) in Larnaca

The main feature of Mackenzie Beach is the Larnaca Airport runway located literally 100 meters from it. It’s unlikely that anyone would want to come here every day, but visiting it just to enjoy the view of planes landing right above you, if you haven’t seen it yet, is definitely worth it!

The beach itself is long and beautiful, there is no hustle and bustle. The entrance to the water is gentle, and the sea is clean. McKenzie, like most other beaches in Cyprus, is awarded the Blue Flag and is well equipped: sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, toilets, changing cabins and a variety of water attractions.

Beaches of Limassol

Ladies Mile(Lady's Mile)

Definitely the best beach in Limassol (located west of the city on the Akrotiri peninsula) and the largest beach in all of Cyprus. It's worth the drive from the city center. Clean water, warm sea, showers, toilets, sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, children's water attractions, a lot of cozy cafes and restaurants with affordable prices.

Near the beach there is a British military base, to which the beach owes its romantic name: it was named after a horse named Lady, which belonged to the commander of the base. The Limassol Salt Lake is also located nearby.

Governors Beach (Governors Beach, or Governor's Beach) in Limassol

This incredibly beautiful beach is located 20 km east of Limassol and 40 km southwest of Larnaca. Here you will find an almost alien landscape of miniature black sand beaches, separated from each other by cliffs of snow-white sandstone. The only thing that slightly spoils the view here are the buildings of the military base that begins almost beyond the beach.

The beach got its name in honor of the British governor of the island, who spent several hours a day relaxing on this picturesque beach (oh, and it was a dust-free job for a friend!)

Kourion Beach(Kourion Beach)

The picturesque Kourion beach, about 1 km long, near the village of Episkopi, is the Cypriot “mecca” of all kite and wind surfers. For mere mortals, this is simply a well-equipped beach with clear water, framed by picturesque high white cliffs. There are sun loungers and sun umbrellas, changing cabins, toilets, and showers. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the swimming season.

Nearby is a luxurious amphitheater and the entire archaeological complex of Kourion, with perfectly preserved mosaics.

Beaches of Polis

Latchi Beachin Polis

Latchi was once a small fishing village, but today it is a great place for a beach holiday. The beach is perhaps not as photogenic as the famous beaches of Protaras and Ayia Napa (because Latchi is a small pebble beach of a dirty gray color), but Latchi is an ideal place for everyone who is tired of the hustle and bustle and does not find the desired relaxation in crowded popular resorts. Here you can spend time calmly and alone, be alone with nature (the sea here is the purest, magnificent turquoise color!) and your own thoughts.

The beach is well equipped: there are showers, toilets, platforms for easy entry into the water, a path for people with disabilities, rental of sun loungers and umbrellas.

Latchi is located on the picturesque Akamas Peninsula, near the city of Polis.

The Latchi coastline stretches for 1.5 km and smoothly (almost imperceptibly!) merges into Polis beach. The beach strip is wide - 30-50 m. The parking lot is separated from the beach by green vegetation. Breakwaters extend 50 meters into the sea from the shore, thanks to which there are no strong waves or undercurrents. In addition, you can sunbathe on the breakwaters while enjoying complete privacy.

The descent into the water is smooth - this is a big plus if you are relaxing with children. The depth begins at a distance of about 7 m from the shore. The water here is always well warmed up, especially during the season.

Beaches of Paphos

CoralBay(Coral Bay Beach) in Paphos

The crystal blue Coral Bay in Paphos is, strictly speaking, not located in the city itself, but thanks to the excellently organized bus service and ample parking, it is convenient to get here.

The best beach around Paphos.

By the way, the yellow sand, which makes Coral Bay so popular among tourists and locals, is brought here from other beaches in Cyprus. In about 20 years, the sand on the beach is completely renewed (as the sea gradually washes it away).

Petra tou Romiou in Paphos

This bay in the suburbs of Paphos is one of the most beautiful and famous places in Cyprus. It was here, according to legend, that Aphrodite emerged from the foam of the sea, and here since then a picturesque rock, the “stone of Aphrodite,” has been lying in the water.

The beach here is pebbly, but thanks to this the water is azure blue and very clean. The sea here is unsafe, so jumping from the rocks is not recommended, but swimming three times around the “Aphrodite’s stone” is recommended for everyone: women for eternal beauty and youth, men for inexhaustible strength, and lovers for eternal love.

Lara Beach (Lara Beach)

Lara is the most “turtle” beach in Cyprus. This rocky beach is located north of Paphos, in an area that can only be reached by a four-wheel drive vehicle. It’s probably not worth going here just for swimming, but wildlife lovers can find a lot of interesting things here during the appropriate season: this truly protected corner of the Mediterranean is full of turtle nests, and in its coastal caves rare white-bellied seals hide from prying eyes.

The tourist flow to the Republic of Cyprus is increasing every year. It is beneficial for the island to attract vacationers, so tourism infrastructure is being developed here: new hotels, roads and shops are being built, and historical and architectural attractions are maintained in proper condition. But guests are most attracted to the resorts of Cyprus with sandy beaches, and there are a considerable number of them here. Soft sand, smooth entry into the water, versatile water activities - this is appreciated by families with children, young people, and older people.

The most famous and largest Cypriot resorts are Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca. They lie along the coast of the island. Almost all the beaches on the coast are sandy; they differ only in the color of the sand: natural black, yellow or bulk white. Most of them have blue flags for developed infrastructure and cleanliness, so you don’t have to worry about their environmental safety.

Many of them are municipal property, so entry to the beach is free, but you will have to pay for using all the infrastructure on the shore. This applies to renting sun loungers and umbrellas, and to riding catamarans or water slides.

