Now Batumi is the main resort of Georgia, the country’s government plans to make it the best on the entire Black Sea coast. A lot of money is being invested, skyscrapers are gradually rising on the site of old houses in the center, and people fill the spacious pebble beaches every summer. We remember the city primarily for its abundance of greenery, beautiful embankment and delicious food.

Tourist information centers will be of great help to you, where you can get an answer to any question regarding interesting places in the city, as well as get free maps. One office is located at the cable car station near the sea and works around the clock, the second is at the main entrance to Batumi Boulevard.

It doesn’t matter whether you come for two days or ten, there is always something to see in Batumi. Interesting places are mainly concentrated in the center and near the embankment - they are easy to get around on foot. Plus there are a few places outside of the city that are worth a trip too.

Sights of Batumi

Map of Batumi attractions in Russian at the end of the post, marked all the points there.

1. Sculpture “Ali and Nino”

One of the symbols of Batumi is moving 8-meter statues telling the story of the love of Ali and Nino. The author of this sculpture is Tamara Kvesitadze, and the opening took place in 2011.

The story of the lovers is described in a book of the same name, the authorship of which is not precisely established. The plot is briefly as follows: a descendant of a noble Azerbaijani family, Ali, falls in love with the daughter of a Georgian prince, Nino. But their faith becomes an obstacle, because the guy was a Muslim and the girl was a Christian, and their parents forbade them to be together. This whole story is reflected in the composition: sculptures of a man and a woman either converge or diverge, merging at one moment. we stood and watched this action for several minutes, spellbound. It looks especially beautiful in the evening when everything is illuminated.

Address: st. Seafront Promenade

How to get there:

2. Batumi Seaside Park

The famous landmark of Batumi was founded in 1881 by famous foreign gardeners of that time. Nowadays the boulevard is usually divided into old and new parts: the old part is approximately from the seaport to the singing fountain, and everything to the south is the new boulevard. There are cafes, restaurants, children's and sports grounds on the territory, and you can get to the beach at any time. It is very pleasant to stroll along the palm trees in the evening and breathe the sea breeze. Great place!

3. Cable car "Argo"

One of the most popular entertainments in Batumi is to ride a cable car to a nearby mountain with an observation deck from where you can see the entire city. The cable car is considered the longest in Europe (2600 meters, and the height is as much as 250 meters). From the cabin you can look at Batumi from above - a cool sight! I advise you to come here in the evening, when the sun is setting, then the photos will turn out well. In the evening, performances with Georgian dances and songs are also held upstairs, and the restaurant is open throughout the day.

Address: st. Gogebashvili, at the tourist information center

Travel price: 10 GEL round trip

6. Chacha Tower

A 25-meter clock tower near the Wonderland Park and next to the maritime terminal. An interesting feature of this tower is that chacha flows here for free, which you can drink. True, this does not happen all the time, but at random periods of time. We saw people waiting patiently on the stairs ;-)

Lighthouse and Ferris wheel

7. Summer theater

The Summer Theater is located right on Batumi Boulevard - it is an elegant building, but for some reason without windows. It reopened after reconstruction in 2013, the old one burned down. Performances are periodically held here, and the hall seats 1,200 people. I saw a photo of the old theater, of course it was beautiful - the new one is somehow heavy and massive.

8. Colonnades

White ceremonial colonnades are installed in Batumi Boulevard, the same ones stand at the entrance to the park on May 6. Previously, this was a kind of gateway to the embankment.

9. Wedding Palace

In Georgia, they support the endeavors of young people. So this building was built according to the design of a young Georgian architect in the shape of a dolphin, although we did not immediately understand what it was;-) Nevertheless, it is a beautiful and unusual building, where you can really get married both day and night. True, the documents will be valid only in Georgia. The cost of the ceremony is 150 GEL.

10. Europe Square

The most romantic and European part of Batumi is located in the central part of the old city. The square hosts many holidays and celebrations, there is a fountain, and there is also a tall statue of Medea with the Golden Fleece.

A cool place to relax in the very center of the city. In the middle of the park there is Lake Nurigel, where you can go boating. In the park it’s nice to sit on a bench in the shade and take a break from the Batumi heat, and somewhere on the edge there is a small zoo - the children will be happy!

20. Armenian Church

The church was built in 1885 according to the design of the Austrian architect Manfred, and money was collected by the entire Armenian community, which then lived in Batumi. During Soviet times, as usual, the church was used as a warehouse, and since 1959 it was given over to an observatory.

Sameba (Holy Trinity) Church is located on a mountain high above Batumi. The church is located at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, was built in the second half of the 19th century, and has recently been restored.

How to get there: It’s better to take a taxi, but there seem to be yellow buses from the Batumi Plaza shopping center that go to Salibauri (2 GEL).

