Today I was puzzled by the question: where to go skiing at the beginning of 2018.
Assuming that we will return home in mid-January, I allocated the last week of January for skiing.
From previous trips to the mountains, I noticed that in the middle and end of January there is a shift change at the ski resorts:
– the peak of New Year’s prices has passed, and the next one, the February peak, has not yet arrived.
People had a blast during the New Year holidays, spent a lot of money, and will already miss skiing in February.
Choosing a ski resort in Europe
Lately we've been riding in and.
This year we have a lot of Italy in, so for January I looked at the ski resorts of Austria - Tyrol.
I didn’t want to discover America, so I looked at the places we had already been.

How did you watch it? – I opened a booking for resorts and looked at decent housing - apartments - about plus/minus a few days in the required period of time.

Purchasing air tickets
I'm looking at air tickets on the website.
The best option to get closest to Obergurgl is to fly to the Austrian Innsbruck.
But here’s the thing: for my dates there are no direct flights from Moscow to Innsbruck.
There are two more airports in the area - Munich and Salzburg.
There are direct S7 flights to both Munich and Salzburg from Moscow.
Airfare prices are the same.
The distance from Munich and Salzburg to Obergurgl is the same.
Rent a Car
I look at car prices on the website at Munich and Salzburg airports.
The cost of renting a car in Salzburg is twice as expensive as in Munich.
And this despite the fact that the car rental period in Munich is longer by a day due to the evening flight to Moscow.

Ski rental at ski resorts
I've been traveling to the mountains light for a long time.

Davos
The city of Davos is located in Switzerland. Not only people come here, but also people suffering from pulmonary diseases. The local climate greatly alleviates the consequences of their ailments for such guests.
Advantages
The main advantages of Davos include clean air. Thanks to her, being in this region has such a beneficial effect on health.
The slopes of Davos are not satisfactory and are highly rated by both amateurs and professional skiers.
Megève
Advantages
The height of the slopes in Megeve reaches 2.5 thousand meters. Even at an altitude of 1.8 thousand meters, coniferous trees grow here, which give the appearance of the area mystery, grandeur and beauty.
Megève is perfect for those who are used to vacationing with the whole family. It is very quiet and peaceful here. In addition, holidays in these places are inherently romantic.
Gudauri
Undeservedly, many avid tourists ignore Georgia. Meanwhile, there are also many excellent ski resorts with good quality slopes and beautiful nature.
Advantages
The Gudauri region became a resort not so long ago. Therefore, it has unbeaten trails and new hotels. Everything here meets the trends of the times. It's fresh and modern. Austrian specialists were involved in equipping the bases.
The length of the local slopes is not as huge as in other ski regions, and reaches only 16 kilometers. However, such a modest length is compensated by the high quality of the trails.
The highest descent begins at an altitude of three thousand meters. From this point, athletes can admire the magnificent local landscape.
Another pleasant detail of Gudauri is the climate of this region. It's very soft.
Bansko
Advantages
Fans of this resort love it for its beautiful, inimitable nature and architecture with a slight touch of antiquity, because the city has an ancient history.
The skiing bases are located on the territory of the Bulgarian national park called “Pirin”. Thanks to this, some routes go right deep into the forests. Lovers in beautiful places will not remain indifferent.
The local seasons are not as long as the Austrian ones: you can ride from December to April. Bansko is great for families with children. There are even kindergartens for little tourists here. Special routes are also created for them.
When describing the ski resorts of Europe, the Sierra Nevada cannot be ignored, if only because it is one of the most popular ski regions in Europe. It is located in the southern part of Spain.
Advantages
An athlete with any skiing experience will find a slope here that will suit him. Despite this, the place is rarely visited by novice athletes.
The peaks of the Sierra Nevada offer excellent views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlas Mountains. True, you can only enjoy it in clear sunny weather.
These places are rich in snow thanks to the nearby glacier. And just two dozen kilometers from the ski resorts you can already see palm trees, sand and beaches.
Those who like to relax in clubs and restaurants will find here many excellent establishments in which to spend time pleasantly.
Advantages
Thanks to its vast territory and the diversity of its mountainous alpine nature, Breuil-Cervinia boasts a huge variety of slopes. It is believed that riding in the same place here several times is an unforgivable mistake. After all, in a few days of rest here you may never repeat the route.
Here you can often see famous skiers and sports professionals.
There is a sea of excellent hotels, wonderful trails, and restaurants with delicious cuisine. But all this service comes at a high cost for tourists. Due to the high cost of services, we put Breuil-Cervinia only in seventh place on this list.
Winterberg
This popular place is located in Germany. Great for amateur skiers. Due to the modest size of the Winterberg peaks, the slopes here are gentle and easy.
Advantages
Many trails run through forests, which attracts flora lovers.
The town is quite large and has a large number of restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. Despite the high demand, there are practically no queues here. The resort can easily accommodate one hundred thousand visitors at a time.
Encamp
This place is not as popular as those described above. This resort is located in Andorra.
Advantages
The Encamp trails are of high quality. They are most suitable for those athletes who have recently started skiing.
This place is located in a very favorable climatic zone. Thanks to this, there is a lot of snowfall here in winter, and in spring it is warm and pleasant to ride.
Encamp is famous for its nightlife, which is attractive to young people. There are many clubs and bars where young tourists enjoy partying.
Ylläs
Advantages
Ylläs is quite famous. It owes its popularity to the longest track in Finland, the length of which reaches three kilometers.
But there are shorter descents here. There are also bases with children's trails.
It's a pleasure to learn to ride here. There are several ski schools in Ylläs.