Cyprus hotels with a sandy beach are in particular demand, so it is recommended to book rooms in advance. Let's look at the resorts in more detail from the point of view of beach tourism, including choosing ones suitable for families with children.

The resort town in the east of the island grew over several decades from a small village at the monastery of Ayia Napa (“holy avenue”). Now the ancient monastery functions only as a museum, and believers go to services in the new temple built nearby.

Today Ayia Napa is a major tourist city, focused on active and club recreation for young people. The city has countless clubs, bars, discos and souvenir shops. The best sandy beaches of Cyprus are located here, among them the following can be distinguished:

  • Nissi is the most famous beach in Cyprus, and accordingly, the area around it is occupied by the most luxurious hotels. Coastal restaurants, bars and hotels are vibrant even in the dark: lively music is played and noisy themed parties are held. The highlight of Nissi Beach is its white fine imported sand covering the coastal strip. Entertainment on the beach is available to people with different financial conditions and levels of physical fitness: this includes sailing on yachts and catamarans, bungee jumping, banana boat and parachute riding, and playing beach volleyball. After an active pastime, tourists can eat in numerous cafes on the seashore. Nissi Beach has vast shallow areas where the water warms up well even at the end of the swimming season. On the right side of the beach (if you face the sea) there are rocky areas. There is a small island in the sea not far from the shore, which can be reached on foot along a sand spit. Tip: Wear beach shoes when crossing the island to avoid injury from sharp rocks. The disadvantage of the place is that it is crowded.
  • Pantahou - located to the right of the fishing port. Stretched for more than a kilometer. The narrow beach strip is framed by a rocky shore with growing palm trees and acacias. The crowded shore becomes quiet only at night and in the pre-dawn hours. To relax with children on this beach, choose its left, calmer side. On the right side there are restaurants and hookah bars, discos and bars.
  • Landa, or New Golden Beach, is 400 m long and 50 m wide. The white sandy beach is a Blue Flag holder and is more suitable for children than Nissi. Landa Beach offers sports and entertainment equipment rentals, bungalows and restaurants, picnic areas and parking lots.
  • Makronissos is a non-party area 5 km from the resort center. Hotels attract families with children precisely because of this quiet shore with fine light sand and a gentle entrance to the sea.

There are others in the Ayia Napa area that are suitable for families with children: Ayia Thekla, Sandy, Krio Nero and Kermia.

Makronissos Beach

Protaras

This resort in the southeast of Cyprus is aimed at families with children. Located 10 km from Ayia Napa. When looking for resorts with good sandy beaches in Cyprus, many family tourists choose Protaras. On the shore there is white sand, developed infrastructure and a gentle entrance to the sea.

  • The beach in Fig Tree Bay has become a place of rest not only for visitors with children, but also for local residents. Crowded during the high summer season, the influx of tourists is reduced in September and May, when schoolchildren are in school. Elite hotels near the beach, operating on an all-inclusive basis, offer guests a variety of services: use of a swimming pool, boat trips along the coast, excursion trips to interesting places, rental of beach equipment: scuba gear, catamarans, boats. Budget hotels and boarding houses offer only comfortable accommodation for a low cost, sometimes with breakfast.
  • Konnos Bay is located 2 km from the center of Protaras. Not very suitable for families with children due to the steep or long descent to the sea, but perfect for scuba divers and divers.
  • Luma, the beach next to the Zolotoy Bereg hotel, is located in a cozy bay, protected from wind and waves. Golden sand, green date palms in the hotel area, cleanliness, shallow blue water - ideal conditions for a cozy family vacation.
  • Sunrise, a beach near the hotel of the same name, located on the shore. The uncrowded shore with fine sand stretches for 500 m. Entrance is free for everyone. Those staying in nearby hotels will find entertainment on the beach for children, young people and the elderly.
  • Flamingo is a beach with fine sand, where grassy green slopes descend directly to the water. Cyprus resorts offer not only passive, but also active recreation, Flamingo is no exception. Boats and steamboats, jet skis and paragliders, tennis courts are available to vacationers, and souvenir shops and cafes are open on the embankment. Quite a crowded place.

Beach at Fig Tree Bay

Limassol

This city in the south of the island is one of the largest in Cyprus, and one of the noisiest and most cheerful. Like many popular resorts, the city builds hotels of various levels of service to suit any budget, so both lovers of luxurious life and people on a limited budget come here. From Limassol you can go on boat excursions to Israel, Egypt or the island of Rhodes. You can have fun with your children in water parks, amusement parks and the zoo.

In Limassol, the beach area stretches for 10 km; the beaches are not only sandy, there are pebble and sand-pebble beaches. The sand in Limassol is dark volcanic, with impurities that are beneficial for human skin.

The best beach in Limassol is the sand and pebble Ladies Mile (“Ladies’ Mile”). It is very long, about 7 km in length, and has all the necessary infrastructure. Here you can go diving, karting, and yachting. There is also entertainment for children. Among the sand and pebble ones, you can also name Dasoudi, Akti Olympion, Governors, Pissouri, Aphrodite and Miami.

Ladies Mile

Larnaca

This city in the southeast has a long beach line of 25 km. There is no white sand here, so beloved by children. The beaches are covered with small pebbles or gray sand mixed with shell rock. The beach infrastructure is also very diverse. Among the beaches are the following: Finikoudes, Dhekelia, Mackenzie, Faros, Kastella, Yanates.

Finikoudes

Pathos

The city in the southwest of Cyprus, according to legend, is the birthplace of the goddess of love Aphrodite. She emerged from the sea foam on the shore of Petra tou Romiou. Within the city there are sandy, pebble and wild rocky beaches. We are considering only sandy ones where you can come for a comfortable holiday with children - Coral Bay, Corallia, Vrisudiya. Sandy and pebbly: Geroskipou, Latchi.