Since you have opened this article, you have probably already decided why you need Georgia. Let me remind you - the sea, beaches, fruits, wine, Borjomi, people, a beautiful city and attractions.

From November the weather can deteriorate, it rains, and it gets cool in the evening. At the height of summer, the city is literally swarming with tourists, prices reaching a rather unpleasant maximum.

Is it safe to travel to Georgia alone?

Today I do not know a safer country than Georgia, out of more than 50 countries that I have visited, Georgia- one of the safest countries in the world. Pah-pah so as not to jinx it. IN Georgia in general, and in Batiumi in particular, you can travel alone quite calmly, even if you are young and beautiful. If you don’t specifically look for adventure, you are guaranteed nothing will happen to you.

Transport connections between Batumi and Tbilisi

If time permits, in addition to the surrounding area, you can visit Tbilisi and whatever else you have time for nearby. Georgia the country is small, getting from to Tbilisi you can do it in several ways and for little money.

Railroad is the most comfortable way

"... there are several Tbilisi-Batumi trains - morning express, evening express and night train. Tickets can be bought on the Georgian Railways website, ticket price is 10-15 dollars depending on the type of train. The site is available in three languages, everything is intuitive - you'll figure it out, I'm sure.

For reference: previously the railway station was only in the suburb of Batumi - Makhinjauri, now it is located directly in Batumi, Central business center

If you are interested in a beach holiday, you can live in the neighboring resort village of Kobuleti, and come to Batumi for a walk and cultural relaxation. Pfirst steps in Batumi

You will save time and money if you start by going to the Batumi information center. They will help you with almost all issues - girls can even be married off, if they wish, of course. At a minimum, you can take a card, despite the fact that you have a smartphone and new technologies, paper cards will not be superfluous. Ttransport locations in Batumi

Airport

Train Station- trains to Tbilisi and suburbs

City bus station and Tbilisi square, from here you can go by minibus to all ends Georgia and to some places in Turkey. I will not dwell in detail on minibuses, they are not the best type of transport in Georgia, try to look for other transfer options - taxi, rented car, organized tour.

Main city attractions in Batumi

The most impressive new buildings are located near Batumi Primorsky Boulevard, the boulevard itself is also the main attraction of Batumi. Parallel to it - Rustaveli street.

Alphabet Tower, the building of the Institute of Technology, various metal installations, singing fountains, the Radisson Hotel, and finally, a building in the shape of an inverted bottle - the House of Justice on the outskirts.

... there is no point in listing everything. ...walk and admire... in the evening all this is enhanced by lighting, which I remembered, despite the evening gatherings in Batumi...

Berth, near him the famous statue Love, it looks cool in the evening lighting.

Seaside Park, we lived very close to him. Singing Fountains and unusual Batumi registry office in the form of a pig.

If you move deeper Old town, can see churches of all faiths buildings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, many architectural styles. I won’t list them - this is a good reason to walk around, look and be impressed. Be sure to go through Abashidze street– the heart of old Batumi. However, you can find several similar streets.

Beautiful European Square, Medea statue, watch And fountain. Lots of unusual facades. Worth finding Batumi Governor's building– freshly restored and very beautiful.

Family and children's entertainment - dolphinarium, aquarium, Ferris wheel, cable car.

I recommend renting a bicycle for both adults and children; this can be done throughout the center of Batumi. The city has simply luxurious red bike paths that run along the sea and along the most beautiful streets. Two or three hours is just right.

In the evening - the most main attraction of Batumi - sunset, it sets over the sea and is a spectacle worthy of spending an hour and a half on this movie.

What to see in the vicinity of Batumi

Waterfall Makhuntseti

About an hour on the Batumi-Keda minibus and here it is Adjarian nature, which is not very visible from the city beaches - a 20-meter waterfall that fills the Adzharistskali River with the purest mountain water. I still recommend getting there by car or renting a taxi, possibly with a local guide, or a minibus - as a last resort and very budget option.

Five minutes from the waterfall there is a unique arched Makhuntseti stone bridge, don’t forget about it - it’s beautiful and fits very organically into the natural landscape.

On the way to the waterfall there is a famous Adzharistskhali wine house, this place is mainly taken to tourists who have bought excursion to the waterfall in city agencies.

Racha

A mountainous region that can be visited if you have enough time. The journey from Batumi with return will take two days, with an overnight stay. For the trip you need a jeep, which you can rent from one of the agencies, or buy a ready-made tour. Rachu Locals call it Georgian Switzerland - in addition to nature, there is an ancient monastery and caves. The place is located very close to the town of Oni.

IN Rachu you can stop by if you arrived in Kutaisi, spend the whole day there with an overnight stay and go to.