Most of the territory of Slovakia is mountains: High Tatras, Low Tatras, Carpathian Arc. Ski resorts in Slovakia are some of the best and cheapest in Eastern Europe. Best ski resort - Jasna in the Low Tatras (on the map), with 14 trails, of which 3 are of high difficulty, 8 are medium and 3 are easy. There are also tracks for children, tracks for freeride, snowboards and snowmobiles. Jasna is an international tourist center of the first category, where international slalom competitions are held.

The length of the trails is 62 kilometers, half of which are difficult-level trails. There are tracks for snowboards, cross-country skiing, as well as 110 kilometers of hiking routes, for which a network of cable cars has been created.

Most of the Czech Republic is surrounded by mountains, the highest of which is Snezka (1600 m). The country's most popular mountain resorts are located in the regions of Jeseniky, Krkonose, Šumava and the Jezerské Mountains. Located in the Krkonoše National Nature Reserve Špindlerův Mlýn(on the map) - the most famous resort in the Czech Republic. It consists of two large slopes - St. Peter and Medvedin. Every year, European winter holiday centers report an increase in the number of guests from Russia. No, we are not the first, and not even the second... But the dynamics of the increase in tourist flow is increasingly forcing locals to translate menus in restaurants to “great and mighty” or to hire Russian-speaking ski instructors... And experienced tourists, as we know, often turn into novice property buyers abroad...
Austria
According to the data of the Austrian Tourism Office, every month this Alpine country receives about 40 thousand guests from Russia. Moreover, most often we go to Austria in winter - for example, last January more than 80 thousand Russians vacationed on the local mountain slopes.
Vienna is also popular. However, Austria remains largely a ski destination. The center of winter tourism is located in the state of Tyrol, which is considered the birthplace of alpine skiing in Europe. The most famous resorts are St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Ischgl, Sölden, Seefeld, Mayerhofen. It is impossible not to mention the slopes of the Salzburg region - Zell am See - Kaprun.
Buyers of real estate in Austria, as often happens, share the preferences of tourists. Our most popular resorts are the fashionable and popular St. Anton and Kitzbühel. We are willing to pay for fame – in this case, from €5,000 per square meter in a chalet. There are much more affordable places in Austria: for example, in the resort town of Zell am See, which is 60 kilometers southwest of Salzburg, housing prices start from €1,500 per square meter.
Andorra
From December to April, this tiny state, located on the slopes of the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, turns into a single ski resort. Andorra has two extensive ski areas, Grandvalira and Vallnord. Local resorts - Pas de la Casa, El Tarter, Pal, Arinsal - can be classified as mid-price, both in terms of prices for ski passes and real estate.
Apartments in new complexes at ski resorts or near them (however, wherever in Andorra you buy an apartment, it will be near a resort - the country is five times smaller in area than Moscow) are sold for €2000-2500 per sq. m. m. Accordingly, for €200,000 you can find a furnished apartment with two bedrooms, which can comfortably accommodate several generations of the same family. For €400,000 you can already get premium housing with mountain views.
Bulgaria
Ski resorts in Bulgaria - Bansko, Pamporovo, Borovets - regularly appear in ratings of the cheapest winter leisure centers in Europe. According to travel portal TripAdvisor, a day in the Bulgarian Bansko (night in a hotel, ski holiday, lunch and a bottle of beer) will cost an average of €125. For comparison: in Courchevel, France, a similar set will cost €515.
The difference in real estate prices is even more noticeable: in Bulgarian resorts the price per square meter starts from €450-500. Thus, for just €15,000 you can become the owner of a good-quality studio located near the ski lift. The cost of apartments in luxury buildings (for example, there are complexes where mineral water flows from the tap) is about €1000 per sq. m. m. By European standards, this is indecently cheap! Germany
The most famous ski resorts in Germany are located south of Munich, in the Bavarian Alps - Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, Oberstdorf... However, they are known not so much among professionals who love steep slopes, but among beginner skiers who are primarily looking for a comfortable place for a winter holiday with a family. Here, as elsewhere in Germany, there is excellent service, quality hotels, and affordable prices.
You can go skiing near Baden-Baden and in the outskirts of Berlin... We recommend that buyers of “winter” real estate pay attention to the area of the Bavarian Forest - east of Munich, closer to the border with the Czech Republic. In the local small towns - Bischofsmeis, Bad Griesbach, Freyung - there are very low housing prices. For €10-20 thousand you can become the owner of a two-bedroom apartment. In the resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the prices are completely different - about €2,000 per sq. m. m.