Accommodation options in the village of Oni (Racha)

The village has a tourist infrastructure; you can choose accommodation on the Hotels Combined website (roomguru) - hotels and guest houses in the village of Oni (Oni) .

Mtirala National Park

Chakvistavi village, Chakvi municipality, western part of the Adjara-Imereti ridge. A place where you can spend the whole day - mountain rivers, forest, cycling, waterfall. There is little information about the park - just select it in your GPS or on a paper map, get in the car and go. You can also buy a tour or arrange with the locals to take you and show you around. There is no need to spend the night, one day is enough.

How to get there: from Batumi you can get to the village of Chakvi by minibus (from Tbilisi Square), then by taxi for about an hour. It’s better to travel on your own in a rented car or with an excursion from Batumi.

The tourist office is located in the village of Chakvi on Chavchavadze street, 13

Gonio-Apsaros Fortress

... but let me not advise everyone to waste time on it. Only for those who are very interested in history... the remains of the foundation and the fortress wall are overgrown with grass in places. In my opinion, it’s better to go to another bar in Batumi and chat with the locals - you’ll learn more.

Botanical Garden

Located on the outskirts, you can get there by taxi - $10 or by minibus No. 13 from Tbilisi Square. You can also stop by the Botanical Garden on the road from.

Sea in Batumi

The best beaches in Batumi and its surroundings

is a fairly large city, and it’s also a port. I must admit that the sea here is not the cleanest in the surrounding area, although it is much cleaner than, for example, in Odessa. If locals swim within the city limits, it is only until lunchtime, then the current changes the water from clean to not always clean.

IN Butumi the cleanest sea in the area ferris wheels. The beaches are large-pebble and it will not be very convenient for children there. Batumi, after all, is a place about a city holiday, not a beach one. The best beaches are in the surrounding area, some are very close, 10 km away. from Batumi.

Lbest beaches near Batumi

Gonio and Kvariati

...only 10 km. from Batumi towards Turkey, this place is loved by locals and those who prefer a quiet family vacation... there is no entertainment other than the sea and the sound of the surf... it’s also better to take food with you, but everything else is the highest rating!

Accommodation in Gonio-Kvariati

About accommodation options in Kobuleti You can read the article on my new resource completely dedicated to housing - The most popular beach budget hotels in Kobuleti

Food. Where to buy groceries in Batumi

Near Tbilisi square there are market streets where you can buy everything - vegetables, fruits, pita bread, cheese, etc. Prices for local products are lower than in Kyiv. There is also a Goodwill supermarket near Tbilisi Square - it has everything, the prices are the same as in Kyiv, it is open around the clock. It is better to buy only wine in the supermarket; I recommend rose Saperavi and Kindzmarauli if you like sweet wines.

Where to eat in Batumi. Cafes and restaurants

Bar "Eredeli", near Europe Square

Old House, this is the number one cafe for us; here we tried almost everything that can be prepared in Adjara, drank several liters of wine and paid a symbolic 30 dollars for three. A memorable place, although given the amount of wine, there should have been no memory. Borjomi will help you in the morning!
address: Gorgiladze Street 29

Cafe Laguna, st. Gorgiladze Street, 18

Cafe Literary, K. Gamsakhurdia st., 18– delicious khachapuri and desserts

Cafe Izbushka, near Tbilisi Square on Chavchavadze Street - very inexpensive and very tasty, very tasty, be sure to order the kebab.

Meal format for a budget traveler: You shouldn’t completely give up cafes; after all, Georgian cuisine is one of the reasons why you need to go to Georgia. Cook it yourself, buy food from the market and alternate it with going to a cafe, only bottled wine, homemade wine is not always good, try it.
. Prices have long dropped to European levels, the roads are excellent, and the distances allow you not to get tired while driving. There are many car rental resources. I settled on a site that specializes in local local rental offices and has proven itself well - Myrentacar.com. I recommend it - there is only a 15% prepayment and there are no crazy deposits.

In most cases, an ordinary passenger car is sufficient; where an SUV is needed, you can always use the services of local residents - it’s inexpensive, from 10 to 50 dollars, depending on the time and distance.

Batumi Piazza

Address: Tsar Parnavaz street 25
How to get there:

  • from any stop on bus No. 7 to the stop “st. King Parnavaz"
  • from one of the stops on Gogebashvili Street by bus No. 1, 1-a, 2, 4, 10, 13 to the intersection with Tsar Parnavaz Street

Piazza Square is a must-see attraction in Batumi. It is located next to the city hall in the northern part of the city.

The piazza is a real piece of Italy in Georgia, it strongly resembles the Venetian San Marco Square. The buildings surrounding the square are decorated with architectural lighting, colorful stained glass windows, artistic paintings and mosaics. The Piazza has many cute restaurants serving dishes from different cuisines from around the world.

The square can safely be called the concentration of the cultural life of Batumi. It is on the Piazza that various official receptions and other events are held. Therefore, if you find yourself in Georgia for some kind of holiday, be sure to take a walk to the Piazza, for sure something interesting will happen there.

Old city

The old city, also known as historical Batumi, is the embodiment of the history of Georgia. Here, every building and path reminds of ancient times, when Aristotle, Pliny and other ancient heroes remembered Batumi.

Advice! If you are going to stay in Batumi, it is best to rent accommodation in the Old Town.

The old town can be divided in half by Baratashvili Street. Tourists who come to Batumi for the first time will find it interesting to walk from this street to the seaport. In fact, the port itself was moved to another location long ago, so it is now a quiet and secluded waterfront. From there there is a beautiful view of the mountains, which looks very impressive in the winter season.

There are many churches in the old town. During your walk you will see:

  • Greek Church;
  • Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
  • Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas;
  • Jewish synagogue;
  • Muslim Mosque of Orta Jame;
  • Armenian temple of Surb Pkrch.

The Marine Station, which is one of the end points of the walking route, is also quite an interesting location. On its territory there is a monument in the form of the Soviet boat “Meteor”. Nowadays, quite a few such copies have survived.

Batumi port

Large liners have not been parked in the old seaport for a long time, since the cargo and passenger port was moved to another location.

The port offers beautiful views of the mountains. Moreover, it is equally impressive in both summer and winter. So if you find yourself in Batumi, be sure to grab a mug of delicious drink and take a walk around the old seaport.

Those who want to experience a romantic atmosphere should definitely visit the port at sunset.

Fountain "Neptune"

Address: Theater Square, also known as Poseidon Square (next to the Batumi Drama Theater named after Ilya Chavchavadze)

The Neptune Fountain is one of the most beautiful fountains in Georgia. You can take very beautiful photos against the backdrop of it and the dramatic theater itself.

To me, the Neptune fountain strongly resembles the style of Roman fountains. The 4 sculptures surrounding the fountain are very realistic.

Rustaveli Avenue

Shota Rustaveli Avenue is one of the central streets of the city. There are no famous architectural monuments or other attractions in this location, but every tourist should take a walk along this street.

To many, Rustaveli Avenue resembles New Orleans and Mexico.

Along the avenue there are many beautiful colorful houses, the sight of which immediately improves your mood. By the way, these houses are often used by local photographers as decorations.

Batumi Museum of Religion

Price: for free
Telephone: +995-93-978283

The Museum of Religion has been operating since 2004; most of the exhibits were collected by the Komakhidze family. In total, the museum houses about 500 different installations.

This museum will be visited by people of different faiths and ages. The Museum of Religion displays items belonging to Judaism, Islam, Catholicism, Gregorianism and Orthodoxy. Here you can see ancient books, photographs, sculptures, bas-reliefs, icons and frescoes.

Sculpture "Ali and Nino"

Address: Seaside Park
How to get there: from the Gogebashvili stop by buses No. 1, 1a, 2, 4, 10, 13

If you ask a local what sights of Batumi you should see first, the sculpture of love “Ali and Nino” will definitely be on this list. Ali and Nino are popular characters from the famous novel.

The story of Ali (Ali khan Shirvanshir) and Nino (Nino Kipiani) is very romantic and sad. He is an Azerbaijani, a descendant of aristocrats. She is the daughter of a Georgian prince. They were in love with each other, but their parents were against their wedding. They married against their will, but soon the lovers were separated by the revolution and the First World War. After these events, Ali died and Nino went missing.

Sculpture "Ali and Nino" - this is not just an ordinary monument, it moves and tells its own mini-story. At first, the lovers move towards each other and gradually merge into a single whole. After a while, the sculptures disperse.

Alphabet Tower

Address: Primorsky Boulevard
How to get there:

  • from the stop on Gogebashvili street by bus No. 1, 1-a, 2, 4, 10, 13 and then walk to the embankment
  • from the stop on Shota Rustaveli Street by bus No. 1, 7, 10, 11, 12, 15.

The Alphabet Tower is one of the symbols of Batumi. It is a kind of monument to the Georgian alphabet, because the entire metal frame of the tower is surrounded by ribbons decorated with letters. If you visit the tower during the day, you should definitely take the glass elevator to the observation deck. In good weather, you can see the whole of Batumi from it.

Note! There is a fee for taking the elevator to the observation deck. Moreover, if you booked a table at a restaurant in the tower, you do not need to pay extra

In addition to the observation deck, observatory and television studio, the tower houses a Thai restaurant. It is located in the dome of the tower. It is best to book a table for the evening, as at this time the lights turn on and the restaurant rotates. During dinner, you get the feeling that you are on a horizontal Ferris wheel.