Spain
We associate the country of “flamenco and bullfighting” with fiery dances and enchanting festivals, wide beaches and warm seas, with wine and jamon, with Gaudi and Don Quixote... And almost never with snow and alpine skiing. Meanwhile, there are winter resorts here too. The most famous of them is the Sierra Nevada National Park in Andalusia.
Our compatriots do not rent apartments and chalets located on the very slopes of the Spanish mountains, for example, in the town of Pradollano. For what? Just an hour or two away from the Sierra Nevada there are numerous towns on the Mediterranean coast of Spain - where in the summer you can sunbathe and swim, and in the winter, if you would like, skiing and snowboarding. The asking price is from €1,500 per sq. m. m. of housing on the coast. In Granada, the largest city closest to the mountains, you should aim for €2000 per square meter or more.
Italy
Last season, for the first time in several years, Italian ski resorts were able to remove the Austrian stars of winter recreation from the podium. According to the Proalps agency, in the winter of 2012-2013, the Italian Val di Fassa was visited by the most Russians - as many as 17,000. The second most popular resort was Val Gardena, also located in northern Italy, in the Trentino region .
In the Italian Dolomites, our people prefer to buy private cottages, which in the ski resorts of Europe are often called the exquisite French word “chalet”. Prices start from €2,000 per sq.m. Thus, to become the owner of a small house with a view of the mountains you will need €200-300 thousand.
Slovenia
The local mountains are not as high as in other alpine states, the resorts are not as large, and the country as a whole is not so well known among its compatriots. Well, let’s admit that Russians sometimes completely confuse Slovenia with Slovakia. Meanwhile, the level of service and infrastructure in the ski centers of Slovenia is high, and prices are lower than in many European countries.
Solid houses in Slovenian villages located in the vicinity of the ski slopes are sold for €700-1000 per sq. m. m. In the Kravec resort, which is located in the suburbs of Ljubljana, prices start from €1000 per sq.m., in the towns of Bovec and Maribor - from €800-1000 per square meter. The most expensive and famous Slovenian resort is Kranjska Gora, where prices start from €2,500 per sq. m. m.
Finland
The ski resorts of Lapland - Ylläs, Ruka, Levi, Rovaniemi, Pyhä, Sala - have hundreds of ski slopes. Considering the climate, you can ski here for at least seven months a year. And not only for skiing - there are spa centers, shopping and entertainment complexes, bars and restaurants. There are resorts in Finland located closer to the border with Russia and further from the Arctic Circle - Tahko, Himos, Ruokolahti.
Prices for ski real estate, like any other in Finland, cannot be called low. The buyer should focus on €3,000 – 4,000 per sq. m. m. Independent construction of a cottage, which is also popular in Suomi, will cost around €2000 per sq. m. m.
France
The French Alps have the best of everything: the most extensive ski area, the highest mountain peaks, the largest number of lifts and the shortest queues for them. And of course, the most bohemian resorts are Chamonix, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Megeve, Meribel... Apres-ski program, i.e. entertainment after skiing is also at the highest level - in local restaurants you can meet show business stars, crown princes and ordinary millionaires.
Prices for alpine real estate correspond to the status of local winter resorts. The average cost per square meter varies from €5,000 to €15,000 depending on the location of the property, and reaches its maximum value in the central areas of Chamonix, Courchevel, and Meribel.
There are ski resorts in the south of France - Izola and Oron, for example. Their popularity among Russians is gradually growing, largely due to the proximity of the Cote d'Azur. The asking price is €8-12 thousand per square meter in Izola, €6-8 thousand in Oron.
Switzerland
And finally, we cannot fail to mention a country whose very name is synonymous with the highest quality of life. Almost two-thirds of Switzerland's territory is occupied by mountains, and the towns located on their slopes are known throughout the world - St. Moritz, Davos, Zermatt, Verbier, Saas-Fee, Champery...
Swiss ski resorts are among the "big three" most desirable winter holiday destinations in the world, along with those in France and Austria. However, the cost of apartments and chalets here is 30% higher than in France, and twice as high as in Austria. Laws that restrict the construction of new homes and their sale to foreigners inflate the value of existing properties. As a result, €15,000 per square meter in St. Moritz is far from the limit. On average, in the mountains of Switzerland, buyers should expect €7,000 per sq.m. and higher.