Interestingly, according to official data, almost $34 million was allocated for the construction of the Alphabet Tower. Many locals believe that the main purpose of the tower's construction was money laundering.

Chacha fountain

Address: Marine Station
Working hours: around the clock, but chacha flows once a week (any day) at 19:00 for 10 minutes

Probably every alcohol lover has at least thought about the possibility that there would be a fountain in the world from which alcohol would flow like a river. So such a fountain exists, it is located in Batumi!

The chacha fountain looks like a 25-meter tower with an observation deck and a large clock. Around the building there are 4 large and 4 small pools, which are connected to each other by channels. Once a week the pools are filled with chacha. Externally, the chacha fountain looks like a copy of a structure that stood in Batumi more than 100 years ago.

Chacha is a homemade vodka of 45-50 degrees strength, made from grapes.

Every week tourists and locals are invited to taste a new chacha. In this way, drink producers introduce people to a new product.

Seaside Park - Great quiet place for an evening stroll. It can be called a direct embodiment of the resort Batumi. There are several fountains and many interesting sculptures here. There are table tennis and chess tables in the park. Anyone can pleasantly while away their leisure time here.

By the way! Local residents of different ages often relax in the seaside park. It is quite possible that Georgians will be the first to come up to you to get acquainted.

New Batumi

New Batumi is a more modernized area of the city. What to see in this part of Batumi? There are several interesting locations here:

  4. Lake Aragani. There is a location on this lake where there is a house and a bridge in an oriental style. You can take some cool photos at this place.
  5. Avenue of Heroes. Located behind Justice's house, located just beyond the lake. It is pleasant to walk along this alley at any time of the day. In terms of architecture and atmosphere in general, it is very reminiscent of the situation in the UAE.
  6. The junction of Old and New Batumi. This is, one might say, a deserted place. But there is a very clean and beautiful beach, from which you can see many buildings located in Old Batumi.

If you have free time, you can walk from Old Batumi to New Batumi on foot. Many tourists prefer cycling between these two points. If you have small children, but really want to visit New Batumi, you can take a taxi.

Europe Square

Address: Batumi center

Europe Square was named so in honor of Adjara's accession to the Assembly of European Regions. Because of the atmosphere and appearance of this place, you really get the impression that you are in some European city. Europe Square is a clean and well-groomed place where a Christmas tree is installed in winter, fountains are turned on in summer and concerts are held.

Cozy streets branch off from the square, where souvenir shops and cafes are located. It's nice to run into one of the local establishments in the evening and drink coffee.

The interior attraction of the Square of Europe is the statue of Midea. The goddess of justice is a symbol of wealth and prosperity in Georgia. Because of the statue, the square is often informally called the Argonaut Square.

Botanical Garden

Church of the Holy Trinity on Mount Sameba

Address: Mount Sameba
How to get there: only by taxi (the trip will cost about 30 lari for the round trip) or by your own car

Mount Sameba and the Trinity Church are located next to the upper cable car station. The temple was built in the 90s of the last century and has been perfectly preserved to this day.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a very beautiful and peaceful place. The exterior and interior of the temple are made in a fairly minimalist style, with colorful stained glass windows and bas-reliefs decorating its perimeter. The church occupies a large area, it is surrounded by small observation platforms and cozy courtyards.

Mount Sameba itself is an excellent vantage point from which you can see the whole of Batumi and its surroundings. The approximate height of the mountain is 400 meters (it is located higher than the upper cable car station, so the view from it is better). Many people drive up the mountain to take beautiful pictures. If you also have this goal, it is better to plan your trip in the morning.

Park of Miracles

Address: New Batumi Boulevard

In fact, the Park of Miracles bears little resemblance to the parks we are used to. This is a minimalist recreation area with a small Ferris wheel, a statue of “Me, You and Batumi”, interesting stone chairs and a lighthouse, and several interesting sculptures.

This is a good option for an evening walk on your own or in a group. Despite the fact that Miracle Park is not particularly rich in entertainment, there are always a lot of people walking around here (especially in the evening).

Dolphinarium Batumi

In 2006, with the help of local philanthropists, it was restored and already in 2009, the doors of the dolphinarium were again opened for young and adult visitors. Inside, the dolphinarium looks like an ancient amphitheater in the jungle. A glass dome is used instead of a roof. There are many artists performing at the Batumi Dolphinarium: about 15 dolphins and 5 seals. There are always a lot of locals and tourists attending the performances, so tickets for them should be purchased in advance.

In addition to the show, at the dolphinarium you can visit dolphin therapy, which includes not only swimming with dolphins in the pool. What to see in Batumi in 1 or 2 days. Routes on the map, coordinates, photos. Main attractions and non-tourist places.

Where to live in Batumi?

Batumi is an ancient city with a centuries-old history (it was mentioned by Aristotle and Pliny) and in the Old City history is literally in every brick and in every stone of the cobblestone streets. In order to fully experience the unique atmosphere of Batumi, and in addition, have a good rest on the beach, which literally “encircles” the historical part of the city, I would recommend renting an apartment or apartments in Batumi for daily rent - fortunately there is no shortage of them here - and at least for a short time feel like a local resident.

I can confidently recommend these amazing apartments in the very “heart” of old Batumi (Gorgasali Street), where we lived for two weeks in September 2018, and also apartment in one of the most beautiful mansions in the city, where I stayed for a few days in December of that year.

If you are planning your independent trip to Georgia or just a seaside holiday in Batumi, be sure to check out my selections and - here is only the most valuable information from my personal experience of numerous trips to Batumi over several years. In addition, in the article about apartments you will find a detailed story about how Old and New Batumi differ in terms of living, as well as what nuances you need to pay special attention to when searching for and renting an apartment “on the spot”.

What to see in Batumi in 1 day

For the convenience of readers, the article contains scalable maps of walking around Batumi - the numbers of attractions on the map correspond to their numbers in the table of contents and in the article itself. If you are interested in a specific place in Batumi, you can click on the name and go straight to its description and coordinates.

I suggest starting your walk through the most interesting places in the Old Town of Batumi from a busy intersection Chavchavadze streets And Gogebashvili, where one of the city's most popular attractions is located: cable car "Argo". By the way, almost next to its lower station there is one of the most suitable places to get acquainted with Georgian and Adjarian (Laz) cuisines: cafe "Samikitno Machakhela".

1. Batumi “Argo” cable car

The lower station of the cable car is located near the Batumi port on Gogebashvili Street. In the old days, a memorial to those killed in the Great Patriotic War was located on this site, but under Saakashvili, in the wake of the “de-Sovietization” of Georgia, it was dismantled - although they promised to restore it in another place. The upper station of the cable car is located on Mount Anuria, from where wonderful views of Batumi, the Black Sea and the Adjarian mountains open.

The Batumi cable car is equipped with brand new cabins from the Austrian company Doppelmayr, well known to all skiers. There are only nine cabins, each accommodating up to eight passengers, the total length of the cable car is 2586 meters.

Coordinates of the lower station: N41.64754, E41.64548.

2. Turkish Quarter and Orta Jame Mosque

Orta Jame Mosque- a material symbol of why, in fact, Adjara at one time received autonomy within Georgia. In general, ethnically Adjarians are the same Georgians who, under the influence of the Turks, converted to Islam. That is why Mikheil Saakashvili managed to return Adjara “to Georgia” relatively easily - because there was no harsh ethnic confrontation, as in the case of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The best way to get to the mosque is Kutaisi street from the center of the Old Town of Batumi. In this case, the minaret sticking into the sky will be visible at the very end of the street, and the city itself will look very similar to something Turkish or Arab.

Coordinates of the Horta Jame Mosque: N41.64871, E41.64383.

This part of Batumi is given a special flavor by the huge number of Turkish eateries with doners, lahmajuns, kokoreci and God knows what else. In general, Kutaisi Street is one of the most picturesque places in the city.

3. Piazza

Piazza- such an artsy “Italian” place, the result of the restoration of the city that took place during the time of Saakashvili.

Very similar to the “Italian” crafts in Las Vegas and Chinese Macau. That is, from afar it looks like it, but up close it’s a dummy. However, neither this nor the somewhat clumsy name (piazza in Italian means “square”) did not prevent Piazza from becoming one of the main tourist attractions of the Old Town of Batumi.

Coordinates: N41.6495, E41.64112.

4. Church of St. Nicholas

Church of St. Nicholas is very similar to Orthodox churches somewhere in Greece or Cyprus, which is not surprising - it was built 150 years ago by the Pontic Greeks.

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Batumi; services are conducted in two languages: Georgian and Russian.

Coordinates of the Church of St. Nicholas: N41.65026, E41.64137.

5. Armenian Church of Christ the Savior

Two communities - Armenian and Jewish - were registered in Batumi in the 1880s, but the Armenians managed to build their church before the synagogue.

In Soviet times, the church had a planetarium; after Georgia gained independence, it was closed and the church’s original functions were returned. Located at the intersection of streets Noah Jordania And Gamsakhurdia, coordinates N41.6497, E41.63911.

6. Batumi Circus

If you come on holiday to Batumi with children, this establishment will definitely help you entertain them. Performances usually start at 20:00, and in the summer there are mainly touring companies performing.

The ticket costs 10 lari. Address: st. Baratashvili, 23. Coordinates N41.64983, E41.63715.