Cheap ski resorts in Europe
1. Villar
Villars, Switzerland, one of Europe's budget ski resorts, is just two hours by train from Geneva Airport. Next you need to take a tram to the village of Gryon, which is very convenient for skiers on the weekend. Both Gryon and Villar can offer a large selection of blue and red slopes, which can be enjoyed by both families and inexperienced beginner skiers.
There are not a large number of skiers here; the bulk of ski lovers are concentrated in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier.
2. Arlberg
Arlberg, Austria is a neighbor of the world famous Lech and St. Anton, which are part of the prestigious group of ski resorts "Best in the Alps", uniting 12 European ski centers. Among them are the French Megève, and Kitzbühel (Bavarian Alps), and Davos... At each of these resorts you are guaranteed an exceptionally high-quality vacation all year round!
Arlberg is much less known, a much quieter ski area, but it shares the same Sonnenkopf ski pass, a hidden highland area easily accessible by train and skiing on challenging, inaccessible pistes.
Ski buses departing from Wald can provide you with a friendly introduction to the area, and stay in one of the newly built luxury chalets in the Arlberg, just 10 minutes' drive from Stuben, a bustling large resort with a big name. .
3. Little Tibet, Italy
Another name for the Little Tibet mountain plateau in Italy is Campo Imperatore. This is a still little-known ski area on a 27-kilometer plateau in the province of L'Aquila (also L'Aquila, Italian: Provincia dell "Aquila) in the Abruzzo region.
For the convenience of skiers, the resort has four ski lifts. We recommend staying in a fabulous mountain hotel with an observatory, where once upon a time, during the Second World War, the Italian dictator Mussolini spent his last days in freedom and was captured...
Not far from the mountain slopes of little Tibet there is another small hotel - Nido dell "Aquila, a quiet corner of Italian comfort and delicious cuisine. Prices here are quite reasonable - a double room with breakfast will cost from 60 euros.

4. Borovets
Borovets could be your first ski adventure in Bulgaria! Few people know that in this former socialist country the structure of European-style ski resorts is already quite developed. Borovets is considered one of the best. It has well-groomed ski slopes, magnificent tracks that seem to be created for winter forest adventures, and for those who have not yet learned to ski, there is a good ski park.
You can stay in one of the best hotels in the resort - Rila. A week's holiday with hotel accommodation, half board, transfer, and payment for equipment rental will cost about 500 euros.
Ski Borovets is a great place for beginner skiers.
5. La Morte
La Morte in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is now called Alpe du Grand Serre and is located 50 minutes from Grenoble.
Why this name? -you ask... The thing is that two dark mountain slopes near a mountain village are very reminiscent of the body of a lying dead woman...
La Morte has the status of a family ski resort, it is much cheaper and faster to get here than the more fashionable ones - Alpe d'Huez (French Alpe d'Huez), the largest ski resort in the French Alps, or Les des Alpes (French Les Deux Alpes) in the center of the Oisans alpine massif.
For obvious reasons, the resort changed the ghostly name La Morte (dead (woman)) to L "Alpe du Grand Serre (translated as the Great Alpine Greenhouse). Alpe du Grand Serre is a medium-sized ski resort, the ski area is located in the northern Alps, in the commune La Morte, at an altitude of 1368 m above sea level.
As professional travelers have long known, one should go to French resorts not only in search of a great holiday, but also for good cuisine. In this La Morte (or Alpe du Grand Serre) will be at its best!
Getting to La Morte is quite simple - either by SNCF train from Grenoble (40 km), or by car to Grenoble, and then in the direction of La Mure, to the Alpe du Grand Serre ski area.
6. Romm Alpin
To get to the ski slopes in Romm Alpin, the easiest way to get to the ski slopes from Stockholm is to rent a car and a 90-minute drive to the north-west will reveal this wonderful winter paradise.
Romme Alpin is a discreet Swedish representative of the best ski resorts in Europe, focused on family holidays. It is located in the small village of Koppslahyttan in Dalarna, 13 km south of Borlänge, and is Sweden's largest ski resort outside the country's mountain ranges.
Construction of the resort began in 1985. A weekend getaway near Stockholm was planned here, the resort was created as a recreation area in a forested area, with mountain slopes the same height as Dalafjällen. Today, one of the largest snow factories in the Northern region operates in Romm Alpin; even in a completely snowless winter, it can put 760 snow cannons into operation and 7,500 cubic meters of snow per hour will be formed in the air at the same time; to transport such an amount of snow-white mass would require as many as 750 trucks !
Since Sweden is a rather cold European country, Romm Alpin can be too frosty at Christmas, but in March or early April the resort is the place for perfect skiing!
7. Mauterndorf
Mauterndorf, Austria is a real mountain village in the federal state of Salzburg, located on the slopes slightly below the huge ski resort of Obertauern. Next to it there are five excellent ski areas, and all are completely different!