7. Europe Square and Medea statue

At the edge of Europe Square stands a house with a “fairy-tale” tower and an astronomical clock:

Previously, the National Bank was located in it, but now the tower is empty, and the first floor is occupied by the Batumi Children's World. The clock on the tower, in addition to the time, also shows the sides of the horizon, phases of the moon, zodiac signs and much more.

Opposite the tower, on the corner of Konstantin Gamsakhurdia Street, there is a red-brown brick building (“Palace of Labor”) - before the “Rose Revolution” and the reintegration of Adjara back into Georgia, the residence of the local “appanage princeling” was located here. Aslana Abashidze, at that time the ruler of virtually independent Adjara. After his overthrow, interestingly, Abashidze fled to Russia, and not to Turkey, which was mentally and religiously close to Adjara.

Next door to Abashidze's former residence is House of the Government of the Republic of Adjara(a little closer to Teatralnaya Square), and opposite - constitutional Court.

Medea statue

Actually, it’s a paradox: in the center of Europe Square there is a statue of the heroine of the myth of the Argonauts, Medea, holding the Golden Fleece in her hands. The same fleece that was skillfully “wrung out” by a gang of thieves from the very Europe after which the square is named.

Apparently, the sheep skin stolen by the Greeks from the Georgians is an allegorical symbol of the result of Georgia’s integration into the European Union.

Medea statue coordinates: N41.65122, E41.63643.

Excursions in Batumi and Adjara from local residents

For curious and sociable travelers who want to get to know Batumi and its residents even better, I recommend booking a first-person city tour. Your guides will be local residents - journalists, photographers, historians and simply experts in their native places. Below is a selection of the most interesting and popular excursions in Tbilisi according to traveler reviews. To see all available options, click View All. At the booking stage, you will need to pay online only 20% of the excursion cost - the rest of the amount is given to the guide before it starts.

8. Memed Abashidze Street and Apollo Cinema

The street is named after the Georgian politician and public figure Memed Abashidze, repressed and executed in 1937.

Opposite the cinema, old photographs are placed on special stands, in which you can see what Abashidze Street looked like before the revolution.

If you are wondering what to do in Batumi in the evening: there are many casinos in the city, but if you are not a gambler, you can just go to the cinema. Sessions at Apollo are held in both Georgian and Russian - for example, in December 2018 there were two sessions in Georgian and three in Russian.

Apollo opening hours: first show at 12:00, last at 22:00. Ticket prices: 8,9 and 10 GEL. Address: st. M. Abashidze, 17. Coordinates N41.65153, E41.63836. Information - www.kinoafisha.ge.

9. Era Square (Theater Square)

On the eastern side of the square there is Theater named after Chavchavadze, because of him the square began to be called Theater.

There is a gilded copy in the center of the square Neptune statues from Italian Bologna. Before Neptune, there was a monument to Chavchavadze in this place, but now it has been moved behind the theater building.

Neptune statue coordinates: N41.65258, E41.63765.

10. Batumi Marine Station

An imposing building in the classic “Soviet-resort” style, its silhouette evokes memories of similar buildings in Crimea and Sochi.

Batumi sea terminal coordinates: N41.65213, E41.64373.

11. Chacha Tower

Clock tower in the Ottoman style, it was built according to the design of the French architect Raymond Charles Père - in appearance it resembles a small mosque with a clock and a yellow dome.

Chacha Tower

The most intriguing thing about it is that it is essentially a fountain: once a week, in accordance with a strictly secret schedule, chacha (strong Georgian grape vodka) flows from four pillars on the sides of the tower for 15 minutes - absolutely free. Some tourists and local residents try to calculate the time of the “chacha eruption”, but, as a rule, without success.

Chacha Tower coordinates: N41.6528, E41.64267.

12. Batumi seaport

Currently, only a harbor for boats and yachts remains on the site of the old seaport, and the coastal area has become part of the tourist walking area of Batumi. The cargo and passenger port was moved north - to the area of the Batumi oil refinery and the new railway station.

Seaport coordinates: N41.6537, E41.64308.

13. Park of Wonders

Actually, this is not even one attraction of the old city of Batumi, but several: batumi lighthouse, Ferris wheel, Alphabet Tower(or Alphabet Tower), moving sculptural composition “Ali and Nino”.

Stone chairs in the Park of Miracles

Coordinates of the lighthouse in Wonderland Park: N41.65594, E41.6411.

14. Tower with a mini Ferris wheel

This building has nautical motifs: the Ferris wheel at the very top is the steering wheel, above it is a stylized sail, and the high spire is the mast. Apparently, the architect took inspiration from the myth of Jason and his ship Argo.

Tradition and modernity :-)

In Batumi, many modern attractions are in one way or another connected with this ancient Greek myth: for example, the statue of Medea on Europe Square, or the Batumi cable car, which is called “Argo”. Initially, the building with a mini-ferris wheel was built for the University of Technology, then they decided to place a business center in it, and now they have stopped work altogether - and the construction appears to have already been completed.

Tower coordinates: N41.65414, E41.63674.

15. Primorsky Boulevard Batumi

From the Park of Wonders it extends several kilometers to the southwest Primorsky Boulevard is perhaps the main attraction of Batumi, containing a good dozen smaller attractions. This is not an avenue or a street in the traditional sense, but rather a landscaped area of land between the beach and residential areas.

16. Batumi Beach

The beach in Batumi is truly gigantic - it stretches from the lighthouse and the statue of Ali and Nino to the southwest and borders almost the entire city.

The most “swimming” places are located opposite and, the cleanest water is not far from the San Remo cafe at the junction of the Old and.

17. Rustaveli Avenue

The avenue runs parallel to the sea and the Batumi pedestrian Boulevard and is lined with respectable buildings with respectable cafes and restaurants on the ground floors. By the way, you can read more about where to eat in Batumi in my.

Rustaveli Avenue is notable for its palm trees - they were once given to the city of Batumi by the Arab Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak and they were planted on both sides of the roadway.

18. Church of St. Barbara

It was erected in 1888 with the support of Emperor Alexander III on the territory of a military hospital. During Soviet times, the church was used as a warehouse - in the 90s, the hospital building was demolished, and the temple was transferred to the Georgian Orthodox Church, and since then services have been conducted in the Georgian language. In 2015, another Georgian-style church was erected nearby - New Varvarinskaya.

Coordinates of the Church of St. Barbara: N41.65093, E41.63149.

19. Park 6 May, dolphinarium and zoo

Park 6 May is located southwest of the Seaside Park, behind Melikishvili Street - there is a colonnade-entrance on it.

Park entrance coordinates: N41.64838, E41.62973.

20. Adjara Museum

Museum of Adjara (Batumi Museum of Local Lore), st. Dzhincharadze, 4, coordinates N41.64728, E41.63324. The entrance ticket costs 3 GEL.

21. Museum of Art

Address Z. Gorgiladze, 8, coordinates N41.64857, E41.63395. The entrance ticket costs 2 GEL. Opening hours of the Museum of Art: Tue-Sun 11:00-18:00, closed Monday.

If you don’t want to go to the museum, you can just relax on the square with a pleasant park opposite, at the intersection of Asatiani and Gorgiladze streets.

22. Batumi Municipality

The building faces this square Municipality of Batumi— in Georgia, at the instigation of Saakashvili, these institutions began to be called City Hall.

Coordinates: N41.64835, E41.63517.

23. Batumi Synagogue

The synagogue was built in 1904 by the architect S. Volkovich, who took the Amsterdam and The Hague synagogues as a basis. In 1923 it was converted into a sports club - only in 1992 the synagogue was returned to the Jewish community of Batumi.

Address: st. Vazha Pshavela, between Gorgiladze and Tsar Parnavaz streets. Coordinates N41.64735, E41.63449.

24. Old railway station

At the beginning of this century, the “city fathers” decided that a station in the very center of Batumi was not needed, and they built a new one in the north-eastern part of the city, and a branch of the Tbilisi Bank was located in the old building:

Coordinates N41.64506, E41.63614.

25. Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The main Catholic church of Batumi was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1903 at the expense of the Zubalashvili brothers.

During the Soviet years, the church housed a laboratory for the study of high-voltage electricity, whose experiments gradually destroyed the building. Many representatives of the Georgian intelligentsia were in favor of stopping the research (among them, for example, was Konstantin Gamsakhurdia, the father of the first president of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia).

1. New Batumi

I propose starting the second day in Batumi with a tour of the so-called “New Batumi” - a part of the city that conventionally starts from Cafe "San Remo"(address Rustaveli, 34 - approximately in this place Rustaveli Avenue turns into Sherif Khimshiashvili street) and extends south approximately to the sculpture Where, against the backdrop of which everyone who gets to this part of Batumi must take pictures.

It is about this part of the city that we can rightfully say “Batumi is a city of contrasts.” Here, ultra-modern skyscrapers coexist with 9-story Soviet panel buildings, and the creations of the world's most fashionable architects intersperse with vacant lots.

View of New Batumi from the Tower restaurant tower

2. Catholic Basilica of the Holy Spirit

Located between the city center and the seaport (Gogebashvili St., 54). It was built in the late 90s and is visually very reminiscent of the modernist temples of South America, the work of Oscar Nemeyer and his followers (there are especially many of them in Brazil).

Straight lines, spacious and bright interior space - light enters through giant stained glass windows. Located at the northern entrance to the city (from Makhinjauri). Coordinates N41.64569, E41.64996.
